my last post in the new members thread got me thinking and i think this can be a cool thread once it gets moving
how did you meet______________________???
the blank can be anyone in the bleachers. the first person you met. the one you liked the least (or most). who brought you "in". hell, you can even tell of how you met the person who posted right before you. this should bring up some funny stories
I'll start. the first time i met Tom Brown was in 1997. I had seen him at games but never had the balls to go up and say hello. One night i was watching the news at 11. there was a story of tom's brother Dan, who had saved someone from a fire on long island. during the same newscast, there was a shot of a drunk tom doing the TOM dance during the yankees highlight reel. the next day i went to the game and introduced myself. i told him that i saw TWO of the brown brothers on the same newscast. if i remember the reaction, i'm pretty sure he was pissed that he missed it!
that was the first time i met the good sheriff, and the rest is history........

LOL!
I remember that. You have one fact skewed, it was Dave that did the save. But yeah, both of us on the news, the same night. Wasnt my Mom proud! One of us valiently saving a life, the other drunk and dancing on a bench. Vinny, I actually used that tale on the radio when I was doing my Mason in the morning bits, and had not been aware before you told me we both nailed the newscast.
I may not be good in this thread. Sadly, I met most of you when I was very intoxicated and dont remember the actual point of contact.

ah yes, dave...my bad!
first creature i ever met was Kwik. I was waiting on line for tickets (remember when we used to have to do that???) and he came up to me. i had recognized him from going to games (how could you miss that HAIR!?!?) and we said hello and he hopped in on line with me. kwik was the first person to bring me "in" and get me past the guards at the gate of 39 (tina/walkman john)

I've never met anyone.
I don't know who technically qualifies as a "bleacher creature" or not, but there's a possibility that I'll meet Jackass and his brother The BadLt later in September.
I believe last time I was in the bleachers, last year, I think I saw Balls, but never met.
I said "What's Up Vinny" to you, Vinny, in front of the Angels Stadium last season while you were standing there with the other Road Trippers with a scowl on your face - obviously the fact that the Yankees were in Anaheim, it can be easily deduced that they lost that day.
However, I was introduced to the "Bleacher Creatures" in 2002, during a day/night double-header against the Orioles the weekend of the first anniversary of 9/11 that I went back for. I flew into JFK at 7am, went right from the airport to the stadium, watched the game in the section 37, went across the street to the bowling alley and took a nap at a table, then went to the evening game where I watched from section 39. Then I took the Metro North to my Aunt's in Lake Carmel, slept a few hours, took a combination of trains back to JFK and went home the next day. My landing in the bleachers that day was entirely accidental, as I knew nothing of the creatures, but those were the cheapest tickets I found last minute online.

The first time I met Vinny, was actually the first time I met Rose. I was standing outside Jeremy's during the end of the Christmas party smoking with Gooner, and Rose came out and recognized me from Myspace of all places, lol. So her and I were talking and she introduced me to Vinny.

I think me and Jackass going back and forth was all in good fun...good raunchy fun...but good fun nonetheless....I don't remember who it was, but on the board the next day I had mentioned that I saw you, and someone replied - You should have told him you were the guy who gives Jackass shit on the board! But then again, Jackass gives his share as well. HAHAHA!
But anyway, I'm glad I found this place - I feel honored to exchange thoughts and talk shit with The Bleacher Creatures, both here and on section39.com.
I don't think I ever told you this story Vinny - during the Dodgers/Yankees series in 2004, I was wearing a Thurman Munson t-shirt. Some guy at the concession stand under the bleachers says out of the blue, "That's the best t-shirt I've seen all weekend." So he and I start chatting, he's wearing some t-shirt that made mention of the Bleacher Creatures…don’t remember which. So I told him I had the Section39 t-shirt I bought on the street to commemorate my visit during the aforementioned Orioles double-header. He says, "Oh you shoulda bought a 37 shirt." I asked, "Oh, where do you get that one." And kinda laughing he says, "From the SAME GUY WHO SOLD YOU THE 39 SHIRT!"

Dave actually has a bunch of plaques and awards from that day...
He was working and just happened to drive by an active house fire in Freeport, where there was a guy trapped upstairs. Cops were on the scene, but they had no way to get the guy down, and Dave stopped his truck, grabbed his ladder and rescued him!
Back on the topic... the first person I met in the bleachers/on the board was Tom, and oddly enough, after seeing him around the stadium for 2 seasons, it was outside of the Bronx that I first talked to him. He and Al were in line ahead of my group in line, waiting for Down the Hatch to open, that fateful October Saturday in 2000. We got to talking, and I ended up heading out to Kwik's place to watch the game that evening with Tom, Baloo, Laurie and Jasmine. We had to stop at the store to buy something that began with the letter "B," and I seem to remember that we brought vampire BLOOD, BACON, BEER and BALOO. I remember Tom spilling Twisted Tea all over Kwik's white rug and Jasmine flipping out, trying to hide it... Knoblauch posing for a photo op next to Chuck Knoblauch's picture on the TV... and prank calls to Tom's phone from someone in the kitchen, pretending to be a Seattle fan wanting to fight Tom... Good times!

I knew who a few people were -- Tom, Tina and Vinny specifically -- but didn't know them. Then I stopped sitting out in the bleachers due to a combo of the assigned seats, the beer ban and my tier box plan shooting up to well over 40 games.
I met Laura because she lived two doors down from me and came out to watch the Cowboys most Sundays with a group of fans in Hoboken -- as in, the Sundays when she could crawl out of bed by kickoff, which usually numbered about half.
Then I met a few other people through Laura, some at the Snowball Softball tournament, some after games.

You make it sound like we knew we were neighbors.... the key to this story is that we lived 2 doors down from each other for over a year, before we actually met... on the complete other side of town... and that we were more likely to run into each other on the 4 train, than in our own building...

And I did that within minutes of walking into the door...I wasted no time. I remember trying to use the "if you throw a party, you have to expect this sort of thing to happen" excuse on Kwik.

I met Vinny first. He cut in front of me on line getting a churro at the stadium. I pushed him, he pushed back and we had a knock down drag em out fight, which was broken up. After that, we were told to make friends and shake hands.....
Alright, it wasn't that exciting. I was a member of the old Yahoo board, and I heard this guy was selling shirts. I posted, and was told to see him in the bleachers. I bought 3 of the original shirts, and we've remained penpals ever since.......

I met TJ and Al on the same day, October 28, 1995, at Down the Hatch. I actually met Al first, when TJ had gone to the bathroom. I saw an open stool and jumped on it. I'll never forget the words that swept me off of my feet and defined my future, "If you know what's good for you, you'll get out of that chair." And the rest is history....
Although, Al and I had a close call, when I rented a ski cottage with a group of girlfriends up at Hunter Mountain the year before we met. Al and his friends were renting the main house on the same property, for the same four months. Yet, we never ran into each other. Weird.

The reason I met Tina was because I had found out she was Albanian through Grover, another Albanian. So Capone introduced us and Tina and I got to talking about being Albanian and what not.
She asked me what my last name was (it's a common Albanian question) and I told her. She was stunned. Tina says, that's my last name.
Those of you who know my last know it's that common at all and even less know how to say or spell it. I made her spell my name because I didn't believe her. Well, she got it. When I got home that night I asked my parents about her and it turns out that Tina and I are distant cousins.
I knew her family from Detriot as they were at my sister's and brother's wedding.

I believe AJFreakz' intro to the board is actually in the classics section. The first people I met in the bleachers were Dave and Junior. Tom shortly after. One of the best things about going to Yankee games is that if you truly are a Yankee fan, you have an ability to find similar people at the Stadium. Anybody in your age group or older will remember the same games, same incidents, same players.
For example, if I bring up a game in the early 1990s when Mel Hall hit a dramatic bottom of the 9th HR to beat Boston, I guarantee several people here will not only remember that game, but would be able to chime in that it happened on Memorial Day.
You can sit anywhere in the Stadium, and I have, and somehow you will find someone to talk baseball with the entire game.
The bleachers is a place where this phenomenon is intensified. So that's basically how I started meeting people. Just talking baseball. In my first season in the bleachers, I normally sat toward the aisle in GG, and so did Dave and Junior. And that's how I started learning about the bleachers etc.
That's how I started as a regular. But my first experience in the bleachers was actually in 1998, the second to last day of the season. Milton wasn't there because I remember that there wasn't a cowbell.
Tom was there, because I do remember the Todd drum. Yes, I thought they were saying Todd.

July 1998 Weekend series and the Friday my daughts and I sat next to some college prats who were trying desperatly to keep up with he insults and on the Sats our seat were in the next aisle, I guess the first creature I met was Don as he was sitting behind me. Then we got started talking to the rest of you and thank you Larry for the nickname which is still present as you see. And the chanting of 'GI Jane' and the pics after. I remember Kaplan being there. Other than that the old brain has forgotten in its old age. But I did meet a lot of yers.
God has it really been that long that I have known you twits???

Balls, I believe I have that game on tape. 1992? Ah, GI Jane. I met GI Jane in the beer lline in Toronto. The vendors made me wait in a long line only to tell me that I was cut off from more beer when I got to the front. They should have told me earlier as they saw, and certainly heard me, as I was carrying on and making a scene. Gi Jane and her cohort Big Woman than stepped in and got me some beer.
I have that correct, Jane?

I believe the next year the Yankees also had a memorable Memorial Day game. I think it was a big day for Tartabull. I think its Memorial Day 1992 I have on tape. It was reshown as an "MSG Instant Classic" back in the day, and I recorded it.

Justing by the boxscore, you're right. They played Milwaukee in a wild one. Started ok, with the Yanks scoring twice in the 1st and twice in the third. Kamieniecki pitched well enough, not giving up a run until the 6th, and leaving with a 4-3 lead. Then the Yankee bullpen went to work. In the 8th, the Brewers scored 4 runs. Monteleone gave up one, and then the Steves demonstrated HOWE FARR the ball could go as the Yankees limped off the field now down 7-4. Putrid. Lee Geuterman got the last out as the Yankees used 4 pitchers in that inning.
But then they exploded for 9 runs in the bottom of the 8th, highlighted by a Danny Tartabull grand slam.
Geuterman, now staked with a 6 run lead, pitched like the champion he was, and only allowed 3 more runs in the 9th to get a well deserved win. Final score: Yanks 13-Milwaukee 10.

I met Capone and Baloo at the New Haven Memorial Coliseum setting in Section 14. They told me about the Section 39 scene and I started posting on Section 39.com.
I don't get to as many games at the Stadium as I would like, and due to the job I have (and some interesting personal issues that I have had to deal with) I was hosed out of a few events that I always look forward to (Baloo's birthday, softball, etc...).
