So this guys name has been bandied about here and there as a possible fix. Some are citing him as a possible #1 starter. But one report I just read simply said "scouts think he is better than Hideki Irabu." Eh...thats not necessarily all we are looking for here.
Here's the glitch in this. The Mariners are really hot for this guy, and there are reports they will bid up to 30 million for him. So heres the deal, if the Yankees want him, they are going to be throwing out #1 starter money for a totally unproven product.

They may have to do just that. The free agent pitching department is horrific and they literally have one starter (Wang) locked up for 2007 that's worth anything.
Better than Irabu is not an endorsement.
Mussina has to be re-signed. That would be two. Randy Johnson is not going to be completely ready by spring training, and even healthy, he sucks. Jaret Wright sucks. Carl Pavano sucks. So if Hideki Tojo is better than Wright, they really need to pursue him.

So much for lowering the payroll.

Drop Sheff and that's $13 million right there. Mussina is $17 million. You could probably get him at 2 years for $20 million. If you got this guy and failed to sign Mussina, the payroll is likely lowered at minimum by $20 million AFTER signing this guy. Even if you sign Mussina, you start with $20 million less in payroll and he won't be making $20 million.
Actually, another $3 million coming off the books with Jaret Wright.
They could sign this guy AND Zito and STILL likely lower payroll.

All opinions I've heard seem to indicate that he is a Hideki Arabu waiting to happen

The 30 million Tom is speaking is just the bid price for the right to negotiate with this pitcher. It will probably be another 40-50 million for a contract, so in reality that's another 60 million minimum. Jw

We'll have to wait and see if that happens. I doubt the Mariners would spend $60-$70 million on a guy who has never thrown a pitch in baseball.

Then if he's only an Irabu, let them tie up their funds for years to come.

It could, if they spend all their money in the wrong spot. And if they do, they deserve to lose. If they can't afford him, they should spend their money elsewhere.

What if he's fails in Seattle after they throw $50 million at him? They will be stuck in the basement for even longer. Imagine if they had the funds to spend their $ on another SP or 3 to overcome that decision that didn't pan out?? Wouldn't that give them a better shot at winning?
Or does payroll not matter?

If they are dumb enough to throw their budget at one player, they don't deserve to win. Compare that to a team with similar payroll, but wins. They spend it in the right spot.
Of course, after they blow all their money on one player, and at the same time drive up the market on similar players and worse players, they will simply do what all teams do when they fuck up.
Blame the Yankees.

Mac, are you aware of who exactly owns the Seattle Mariners?
I'm sure they would laugh at George Steinbrenner's checkbook...but BLAME THE YANKEES!

Every time I see this thread, I read the title and in my head I hear the voice of Jerome calling in to the Mac And Sid show in the 2002/2003 offseason referring to "This Japanese Outfielder."

His last name isn't hard to remember after all. Take the Matsu from Matsui, drop the I, and add a zaka. Matsuzaka. Here's a December 2006 photo from his signing:

Maybe he just signed another deal so he could retire as a Yankee as soon as the press conference with our Japanese friend was over.

No way is any team posting 30 million. The guy is good, but there isn't a player in baseball that is worth a 30 million posting price.

Good question brought up by dan patrick. What's to stop the Blue Jays, in an effort to keep the Yanks and Sox from getting this guy, bid $45 million for the rights to negotiate, then lowballing him by offering him a deal he obviously wouldn't take?
