I think this deserves its own thread.
Despite prior defenses of Melky, I really don't care WHO wins the job. I still think that the 4th outfielder tag on Melky is ridiculous, but if Gardner outplays him, then bring it on. They both play hard defensively, and will have difficulty hitting. Melky has a better arm and switch hits, but Gardner has a speed advantage, and seems to have more heart.
Both will run through walls to catch a ball.
Melky is having a solid spring. Gardner is having a phenomenal one.
Should be interesting, though I think the brass above Girardi wants Gardner.
Thing is, Melky is out of options, so they may be stuck keeping him on the roster.

I want Gardner to take the job. I want Melky off the team. He is nothing but a fourth outfielder. In fact, I would bet you that once the Yankees DO cut him loose - and they will - he will go off into the Bubba Crosby realm of wandering the baseball Earth.
Melky is not worth keeping on the roster. Cut bait.
From everything i am reading, Gardner is going to get the job.

I dont care what is going on this spring, Melky Cabrera is a waste.

I'd like Melky to be OFF the team as well.
Two things would be accomplished:
a) the obvious - Melky is gone because he sucks b) we can stop this inappropriate focus on Melky vs Gardner, and focus all of our attention on Gardner. It won't take too long to see that he also sucks and should be off the team. Maybe this is the path to a new long-term center fielder.

Melky looked in midseason form yesterday misplaying a ball in CF. He sucks.

If Jeter were a standup guy, he would be out there and we wouldn't have this debate. Only add to his legacy as doing what's best for the team and adding him to Yankee legacy.

Gardner. Hands down. He has totally outplayed Melky all spring.

Why is Jeter being able to play CF decently being treated like a foregone conclusion.

Digging Gardner?
I'm not so sure digging is the appropriate word.
More like.......tolerating?

As much as I want Jeter off short, I am not so sure what we can do with him. His range sucks there - possibly the worst of any regular at the position in baseball - can you imagine how bad his range would be in center??
Jeter and A-Rod should trade places, at the very least.

Oh my God, Mr. Gloom And Doom.
We have a sure-lock Hall Of Famer playing shortstop. Woe is me...what are we going to do???
Chalk that up under the category of QUALITY PROBLEMS!
With the center-field, aging outfield, and bullpen issues we're looking at, I'm guessing that Mr. Jeter's tenure at short is about 2398302948239843290842398423 on the priority list.

Basically, what this comes down to is if Gardner hits .240, he'll still steal around 40 bases. If Melky's average is that high, he'll steal around nine. Go with Gardner.

Also, I think Gardner will actually run TOWARD balls hit to center-field.

Jeter's numbers would be brutal as a 3B. Just sayin.

What exactly would be the difference, if you are using ARods #s at SS? Both guys would still be in the lineup, and simply changing places in the field.
Same exact batting production, and better defense at SS. And less range for Derek the statue to cover.

But it's not like ARod hasn't bulked up (naturally of course since he was a Yankee) since 2004.
I would think his range wouldn't be that great either at this point.

Im sure it would not be "the worst in the league." So anything would be an improvement from what we have.

"Worst in the league" characterizations of Jeter are HIGHLY subjective and everything you've posted...ahem...."proving" that Jeter is such a horrible shortstop have been intricate and overly scrutinized sabermetrics.
You seem to dismiss his lack of errors as just not getting to balls. For this to be true, Derek Jeter would almost have to purposely back off of balls hit in a cognoscente attempt to reduce his error totals. That's NOT how Derek Jeter plays. If he were truly a bad short stop, some of those balls he barely gets to or easily gets to would be mishandled. Having less range that some other shortstops does not make you the WORST shortstop in the league. There are other shortstops in baseball who commit more errors than Jeter, who I would not rather have at short than Derek. And when you factor in the bat, I wouldn't rather have anyone at SS.

I really think Pay-Wad, with his new, um, physique, would have a lot of trouble playing SS right now.

Considering he has been spotted at the Yankee facilities, where he has been using the pool and the weight rooms, no.

Just read on MLB.COM that the Yankees are avidly shopping Melky, as they have prety much conceded Gardner has the job, and they are interested in opening up more at-bats for Swisher. I am for both giving Gardner the job for now, and getting Swisher more a role. And you know I want Melky gone. How stupid must the White Sox feel, the Yankees apparently called them realizing their CF situation was bad. When you are so bad that someone thinks Melky would be a help....wow.

Watch him go to some small market team and be thrown into a FOURTH OUTFIELDER role, where he always belonged!

The White Sox? Do they have any decent prospects? As long as the Yanks get someone to help the team, let them trade Melky.
