Oooo....we missed it. It was this past Saturday. MTV2 will air "Iron Maiden Makes An Album" — a half-hour program where MTV goes behind the scenes of IRON MAIDEN's new collection, "A Matter of Life and Death" — on Saturday, August 26 at 11:30 p.m. EST. more information is available at www.vh1.com. I am going to poke around and see if there are any replays of said event, especially as the date of the actual album release draws closer.

Well, keep in mind that the new CD will also be offered with a documentary on the making of the album included. Not sure if its the same one, or maybe a longer one.

According to a posting on the IRON MAIDEN fan site MaidenFans.com, MAIDEN recorded four B-sides during the sessions for their new album, "A Matter of Life and Death" — to be used on an upcoming single, currently expected to be "Different Worlds". The four extra songs that were allegedly recorded are as follows:
ZZ TOP – "Tush" THIN LIZZY – "Angel of Death" DEEP PURPLE – "Space Truckin'" FOCUS – "Hocus Pocus"
There has been no official word yet on where these cover versions will end up or whether all of them will be released at all.

If they were going to cover a ZZ Top side, they should have done Mexican Blackbird.
I can't remember where I read it (I know it was in Rolling Stone, or Creem, or BAM), but when Jimmy Hendrix was asked who his favorite guitarist was, he said Billy Gibbons. Interesting since he rarely rates on guitar lists.

Just got done spinning the entire disc for the first time. Took a jaunt at lunch, picked it up at Tower for $13.99. Includes a bonus DVD which, as we speculated, contains a 30 minute "making of" feature, the Benjamin Breeg video, performance of a studio session for the tune "Different World" and a photo gallery. Starting to go around the second time now. I like what I heard. I hear why some were calling it "dark." Its going to take a couple of listens. Its not 1983 Maiden anymore, nothing jumped out at me like "Run to the Hills." But there were moments where I was just like, whoa. This is excellent stuff. The first tune is the only one that seems to have a commercial bent to it. The rest is very progressive, the songs are long, its dark, and the lyrics are Maiden to the core.
Go get it!

IRON MAIDEN's "A Matter of Life and Death" is on track to sell about 60,000 copies in its first week of release — significantly more than the 40,000 first-week tally registered by its predecessor, 2003's "Dance of Death" (which landed at No. 18 on The Billboard 200 chart), and that of "Brave New World", which moved 38,000 copies in June 2000 to land at No. 39 on The Billboard 200 chart.

Heading out to the Coliseum next Thursday for the show, pretty stoked.
Just a heads up - if anyone is going and does not know the new CD, get it and school yourself on it. They are opening up the show by playing it in its entirety. They are then closing with 5 or so "classics."
An ambitious move, and I have no problem with it, but the guys like 41 in crowd will be grumpy. This said, if you want to hear "Number of the Beast" live, put in one of the couple of dozen live CD/DVDs.

Well, I shall preface things by saying that I really liked the show. But there was an overhanging air of controversey amongst many fans, regarding the material played.
Maiden is very proud of this new album. As they should be, its excellent. And you can hear snippets of just about every other album they did all over it. Well, they decided to open the show by playing the whole thing, front to back. This did not sit well with the many who either dont know or care for the new stuff, or simply want to hear "the classics."
Crowd at Nassau was pretty respectful, cept the dummy who held up a "Play Classics" sign that Bruce grabbed and ripped up on stage. When the completed the new portion, they got a respectful hand. Then they ripped into Fear of the Dark, which was the first of 6 "classics" to close the show. No question the fans were much more into the "classics."
But here is the deal, I support Maiden on this one. I am glad I got to see something historical, in that I will never see this album performed back to back again, or hear most of those songs live ever again. Maiden already has a heap of nostalgia tours on thier agenda (their whole Ozzfest thing was classics, and in 2000 they simply played their top 20 as voted by the fans) - in 2007/08 they will be going around playing selections from Powerslave and Somewhere in Time. So they have a right to do this.
I thought the sound was great, the live show was excellent, and you wont hear any complaints from me, although a lot of drunks were grumbling on the way out that they got it stuck up their ass by Maiden for not playing "The Trooper" for the 100,000th time.

I echo Tom's comments exactly. The show was excellent. The people complaining are the ones who didn't own the new album.
I felt priveleged to be able to see all of the new songs performed live.

The chick I was talking to at the Red Hot Chili Peppers show tonight said Maiden only played four songs at the Continental Airlines Arena (besides the new CD, obviously). Not horribly sorry I didn't end up going.

She's wrong. They played six. I have seen all the setlists (which are actually the same, which is the one mistake they made)
Bruce put it best himself when he snarled a while back, "we will NOT be a cabaret band." The band has earned their stripes, and if they are proud of the release and want to do it back to back, well, good for them. Again, as a true Iron Maiden fan, I loved it.

Christina Fuoco of LiveDaily.com recently conducted an interview with IRON MAIDEN guitarist Dave Murray. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow:
On playing their new album, "A Matter of Life and Death", in its entirety during their current tour:
Dave Murray: "MAIDEN have always done the songs that everyone wants to hear. They're great songs. We love playing them. But it was a case where it's a challenge for us to play the new album. It pushes us a little bit further. It's just a lot of great fun playing these songs.
"We thought the songs were so strong it justifies playing them live. There's a lot of highs and kind of lows — there's a lot of moods with these songs. They're not just straight-ahead bang, bang, bang. There's quite a lot of quiet passages and where it changes tempos. The fans can stand there and listen to the music as opposed to going out there and bashing their head away for two hours. This is a very musical set. You can really get down with it, or, if you want to sit down and listen to it, you can do that too. On every level, you have a nice balance during the set."
LiveDaily.com: How did you make the decision to play all of "A Matter of Live and Death" in concert? It's pretty ambitious.
Dave Murray: "I know. [Laughs] When we were making the album, we just had a really good vibe in the studio. We just felt each track was telling a story. The way we rehearsed and recorded, it felt really natural to play. A lot of stuff on this album, there's a lot of musical, kind of, tricky bits. When we play it live, we have to be right on top of it. It's a case of, it was going to be a challenge for us playing the type of music we've created. We thought, "Well, every tour we've come out and we've been playing a lot of the old material, maybe two, three, four, five, six songs from the new album." We just felt like, "Let's do this whole album." The reaction from the other night was quite stunning, so we thought we had made the right decision. It could fall flat on its face because the music is so strong with the melodies. As well, I think the fans have had enough time — the ones who have the album — they're coming to the show, they know the tunes. It's been out for a few weeks. Hopefully, they would have played it to death. Watching them, they would sing along, they were listening, they were singing along to all the new stuff. We're doing some of the older material, but they have to wait for that until the end. In a way, we feel now this time of IRON MAIDEN [where] it's justified. "Let's do the new album." There will be other tours when we're going out doing all the older stuff. So, this time around, let's just do this and see what happens.
LiveDaily.com: What do you see for the future of IRON MAIDEN? Will you continue cranking out albums?
Dave Murray: "Absolutely. We're touring until the end of the year, and then we're going to take some time off and maybe do something next year. We definitely have plans to do another studio album. Obviously, the dust hasn't settled on this one. There's definitely plans to make a new studio album but fans won't see that for a couple more years.

IRON MAIDEN's "Different World" single has entered the Billboard Hot Singles Sales chart at position No. 7.
The Hot 100 Singles Sales (also known as Singles Sales) is a chart released weekly by Billboard magazine in the United States. It measures sales of commercial singles and is one of three component charts, along with the Hot 100 Airplay and the Hot Digital Songs, that determine the chart positions of singles on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
MAIDEN's first-ever commercial single release in the U.S., "Different World" features Radio 1 Zane Lowe's "Legends" session of "Hallowed Be Thy Name" and "The Trooper" as B sides. These tracks have previously been used as B sides to "The Reincarnation of Benjamin Breeg", which was released in Europe in August. Although it was not eligible for the U.K. chart, it reached No 1 in Spain, Sweden, Finland and Hungary.
IRON MAIDEN's new album, "A Matter of Life and Death", has sold 135,000 copies in the United States since its Sept. 5 release, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Here's a funny note. Dana subscribes to PEOPLE Magazine, and regularly blitzes through their crossword puzzle. One of the clues in this weeks issue that she pointed out to me was "Iron ____'s "Two Minutes To Midnight."
LOL! Not only was Maiden a clue in a PEOPLE crossword puzzle, they used a song that, aside from the metal community, was never actually "out there."

That is awesome Tom.
After I got my kids to sleep last night I hit the KOHL's nightowl sale. When I walked in the door there in front of me was a IRON MAIDEN KILLERS TOUR shirt. It was only $9.00, but was an XL, I tore the rack apart looking for at least a large but hoping for a medium, no luck.

IRON MAIDEN Frontman On Touring, Flying, War And Religion - Dec. 8, 2006 icWales recently conducted an interview with IRON MAIDEN frontman Bruce Dickinson. A few excerpts from the chat follow:
Q: There's a lot of variety on the new album? With two studio albums recorded with this line-up, did you feel it was time to take a chance?
Bruce: Well, we had a go at that on the last record and I think we were thinking about it a bit more on the last record, whereas on this album it was all very instinctive, it all happened very naturally and very quickly. The last album took a long time to record, and this one was very quick, very live, so that gives me a good clue that we're doing the right thing. And of course the thing just sounds fantastic anyway, it's a really heavy record, so it was relatively effortless, like putting your foot down when you've got a really big engine in the car — it just goes, you know?
Q: The main themes of the album seem to be war and religion.
Bruce: Well, it's real life as it surrounds us. When I was a kid, it was all about the Cold War and the four-minute warning, and we were all going to get dissolved into some radioactive cinder at the drop of a hat, and then the Berlin Wall came down and we all went, "Ah, there you go, there's only AIDS now then, that's the only thing that's going to get us." There's a few other things now — terrorists, fundamentalists and dirty bombs and droughts and global warming and bird flu and God knows what — so there's a whole bunch of like mini-apocalypses out there, you know, waiting to come and get you. We are a kind of blokey sort of a band, I mean we're not like an emo band — we're not like new men and all that kind of stuff. We're blokes — wars and battles and struggles and things like that, strikes a chord you know? We have kids and things, so you sit there and think, "Well what kind of a world are our kids going to grow up in?” So I think, it touches all the bases really. War and religion.
Q: In your other job as an airline pilot, you must fly to lots of different places which probably makes you reflect on the nature of war.
Bruce: I've been in one or two war zones, not necessarily with the airline. Years ago I ended up in Bosnia in the middle of the war in Sarajevo, that was a very sobering experience. That left a permanent impression on me. In one or two of the African countries we fly to I've seen the after effects of wars. Civil wars and things like and they're pretty vile actually. You can't believe the depths of barbarity that people will stoop to, particularly with respect to children. But the other thing is the way people bounce back. It's the way they survive and live and continue — that's the other remarkable thing. So you know there's always some kernel of hope within all this carnage.
Q: How do you reconcile your twin careers as an airline pilot and singer in IRON MAIDEN?
Bruce: Oh well when I'm an airline pilot, I'm an airline pilot and I do everything I need to do on my days off. Book some holiday. It's great on your holiday to do an IRON MAIDEN record. It's cool. What did you do on your holiday? Oh I made an IRON MAIDEN record you know. Great. Obviously when we go on tour you know the band's the thing.
Q: In a lot of places IRON MAIDEN are bigger now than ever . You must be very pleased.
Bruce: Yeah I can't recall ever doing two Earls Courts with IRON MAIDEN at any point in our career, in addition to doing all these other places as well. So it's enormous. I mean, don't forget we got a gold record in England for the last album, which did well over 100,000 copies. You know we haven't been doing those sorts of album sales for 10 or 15 years in the U.K. So it's doing pretty good.

So last night I pulled out my "Early Years" DVD, cause one of the zings on it is a show Maiden played at the Rainbow in London, which was filmed as one of the first "concert videos" that were put to market. The date of the show was December 21st, 1980, which was 26 years ago last evening.
Nice set, but only 6 early tunes. Some editing snafus, as Dianno's leather jacket being off, then back on, then off, in the course of a song. But the spirit was there. It was cool to see Harris, Murrray, and Smith jamming together on "Transylvania" - still a concert staple ripped by those guys (along with Gers) almost 30 years later.
Any Maiden fan who does not have this DVD needs to get out and grab.

NICE! Tomorrow night, Tuesday the 15th, at 8PM (with numerous repeated showings to come) on VH1 - CLASSIC ALBUMS the featured opus is Iron Maiden's "Number of the Beast." I have seen a heap of these listed, for discs from bands like Genesis, Pink Floyd, Metallica, Judas Priest, Steely Dan, etc et al. But this is MAIDEN, folks.
Show is pretty cool, well, at least the 10 minutes i saw one time of the Floyd "Dark Side of the Moon" offering. Interviews with those involved in the making of the music, and all other minutia.
Watch it!
