It was cool. Both episodes were about operations launched by the ATF to infiltrate both clubs (Mongols and Hells Angels). MCs ("gangs") are a culture that I'm pretty familiar with. My sponsor is fully-patched member of the Vagos (sponsor not pictured here)... ...plus when I was a punk kid I was in a punk-rock gang based in Riverside (CA) loosely affiliated with the L.A.D.S. (LA Death Squad) and there was a lot of PCP action between people I was tight with and various local chapters of the Hells Angels. I think its pretty comical the way many MCs these days, even though a large percentage of guys are in it just for the comradery, are attempting to portray an almost Guardian-Angels type image, when in fact organized criminal activity is a large part of their culture. Anyway Vinny...good stuff...watch it.

Sure you weren't in the Satyrs, Cho?
Most of the South Bay were Pagans when I was coming up.
The new clubs are all 99 percenters. Fags.

HAHA!!! Nope, not the Satyrs, nor Oedipus.
The Vagos have blown up here in SoCal. I was in a car club some years back (not a gang..a club) and we had some sort of symbiosis with various members of local Vagos chapters due to the similar culture, music, punk rock, rockabilly shit, etc... You see way more Vagos riding the OC freeways than you see Hells Angels anymore. Seeing MC members rolling in 30 or 40 deep at a punk show was commonplace in the late 80s/early 90s whether it was the Vagos at a Cadillac Tramps gig in OC or the Hells Angels at a Social Distortion show at the Ventura Theater. But I do remember one of the worst riot/punk rock shows I ever saw was Suicidal Tendencies/Social Distortion at DeAnza Theater (Riverside)....Hells Angels regulated that fucking thing....I remember cement parking space bumper things being thrown through cop car windows. I also remember Social D hiring the Hells Angels (some sort of tribute to the Stones, I guess) to "control" the pit at an outdoor show on the UCSD campus - I remember Ness came out in an almost comical pompadour that had to be at least two feet tall, some Rolling Stones Chuck Taylor high tops....no one was killed like by the Red And White that day like at the Stones concert in the 60s, but more than a few acne-faced teen-aged punkers were pummeled at the hands of these bikers. I also remember a big fight broke out when I was at the Inkslingers Ball some years back - some Vagos took umbrage with the fact that the Hells Angels were selling t-shirts and other paraphernalia. I guess they figured they were commercializing and selling out the "outlaw biker" scene...I can kinda see the point, but the truth is you can not (or at least SHOULD NOT be able to) buy souvenirs depicting the Hells Angels MC, but rather support items that imply Hells Angels with the term "The Red And White."
99 percenters...hahah....kinda like the Yankees and the 98ers! HAHA!

I very much enjoyed that Gil Hodges doc. In fact, when I noticed a few days ago that it was being replayed I was going to run on here to recommend such.
Last night I watched a kickass Andrew Jackson documentary on History Channel. They do a bang-up job on these. It wasnt cut with a series of old black and whites, it was reenacted over the tones of the moderator, and a very zippy watch. I grew a newfound interest in Jackson and his times and methods.
Rung in at 2 hours, but it did not waver. It was funny to see all the Indians that are still pissed off at him, or hear asides on how the guy who wanted to do away with paper money now graces the $20 bill. Gives me a hankering to play A.O.D's "$20 bill" right now, I'll telll ya.
So check it out - Andrew Jackson.

No since the original Jackass season, has there been this high quality juvenile debauchery on Television.
Kenny Vs. Spenny is ABSOLUTELY season-pass (Tivo lingo) worthy! CHECK IT!

Eh, I saw the description in the listings, and cant tell you how uninteresting the premise is to me. Just as I shunned the Jackass genre, I will pass on shows that have two guys trying to see who can make the smelliest farts, or go the longest without sprouting wood when looking at porn.
As to us, I need to clear some serious DVR space. The holidays are wreaking havoc. I am DVRing all the standards, and they are piling up, although we will start watching some tonight and make a dent. I have some Christmas movies, including my entry into the Bad Movie Club (Mass, still owe ya - coming soon on Christmas Caper) and the one with Jenny McCarthy as Santa's daughter.
I have to clear space for a giant squid movie on Sci-Fi Saturday night. I am also DVRing Polar Express (2 and half hours worth, cause of commercials) on ABC-Fam cause we never saw, or bothered to buy.
Right now I am running at a cool 94% of capacity.

I'm in the same boat Tom ... as fast as I can make DVDs with my new DVD recorder, new crap is being recorded.
Excellent Tiger Shark doc last night - Deadly Stripes: Tiger Sharks!
I guess as far as Kenny vs Spenny goes, it's like Jackass...you either love it or hate it. I was enthralled with Jackass when it first came out, as I am now with Kenny vs Spenny.

Cho, I remember way back when you mentioned chagrin at missing the special on the chupacabra I had seen, and shrugged it off knowing it would be on again. Well, tomorrow night on National Geographic Channel at 10PM, you can see it.

So on the 25th anny of Duk Koo Kim getting killed at the hands of Ray "Boom Boom" Mancini, ESPN-2 aired quite the doc on Mancini, followed by a movie chronicaling the unfortunate Mr Duk Koo Kim.
The doc was excellent, just got around to watching it a month later. One creepy thing about it was the regular sports crawler showing Sean Taylor out indefinatly with a knee injury every couple of minutes. I did not know much about Mancini, even though I was a passing boxing fan back in that day. I watched a lot of boxing when I was a kid, for reasons I am not sure of - it did not really continue. My passion for the ring drifted to the theatrics of wrestling (not like boxing did not have many of its own theatrics)
I dont remember watching that Mancini / Kim fight, but remember the aftermath, and being crushed about it. It was very sad. Kims Mom ended up committing suicide not long after, and many forget that referee Richard Green followed suit 7 months after the fight. The tragedy surely lingered on that one. Mancini lost his endorsements, and was never looked at the same way, although he (nor shoddy officiating) were at fault - the fight was frantic, and the referee did not flub by keeping it going too long.
What really kept it too long was the arcane boxing rules that had fights going up to 15 rounds. Due to this tragic encounter, that was changed as it was pretty obvious that most dreadful injuries happened in rounds 13-15, they found.
I think the doc is actually on again today, you guys should keep an eye out for it. I am going to watch that movie that followed soon.

I actually DVR'd a boxing match too. Roy Jones Jr. vs James "Lights Out" Toney from 1994.
This fight was hilarious. RJJ made Toney, a brutal brawler, look like a stumbling bumbling buffoon.
RJJ was just incredible for his time. Some might argue that the middle and super middle-weight division weren't up to snuff when Jones ruled them for over a decade, but Jones can hardly be blamed for that. He fought ALL COMERS in his divisions. The fact is, no boxer in the history of boxing ... not Tyson, not Holmes, not Ali, not Louis, not Marciano ... ever so thoroughly and completely dominated TWO divisions (not to mention winning world titles in two more divisions) for the length of time that Jones did. That's not up for debate....Ali himself wouldn't deny that.
Of course, Roy Jones Jr. isn't ever going to make anyone forget Ali or Marciano and company...he doesn't have anywhere close to the impressive resume of superbouts that those guys had. So I don't mean to imply that he's the Babe Ruth of boxing....but he was, for a long time span, without a close second, the best pound for pound fighter on the planet....whereas when Ali, Tyson, Marciano, Louis fought....there were other fighters out there that could arguably be in the same conversation.

Too bad for Kim, Richard Steele wasn't the ref. He'd be alive today. Hell, he might have even given Kim the TKO for hurting Mancini's fists.

Oh, Richard Steele was a friend of the ill-fated ref. I think the ref was Greene? Another colored fellow with Eddie Murray-ish facial chops.

One of my burning interests is the Civil War. A while back, I am stunned how long ago it was, History Channel did a 2 hour doc on Shermans March. Its been rotting on my DVR since April. I finally watched it over two nights this week. Great work, as usual, by the History Channel.
I have touched on this style of doc before, they have actors playing the roles, just walking about and doing stuff as being described by the narrarator. At times there is dramatization, but its not over the top or dripping with cheese. They do a great job, and that is coming from the most cynical guy in the world when it comes to dramatizing things.
One funny note on the doc was how the freed slaves were handled. Able-bodied men were invited to tag along, offering help in work detail. Women, children, the aged, and Dads with family were told to stay behind or make their way somewhere else. Of course they straggled along anyway, eating food needed for the troops and slowing them down. Well, 30 miles out of Savannah the troops needed to build a pontoon bridge to cross a roaring stream. Once they were across, they pulled the thing and left the slaves behind.
So they screamed and howled, and some dummies leaped into the creek, where most drowned. What a friggin' mess.

I always found those dramatizations funny, and wondered how does one get a job playing in those things?
So did they just show actors dressed up throwing torches on houses and such?

I have read in a few places that generally they use reenactors. I dont think they are paid much if anything. I guess they just get giddy to do things.
Some of the guys are more accomplished, and I suppose better casted. They got a dead ringer for old Abe, even though all he had to do was a scene where he strolled across an expanse of lawn with the guys playing Sherman and Grant. I thought the guy playing Sherman did a good representation, and was very impressed with the gent playing Andrew Jackson in the recent doc I saw on Old Hickory.
Yeah, they had actors tossing torches, marching along, standing by campfires drinking bad coffee out of a tin. I kept seeing the same lone black guy in a lot of the scenes, so that cast as pretty small. Come to think of it, they never had more than a dozen fellows on screen at once, there was not much battle reenacting.

Cho, I was the same way, unless it was being played for laughs. But watch one of these documentaries and get back to me on what you think. The one they did about the Mayflower crossing, also using this method, was the best of the bunch.

Nope, absolutely not. And the documentary was just one of another long line in things I have read/watched since that were the ones to help pooh-pooh all that. There were no buckles on the hats or pantloons with white stocking and clodhopper shoes. That was the figment of some painters imagination, who had a fetish for buckles and too much black and white paint.

Fishzilla: Snakehead Invasion
Good documentary about an Asian carnivorous fish called a "Snakehead" that has the ability to breathe air and "walk"/undulate across land. These fish had been smuggled in live by Korean and Chinese Americans for use to make a special medicinal type of soup...and some live snakeheads were set free in both east coast and west coast rivers and lakes...the snakehead invasion reached epidemic proportions in Maryland.
