Well, I'm pretty handy.
Plumbing is my big Achilles heal, but I can handle most household carpentry, electrical, landscaping, roofing tasks.
I guess my real beef with these pricks is why do they feel justified in raping the home when they are, at least to some extent, at fault for the foreclosure.
I feel like I would be extremely resentful paying a shitload of money and then having to "clean up" some after some asshole's mischief.
I saw one I really REALLY liked yesterday, billed as needing a little TLC, and when I looked through the back yard window into a bedroom, the place look practically demolished. I was pissed. And it certainly wasn't even below market value for a turnkey home of the same specs.
I think I might feel like, even if the savings of a fixer upper afforded me the extra dough to re-model, when it's all said and done I'm still on the short end because I had to invest so much labor.
I guess would have expected these handyman's specials to have been priced WELL below market value.

Give it time. My guess is banks hold them. It costs them a fortune to hold onto them. The maintenance and finance carry is not worth any extra price. They will look to dump.

Yeah, I gotta believe your are right on with that.
These banks gotta get SOMETHING for these homes.
I'm not necessarily looking specifically for a dump just to save money....I'm perfectly willing to bid on a turnkey home, but I just thought maybe in this market I might get more house for my buck if it required some work, which most foreclosures do.

"I think I might feel like, even if the savings of a fixer upper afforded me the extra dough to re-model, when it's all said and done I'm still on the short end because I had to invest so much labor."
Exactly but that's the problem with a lot of these "needs TLC" places.....watch that show on "flipping" houses that's on TV - it tells you a lot of stuff that can happen with some of these things.....don't discount all fixer uppers - some can really work out well - as one of the places we bought did - just needed cosmetics.....good luck with the search....

The problem with foreclosures nowadays as opposed to a few years back is that 95% of the foreclosures have mortgages that are worth more than the house itself. Unlike a few years back when most of the houses still had some equity in them and the bank was willing to take a little loss. There are no real deals now and the housing market is still coming down. Banks are listing them near fair value. So unless you find a diamond in the rough or are willing to put alot of money into a good property. Its best to but a place that needs some work and stay away from the foreclosure BS.

Looked a nice place (ok condition) in H.B. today that needed some work, very cosmetic, but had three pending offers, one of them damn near 40K over the asking price.
Fuck all that noise.

I'm pissed. This is the first time I have been on here all week, because this board is now blocked by the internet Nazis at work :<
With a whole 6 days left, I have hope that my access will not be NEARLY as restricted in my new gig...

I had a nightmare doomsday scenario a few days ago, just before I logged off for the day at work. There has been a known internet attack by the IT army, and social sites like Facebook have been slashed (never went on from work anyway, cept for visits here and there from my phone), YouTube (I love YouTube but never go from work) - and sites like that.
Well, I go to poke a few days ago and every site I am visiting is blocked, "restricted." From this board to my homepage of FoxNews. I logged off thinking they banned external sites completely. Did not say anything, till I could confirm. Came in the next morning, and all was well.
Can you imagine if I cant get on this board during the day?

It SUCKS. And strangely enough, the other board is not blocked, nor is Facebook... just cannot get on the Facebook inbox. At my job, ALL outside email (google, yahoo, hotmail, verizon, optonline, aol, etc.) is blocked, any site that streams audio or video is blocked (YouTube, internet radio, etc.), all downloads are blocked, all "social networking" sites like MySpace & eVite (but oddly not Facebook), and anything fantasy sports related EXCEPT CBS Sports, for some unknown reason...
I'm not looking to fritter away the day, but I'd like to be able to check my hotmail once a day or if I am expecting to hear from someone & I'd like to be able to get on the Yahoo fantasy site, especially if it is slow and I'm just twiddling my thumbs, as occasionally happens... fingers crossed for the new job!!!

At work, I can get onto Facebook but not the inbox. Similar thing with LinkedIn. Personal e-mail and sports-related sites are banned as well.
At an old job of mine, I couldn't access Essex County, NJ I guess for the simple reason of s-e-x being in the domain name.

OK, are you seriously kidding me??? newsday.2.homefinder.com/SCS/listing_details.jsp?affiliate_name=newsday&calling_page=listing_result_list&listing_result_page=listing_result_list&filter_max_price=40000&tab_num=1&display_default_state_id=60619&community_sort_id=1241462540730&geo_area_id=71979&filter_property_type=single_family_home&filter_product_id=46705274"This one won't last!" YEAH, people are clamoring in this market to burn 2 grand on a broker fee and waste 2 grand a month on a TWO BEDROOM, ONE bath APARTMENT in someone's private house, in buttfuck West Islip. Shit like this infuriates me, because it drives the market way out of wack. There is absolutely NO excuse for basic 2br apartment in someone's house, in a middle of the road Suffolk County suburb, to be listed over $1600. It ain't an apartment in the pool house or the carriage house in East Hampton, it's West fucking Islip. I don't give a crap if you are one of those retards who bought into the adjustable rate mortage and your $1800/mo payment just went up to $2600/mo... if you are so stupid that you put nothing down on your house and you now owe more on your mortgage than the house is worth, SO FUCKING SAD FOR YOU, I don't care. For $2000/month, you can get A WHOLE HOUSE, or an apartment in a complex with a gym, pool, marina & other ammenities. Won't last, my ass. I hope this douchelick doesn't lower his price, can't find a tenant and gets his house foreclosed on, for being arrogant enough to list this shit. ((No, I'm not frustrated at all by the current housing/rental market.))

Whoa, hey now. Knocking Beautiful West Islip, home of The Groarks....That's probably a house south of Montauk. WI also has one of the best school districts on LI, and probably the best in Suffolk County

I'm not knocking West Islip at all... but I am knocking this rental. This place is NOT south of Montauk, it's off Higbie Lane, a block off of Union Blvd. They have NO justification for listing an apartment for that kind of money in that area. There are 3 houses listed closer to Deer Park Avenue (which looks like a nicer neighborhood, to me) that are whole 3BR houses with 2+ baths, for $200 more...
I think the 3br/2ba house listed at $2700 is a little high, too, but it is clearly 4 times the rental of the little 2br apartment for $2000... the 5br/5ba estate with 100 ft of beach on the bay for $13,000/mo just makes me shake my head and wonder who could possibly afford that... and why the hell are they wasting their money renting...
Do a search on the real estate section of Newsday.com for house rentals...
...And just a question, not knocking the schools anywhere, but how can West Islip have one of the best districts... if Commack, Half Hollow Hills & Babylon Village are supposed to be the best schools on Long Island... and if that is the case, how do places like Rockville Centre & Oyster Bay justify their taxes (are those people doing so well that they just pony up & send the kids to private school?)

those are all good school districts as well. Newsday should have their school district report cards out soon, WI is usually 95% in everything, and their sports programs are also top notch. From what I hear, if you're good enough to make the lacrosse team, you can count on a scholarship. The football team is consistently in the championship game. Not that I'm bragging though, I didn't grow up here, I grew up in Deer Park. The only time DP makes gets mentioned in the high school sports pages is when they play a good team, and lose 73-0

Higbie/Union is more of a commercial area, with 7-11, a florist, a legendary bar that is rumored to be closing and turned into a steak house. But yeah, that's either a typo, or an ad that was placed in 2007 and ran for a few years

The house looks to be in that tiny residential section across the street from 7-11 & a block in... I used to cut through there some mornings on my way to work, when I didn't feel like waiting for the light to make the right on Union. I'm also a big fan of the Delta station at the intersection... he keeps his prices low & pumps my gas for me.

Why is it that when people call you as a result of a wrong number....as if they want you to PROVE it's a wrong number.
Call I just took:
ME: "This is Chris" CALLER: "Is this Jason?" (I just fucking said This is Chris) ME: "No. Wrong number." CALLER: "Wrong number? I'm looking for Jason" ME: "Wrong Number!!!" CALLER: "OK, sorry"

I get the same shit 3 times a week. I pick up and someone asks for so and so, and I tell them wrong number. No matter how many times they call, I tell them I never heard of the guy, and they don't buy it because they need to mail some important paper work to him and my number was put down. So I calmly explain that he lied and put my number and did a hell of a guessing a job because I never met the guy and have no association with the assholes constantly calling me. But, they don't believe me and every call ends in me calling them a dumb cock sucker, to leave me the fuck alone because I've been more than helpful over a dozen times and I keep getting harassed because they think I'm lying. Instead of calling a spade a spade and just admitting they got fooled, they think by calling me numerous times a week eventually it'll change.
If I remember correctly, they always ask for a Jason too. Jason sucks putting my number down, that fucking douche.

I like when someone calls my number, they have it wrong, but by only a digit. For example, Ill say wrong number, and they say, "hmmm....isnt this 917-495-0402?
So instead of telling them they fudged one digit, I reply, "nooooooo....no way! This is 917-482-3851!"
They always end up saying something like, "whoa, dont know what the Hell I did wrong...wow! Ok, sorry."

I will not pump my own gas, if I can help it! Why not go to a full service gas station that charges less? It reminds me of home! I will always be a jersey girl.

Laura- If you are interested in school performance, check out greatschools.com. It gives you test scores and lets you compare vs. other schools. It doesn't rank them per se, but it gives you a good sense of the performance and the student body makeup. When we moved a few years ago, our realtor suggested it and it proved helpful as good public schools was a big driver in our decision to move from Brooklyn to the burbs.

I remember my first ever drive through new jersey. It was the middle of the night and I got yelled at by some dude for getting out and trying to pump my own gas.
I find full service lanes so obnoxious. If it didn't give so many people jobs, I'd say get ride of it. So lazy.

No excuse for not pumping ones own gas this day and age. Full service is disgusting.
Anyhow, Im grumpy, cause I did not get my A-Rod book or Sirenia CD today, as scheduled. With the preorder, should have arrived today, and that was indeed the ETA via Amazon. There was an arrival scan last night at the local post office, but they flubbed, and no package. This must be heavily monitored, and it better be here tomorrow.

What has me aggravated today is a Facebook friend who shot out a status update yesterday, warning people to stay away from imported Mexican tequila and beers yesterday due to the swine flu. In fact, she pretty much called anyone imbibing in such yesterday an idiot. Its people like this that throw the country into a tizzy, have the schools closed for no reason, and do the other stupid things that have me grumpy 75% of the time outside of the home.
In more stupid Swine Flu news, even thought the Health Council folks told schools they are wasting time by closing, Deer Park's geniuses of a board voted unanimously last night to keep everyone out of school until next Monday. Way to go!
