Tomorrow, I have the pleasure of reporting for duty at the Suffolk County Criminal Court. 90 miles roundtrip and $4/gal...such joy.

Dave had to go to Riverhead when he got called... that was 3 years ago, I think. I think this thread jinxed me... I got the questionnaire about 2 weeks ago and finally got around to filling it out online

Anything I've wanted, I ended up with the opposite...
Central Islip would've been ideal for me but I got sent to Riverhead.
Gave answers to questions that I thought would get me excused...they're still keeping my ass.
Have to go back on Tuesday for the jury to be finalized. There are 18 of us that have to go through the voir dire process. 11 are needed to complete the jury and select alternates. Do the math, there's a damn good chance that I'm going to be selected. Also, my chances are damn good because I'm sure the defense will want to pull for a diverse jury...if you know what I mean.

Honestly, I have heard that if they think you are trying to wrangle out and giving predictable "I want out" answers, they are going to jerk you around.
People are better off just giving honest answers. If they slant too far to making them think you dont want to be there, they are going to make you miserable and keep you around.

I finally did my first Jury Duty last year and it wasnt that bad...I was kind of shocked and to be honest, maybe even a little upset that they didnt pick me. What the hell was wrong with me ...Well anyway ..you should of heard the stupid answers ppl were giving. The judge excused them from the jury but put them back on the list which means they would get called again. They were pretty stupid because if you go through the process, you can't get called for 6 years now. So stop trying to get out of it and answer the questions honestly. Based on character alone there is a slim chance any here will get selected as a Juror. Hlaf day and no more for 6 years...Not sure about the city but In Nassau and Suffolk its 6yrs. My wife love serving Jury duty ..she actually volunteered...

I don't know that I could legitimately exercise the objectivity required to actually sit on a jury.
For example, I am sure that if I were involved in some sort of case surrounding divorce, custody, support....I'd tend toward siding with the father only because I am well versed in some of the draconian laws in place in this country working to the detriment of divorced dads.
On a lighter note, but in all seriousness, if it were evident that I defendant were a Red Sox fan, again....I don't know that I'd be objective.

How would you find OUT if he were a Red Sox fan? A defendant should be wearing a suit, and likely would not be wearing a Boston hat.

I know that Balls. I'm just sayin' IF.
Maybe he does like the rental car commercial and proclaims to the jury, "How ya doin'...I'm wicked psyched be heahhh...you guys ready to prove some innocence?"

A defendant should be wearing a suit, and likely would not be wearing a Boston hat. Depends on the suit. If it's the jail issued jumpsuit, then no but if the defendant is wearing his own clothes then you never know.

I was talking to a friend who is a paralegal. Her advice on getting out of jury duty is to reschedule for a friday before a long weekend. Most courts have light case loads on fridays, and thus will not have a need a for a jury. The hoilday weekend then turns into a 3.5 day weekend. Very nice!

The problem with everybody wanting to shirk their civic duty is due to finances. Why the fuck doesn't the government pass a law stating that employers must pay for jury duty, or at least make employers pay a sizable portion and then the federal government could supplement. If I got my regular day's pay, I wouldn't think twice about serving.

My company pays full salary for jury duty. And in New York, the state pays a stipend ($50?ish) to those whose employers don't pay.

Well Domi, while I understand your gripe - all of these neocons on the board discussing the best strategies to avoid their civic duty - it is helluva a lot easier to chastise them when you're getting a full day's pay.
But I hear ya.

$50 is garbage money. And many companies do not pay for more than a few days of jury duty, if at all. As was pointed out before, most criminals are liberals anyway. Let the conservatives work for a living and the liberals deal with their own.

If I got my regular day's pay, I wouldn't think twice about serving. I totally agree with you. I had to use my vacation time so I wouldn't lose pay while I served. Losing money due to jury duty is such bull. The $40 that you get from the County from your 4th day onward doesn't cover gas; if I drove to Riverhead for something work related, I would get $45 from my company to cover the miles. Anyway, I am officially done with jury duty. Had to be at the court by 11:30 so I left the office at 10. The voir dire process took place from 12 to 1 and by 1:15, I found out I've been excused. Got back to work by 2:30; it's a crappy day so it's not like I could do anything fun. My manager walked by my desk a few minutes day saying "I thought you had jury duty today."

Sometimes Balls actually contributes something worth pondering to the conversation.
This is not one of those times.

I served my two days and when we left yesterday the said we didn't have to come back today. It was really slow yesterday. I didn't even leave the main jury room. They called two different sets yesterday and I wasn't one of them. Sat and read my book all day. I got picked in the jury box on Tuesday but they dismissed me. I don't think she liked my tattoos. Case was a black guy with dreds selling pot in Paterson. I found it comical. Wanted to be part of it but hey, I can't complain. Got out a day early.

My company also pays full pay. For up to two weeks. I made out on the deal because I was only there three hours tops and I got paid for the whole day. And it happened to be a Monday that I was scheduled to work until 8 at night.

Our buddy Filip Bondy blogs for the Daily News website, and yesterday he blogged from one of the jury rooms as he too was serving. The room he was in had ESPN-2 on, and he was trying to make sure it stayed that way as a soccer game was kicking off on there in a couple of hours. I just found it funny he was blogging about what was a main source of fanfare on this board.
