I started one of these over on section39 and people chimed in...and I had something to say so I didn't see another appropriate thread. So at the risk of being called an unnecessary thread starter, here it is:
I just heard the infamous Jerome on ESPN 710. I thought he had worn out his welcome every where, but apparently someone is taking his calls. I miss the entertainment value he used to provide on Mac and Sid.

So wait, he's reverted to calling out of state radio shows now?
The guy was one of the more annoying callers I have stumbled across flipping dials. It was not even his staged and phony rants that drove me up the wall, it was his later day "woe is me" calls...where he would go on and on about how bad his health was, like it was possibly his last call ever. He started talking about his next inevitable trip to the hospital, and what it was like to lay in bed all day.....worst caller ever.

Oh sorry, my fault. I said ESPN 710. That's incorrect. 710 is the L.A. affiliate. I listen to the New York station, 1050, via the internet - that's where he called. Sorry.

I agree...he was probably one of the most annoying callers EVER, but that's what drove his entertainment value up and off the charts. His calls were like a train wreck. Listening to a Jerome call is like watching Tom Cruise jump up and down on a couch on Oprah....you can't believe what you're witnessing and can't look way...my opinion anyway.

One thing I've noticed about African Americans (at least those who call into the Stephen A. Smith show) is that they feel the need to display an exorbitant qualification of their credentials to speak on the subject they are about to speak on. One caller today went something like this:
Stephen, I go back to the Richard Todd days. I go back the Joe Klecko Days. Stephen I respect you. I always have respected you. I remember when you first started filling in for Michael Kay. I'm the caller that called in and said I was glad Michael Kay was on vacation. I go back to the Mark Gastineau days. I've always loved your show Stephen. I'm from Jamaica Queens...I'm a political activist. I go back to the Joe Walton days Stephen...I've been a fan of your show since day 1.........................I think Patrick Ramsey should start.

LOL! I've noticed that, too, but not limited to any race. A lot of callers feel the need to give their credentials before sharing an opinion. "A-Rod sucks" isn't enough. "I've been a Yankee fan since I was three, I saw Mantle play at the old Stadium, my family's had season tickets for 40 years. A-Rod sucks," is the norm.

There's a black guy on the Michael Kay show right now, trying to make a point about racism's part in the Knicks fight....I think that he thinks he's more credible by referring to white people as "European Americans." (as if ALL white people are of European descent)
HAHAHA - it's ok, I think I speak for all white people when I say, we don't need the politically correct moniker....you can call us "Whitey"

Stephen A. Smith just used the word "y'all" 4 times in the span of one approximately 15 second thought he was trying to convey.

The Max Kellerman/Stephen Smith combo is the worst 4 hours of sports radio imaginable. Give us all 3 hours of dan patrick!

My problem with Stephan A. SmiFF is that he is just a complete ignoramous (evident by the fact that he can't even pronounce his own name properly).
Max Kellerman is more articulate...well, at least relatively....the problem with him is that he takes every rumor in sports, no matter how obscure or how unreliable the source, and presents it as if it's fact. I can't even count the number of times he had mega-stars coming to the Yankees via trade last season. Me being fairly new to Kellerman, I'm sitting here listening, thinking, "Ohh WOW, really?" Only to find out later that no other legit sports talk radio host found any of the rumors he reports even worthy of making it on the air.

Max Kellerman's Brother Murdered! James Butler, best known for sucker punching Richard Grant immediately following their bout in Nov. 2001, is being sought for questioning in connection with a homicide investigation in Los Angeles. The victim, Sam Kellerman, 29, is believed to be the brother of boxing analyst Max Kellerman. Police say Butler may be driving a bluish-green 1993 Cadillac Seville with Texas license plate number J04GHX. Anyone with information that may help in this investigation is urged to contact the Hollywood Area Homicide Unit at 213-972-2910 or 213-972-2912. Wednesday October 20, 2004

Because AT LEAST the New York sports talk radio has a lot of national coverage and I get to hear a lot of Yankees talk.
I can't stand listening to ALL-LAKER radio...because here in Southern California, all they talk about on sports talk radio is the Lakers. We don't have a football team that anyone cares about (yes, that statement includes the chargers), no one here gives a rat's ass about the Ducks or Kings, The Clippers are a joke, and the Dodgers and Angels get minimal coverage in the offseason.

But how is stupid Yankee talk better than no Yankee talk? You could not pay me to listen to the crap you listen to. Why not put on music for a while and forget about the baseball talk?
And if you are going to bother listening to this stuff, why not stream the FAN online? At least they know what they are talking about some of the time.

Well, when one is truly a fan (in the sense of the root meaning of the word - to be fanatical) as I am, and living in Southern California...I'll take it where I can get it.
Last time I checled The Fan didn't have streaming audio...only selected clips. If they now having streaming audio, I'll look into that. I'd much rather listen to Mike And The Mad Dog, than Kellerman and SmiFF.

I am sure many of you will be happy to know that Stephen A Smiths TV offering, the much maligned (and rightfully so) "Quite Frankly" was axed, with the last episode shown last Friday. ESPN said Smith will continue to do work for the network, in smaller doses to be sure.
I actually have an episode that will be saved for posterity, when he had some TNA wrestlers on to discuss the business.

I had to laugh at the PSA Smith did for ESPN today, on Martin Luther King Day...he did it in his most low-key, serious, toned-down voice...talking about lessons he learned from Dr. King about bringing "dignity to his race" in a rather articulate way.
YET....there he is on ESPN Radio every morning doing his version of a modern day Al Jolson act - hootin' and hollerin' and getting over-excited in Ebonics-riddle rants on the radio.....basically doing anything BUT bringing dignity to his race.
All that showed me is that Stephen A. Smith is perfectly capable of speaking in an articulate civilized, yet for his radio alter-ego Stephen A. SmiFF he perpetrates a front and transforms into The Hip Hop Bob Costas. What a crock!

The Petros and Money show on KLAC is unlistenable.
I listen to KLAC on line for Angels news/talk, but those mopes are just unentertaining. I need to trya nd listen to the T.J. Simers show, though. He's such an asshole in the newspaper that I need to hear what he says live.

See if you can find the TJ and Tracy Simers interview with Sean Avery of the LA Kings! Funny stuff.
The Loose Cannons Show, although still way too Laker-centric for me, is about the best Southern California has to offer in sports talk radio. Mychal Thompson is as bad on there as he is doing Laker games...he's so bad it's actually entertaining.

Mike Missanelli, who lost his WIP job in Philly in March 2006 after a run-in with a producer - just signed on as partner to Stephen A. Smith on Smith's weekday sports-talk show on New York's ESPN station (1050 AM) from noon to 2 p.m.

don't know him, but if means 50% less airtime for Stephen A., then it's a 1000% improvement
