The only time I am interested in the book value of a card is when I want to buy it to make sure I don't get totally ripped off. However, depending on the player I might not even care if it is someone I collect. I just ordered 2 more Lind autos on eBay, and ordered some cards last night on Beckett.

Adam Lind has the worst arm in baseball.

I just got a new shipment in today of mostly mid to early 90's Yankees. I got this 1998 Rivera simply because of the goofy photo on the back of the card (which i can't link to on here)...I think it cost me 50 cents or 75 cents. Not $40.00 like a Pascual Perez that nobody but Balls cares about. Click on the link here and then find 'back of card' to check it out. It's pretty funny: www.beckett.com/items/787328/?N=0#I also got this goodie in the batch... I was watching this series vs Toronto and didn't get the obsession with Adam Lind cards either. I guess people just collect what they collect for different reasons. I have no interest in the monetary value of these things. They are family heirlooms and I'm simply doing my part to keep that tradition alive and pass them along to some kid in my family when i'm old and dicrepid. If I was going to make money off of cards, I would have a long time ago. The things I own have way too much personal value to me to ever get rid of...like a set of 1938 PlayBall cards featuring Lefty Gomez and Charles King King Keller that my grandad gave me.

LOL at the picture on the back of that card. That pic could spell trouble in the hands of a Boston fan. Who took that pic and said, "this would look great on the back of your card...we're going to go for it!" I have decided for sure that I am going to be doing an order this coming weekend. I will keep ya'll posted on the booty I bring in. As to Lind, I cant say much...I got a bunch of Eric Munson cards.

I went to a baseball card shop today because it's one I have never been to. I always pass through shops to see if I could find any good deals on cards. I see this guy has a whole shelf of Jeter cards and I'm looking to add to my collection. I ask the guy how much for Jeter. He says, $3. I say, Each? He says anywhere from $3-$5. I walk to the next case and he asks if he wants me to get them for him. I tell him, no I'm ok. I don't like spending that much on one card. I'm cheap.
He says, Everyone else that walks in here is cheap, why should you be any different?
Guess what card shop I am never shopping at again?

There's a reason a lot of card shops are as dry as the desert, and as empty as the ballroom at a high school reunion for the class of 1912. Overpriced cards, shaky selections. I would love to paw through cards but I dont want to be hassled as I do so, nor do I want to have nothing but a choice of the "in" cards.
Beckett does me fine, although I am game for a card show down the line. I miss just picking up heaps of dime cards out of boxes. Dana ran into a cool thing at a local card shop once though, an autograph grab-bag of chance. $5, you reach in and blindly grab a real autographed card. Could be a great player, could be someone you dont know.

OK, now let me tell you what cracks me up about this thread. I post a Mariano autograph card that I pulled from a $50 box, a Robinson Cano card that most people would think is unreal, another Cano auto card.... Yet, you are wondering why I collect Adam Lind... I don't understand why you are proud of David Cone, but whatever it's cool that you are back into collecting cards. As for Tom, he does lots of odd things, so this I think nothing of.
However, I am collecting the Lind cards as sort of a project that will be relatively cheap. Just trying to see how many of his 234 cards (aside from printing plates, black refractors, and other 1/1's-- if anyone other than Suzy even understood that) I can get.
I'm perplexed as to how I post those 3 autographs, and no one thinks anything of those, but notices crappy Adam Lind. Kind of ironic, huh?

In response to your PSA question MSB, to obtain a grading on a card, ball, or any memoribilia you want authenticated or graded you have to send it to PSA/DNA, or BGS and pay to have it graded. It takes at least 2 weeks I believe, I had mine back in about a month because I didn't pay for fast shipping.

Hey you, dont be chagrined about the lack of public pop over the auto cards. I know at least I am sufficiently impressed. I enjoy the auto cards, and have a heap in my books. Lots of uni swatches too. And I do the same thing you do with Lind, to an extent, with other marginal players. Keep posting your cards, I'm down with it. But I could not ignore Lind's horrible arm.

LOL, I am not getting disappointed with the thread or annoyed or anything. I buy more baseball cards in a week than most people buy in 2 years, I don't care. I will never say he is any good, I just had a bunch of his cards to start including an auto so I decided why not see how many I get.
My main collections are Pujols, Jeter, A-Rod (since he came up), Cano, Cabrera, and many many others.

Yes, but the problem with collecting an Adam Lind is that the well may run dry - he is no lock to stick around in the majors. He gets sent down, his prospect cards are done and through, and there are no more major league cards to collect. He may not be a lock for a building collection, as he's not that special a player and may not be around.

I know that, and I'm fine with it. I just wanted something to keep my occupied for a cheap price. If he gets sent down, oh well. I have my big money players that I buy cards of, like Cano. He is relatively cheap to buy, between $20-$30 something an auto.
I love buying baseball cards, thats all. Honestly, I have a problem because I buy way too many.
TIP-- You can find packs in Target from past years for $1.59 under all the current packs and boxes.

Found this little keeper this weekend in a thrift shop that I haunt. The guy gave it to me. I am rather proud of my collection of cards and other stuff. We should have a small gathering for us "collectors" so that we can take a look at what we've all got.

I would do that, however I would need a UHaul to show my cards. LOL I just opened a Hobby box of 2007 Topps Turkey Red, and all I can say is wow. I got way more than you are "supposed" to get according to the odds. I love this set every year, especially this year. I have one more box to open, and one box on the way. Almost all RC'S including Hughes, Clippard, Dice-K, Dice-K checklist, Gordon, Kouzmanoff, Owings, Young, etc etc. I had another scan of a Mantle, ARod, and a bunch of other Chrome cards, but my computer didn't save it. I'll scan those later if you are interested you can email me or go to webshots.

I think most of us would be in the same situation.
Shipping my cards from the West coast to my house in CT required a pallet.

And how many of those favorite cards are going to end up being left behind on a subway train, or smelling of beer at the end of the day?

You should get involved in a good old fashioned game of flipping.

Post by yanksgooner on Sept 26, 2007 9:38:13 GMT -5
Yeah, right...flipping... Thats just what I need to do...start flipping cards like my '66 Koufax and '60 Warren Spahn in exchange for a 2007 Adam Lind Chrome Nugget Hugger Bowman Excitement series #4 of 8 or framed autographed fabric swatch from Julio Lugo's jock strAp.
Which reminds me, balls...I need to get that set of Rocky cards to show you.

You had nothing to say about a Rivera Auto, or several Cano auto's..... I have yet to hear you mention any auto cards??

At any rate, I am not going to be flipping cards, or traveling with my cards to a bar. Too valuable to me to have anything happen to them.

I'm not starting trouble, relax homegirl. It was a joke aimed at Balls, I just happened to rehash the Adam Lind convo as an example.
The autographs I have are ones that I actually obtained in person.

LOL @ homegirl.
I highly suggest you guys hit up Target for some cards. It's the bestest. I will probably make a trip there later, since I meant to go before work. I got sidelined by any injury my dog had.

Come on now, you'd never bring a card that is actually good to flip. I know I would not risk my Pascual Perez error card on such foolishness.
I definitely want to see those Rocky IV cards.
