How the hell can I get out of this? I just got my letter in the mail the other day. I always feared this day was coming. The only other time I went I was in and out the same day and they told me I didn't have to come back. Bear in mind, I sat there until mid-afternoon.
Tell me your experiences/stories and how I can beat the system.

Financial Hardship...easy. Works every time. Many companies won't pay you a full days pay for jury duty - if that's your case, claim financial hardship.

Just go in there and say you hate blacks. You'll be on your way out the door soon. But be ready to flash dukes with a black, if he happens to overhear.

I think he's looking for a way to get out of showing up altogether.
At least here in CA, you can can call in and explain, for example a financial hardship, and get out of it entirely.

I want a good thing to say in case they call me for a case. What can I say? Do I use, "My whole family are all cops so I'm gonna automatically side with the police officers?"

You could....but be prepared with names of these "police officers" as they may very well call you on it.

I heard that it has gotten tougher to get out of jury duty.
In 2001, I was called and it happened to be during a period when I had a lot of deadlines. I wrote a letter which my boss signed stating that 1) I'm a one-person department, 2) we have a considerable number of proposal deadlines, 3) proposals create backlog for upcoming projects which are the backbone of the company and 4) I should be OK to serve in 3 months.
I got a letter 3 months later which I ignored and I ended up moving out of state 3 months after that.
Earlier this year, a co-worker of mine got called for Grand Jury duty in Nassau County which required him to serve a 4 weeks. The "financial hardship" plea did not work for him.

This is a true story, I take care of my mom during the day (she's got medical problems). So just tell them your a caregiver during the day and they'll let you out of it.

I just went for jury duty a few weeks ago. The caregiver excuse does not work if you work full time. I can't even use the fact that I have a five year old to get out of it because I work. My mother on the other hand, uses my daughter because she watches her full time and does not work. If you have a bill or ID or something with and address in a county other than the one you were called for you can mail that in an get out of it because you are not a resident.
They actually will give you a case that they anticipate either settling or only taking a day or two if you tell them that you can't make a time commitment. My brother used that one. He got called for a case and he told them he was going on tour. He didn't even have to offer any proof. They put him back in the pool for another case and then he ended up getting sent home because that case settled.
When I went I was there from 8:30 or whatever until about 12. They called me into a room and said "You guys are the lucky ones. We had too many jurors and not enough cases today so you get to go home. See you in six years." There were two losers in my group that WANTED to serve and asked if they could come back the next day. And they weren't snoopy old ladies either.
When my dad got called it was for a car accident case where someone ran a stop sign. A couple weeks before my cousin, Chris, was in a similar accident and needed brain surgery so they let my dad go. So the "I know someone like that" excuse usually works. Not always though.

I do have a valid Florida ID but I need to change it to my married name so I can go with that concept but on the questionnaire that goes out before you get called asks if you are a resident. When my dad got called it was for a car accident case where someone ran a stop sign. A couple weeks before my cousin, Chris, was in a similar accident and needed brain surgery so they let my dad go. So the "I know someone like that" excuse usually works. Not always though. That's one way to get out of jury...claim to be close to somebody who is going through or went through a situation similar to the trial in question.

But keep in mind this will only work if there is not another trial rarin' to go around the same time. They can simply guide you that way instead.

Here's what I did--which was a case of getting lucky and making your own luck.
Unfortunately, the timing may make this tougher for you, but what I did was postpone until the closest week to Christmas as possible. Fewer cases, slower courts, better odds of not getting selected.
I didn't even get called into a jury room and was out in a day and a half.
The first time, I played the lawyer card. I just told the story about how one of my professors argued that picking a lawyer was not too good of a move because the lawyer can't turn off his/her training. It's like a lawyer representing himself having a fool for a client. They laughed and I was out of there.

Eh, if you "got lucky" or "made your own luck" you would not have been stuck there for " a day and a half."

I don't know how often you have had jury duty, but believe me, I did well. They let us out at 2:30 on the first day and noon the second. It did suck, but it could have been much worse.

Considering the last 4 people I know that had jury duty were out the same day, in anywhere from 3-5 hours, and did not have to go back, you did not do well.

The ID thing does work. I did it about three times. At this stage in the game it wouldn't work though. You have to do it on the questionaire part.
Balls, I was out in three and a half hours. Nassau County.

But if they don't know if you ever recieved the letter or not, how can they tell and make you go or arrest you? As far as they're concerned, I never got a letter saying I had jury duty. There was never such a letter in my mail box. There probbly was a problem as the post office or something.

If you know show you will get another letter.
If you no-show again, you will probably get a phonecall. And you will probably be "noted" and lets just say when you DO show up, you wont be going home early. They will have fun keeping you around.

I've gotten no phone call either. And should I get a call, I will tell them that I've never gotten a letter and was not aware I had to show up. What can they do then? And if they make me go, I make one Robert Reed or Terri Shiavo joke, and I'm out of there.

Remember every place is different, but here in Miami if you don't the Judge will cite you in competent of court and issue a bench warrant for your arrest. Which doesn't mean nothing until you get pulled over for taking that stop sign and the police runs your license and the warrant pops up, they will arrest you and take you to jail. Depending on what time of the day you get arrested, you could spend the night in jail and then get released in the morning as an ROR. If this sounds like something I experienced you would be right.

I was going to bring up the warrent thing. I have gone through that a couple of times myself, but not for the jury duty thing. I would have an open "drinking in public ticket" and skip the appearance, then get nabbed on another "drinking in public" - and where I would get a ticket and go on my way if there was no warrent, when there is you go "downtown."
They dont care about "lost in the mail " - you can take it up with the judge, as they say.

I think it's appalling that such comitted, hardline republicans and US government loyalists would fudge stories and concoct ways to get out of serving their civic responsibilites. disgusting and hypocritical.

As far as THIS Republican is concerned the criminal justice system is far too liberal. There are also far too many frivolous lawsuits and I want nothing to do with it.
