Report: A-Rod, Manny highlight AL All-Stars Posted: July 5, 2008 (AP)
NEW YORK (AP) -- Alex Rodriguez and Manny Ramirez will highlight an American League All-Star team loaded with New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox, according to a report on the New York Post's website.
Balloting for the All-Star game ended Wednesday. Official results will be announced Sunday. All starters mentioned in the report led in fan voting as of June 30.
The Yankees' Rodriguez will start at third base and Derek Jeter at shortstop for the American League, according to the Post. Defending champion Boston's starters will include Kevin Youkilis at first, Dustin Pedroia at second and Manny Ramirez in left field.
Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz also got the most votes at his position, but won't play because of a wrist injury.
Cliff Lee, who had to fight for a job in the Cleveland Indians rotation this spring, will be the starting pitcher for the AL, the Post reported. Lee is 11-1 with a 2.26 ERA.
He'll go against the Arizona Diamondbacks' Brandon Webb, who will be playing in his third consecutive All-Star game and getting his first starting assignment.
Also starting for the American League: Seattle Mariners' Ichiro Suzuki in center, Texas Rangers' Josh Hamilton in right and Minnesota Twins' Joe Mauer behind the plate.
Suzuki was barely leading the Los Angeles Angels' Vladimir Guerrero and Yankees' Bobby abreau for the final outfield spot in the voting as of June 30.
Lance Berkman of the Houston Astros will start at first for the National League. Philadelphia Phillies' Chase Utley got the nod at second, Atlanta Braves' Chipper Jones will play third and Florida Marlins' Hanley Ramirez narrowly beat out Miguel Tejada of the Astros at shortstop.
The outfield will consist of Alfonso Soriano of the Cubs in left, teammate Kosuke Fukudome in center and Cincinnati Reds Ken Griffey Jr. in right. The Cubs' Geovany Soto will be the starting catcher.
Boston's Terry Francona will manage the AL and Colorado's Clint Hurdle the NL. Each manager chooses his pitching staffs and reserves.

Jason Varitek going to the All Star Game is a crock of shit. It's not like he was voted in.

Jeter doesn't belong, either, but you can't combat the stupidity of fans/voters.

Yeah, seriously. Whining about anything regarding All-Star selections is an exercise in futility. Get over it.

Whining about Varitek in this case is a little more justified, because supposedly "informed" people and experts made the decision, not yahoos with Internet accounts.

Folks, let me explain this to you, as blunt as need be. Part of the "perks" of managing the team is helping pick the team. Guys have been "picking their own" for eons. If you dont like it, have your team win the league, and your manager pick the team. And you know what? He too will pick his own guys.
So fill me in, who should be there in place of Varitek? Name names.

Except it was the players, and not the manager who picked Varitek. Jw

If Giambi gets the final vote in over Dye (who should already be a starter) it's a crime.

Well, as John said, blame the players.
Giambi has a heck of a case for the All-Star game.

"Giambi has a heck of a case for the All-Star game."
Uhhhh, eh...yeah....but Dye? Come on.
Tom, I seem to recall that you and I are in simpatico as Dye-marks. Yes?
This guy is good...and WOW would the Yanks be in a hell of a lot better scenario if we had Dye patrolling right instead of that chubby lazy ass.

Hey, I am certainly on board with Dye. But this last pick is what it is, a goofy fans choice. Who do the fans want to see. As good as Dye is, and as much as Giambi is baked like a cake on here, I would hazard to say Giambi is more well known and liked amongst the mlb fanbase. At the end of the day, the All-Star game is for the fans.

Yeah, I see your point....I guess my point is that Dye shouldn't even be waiting for this final vote silliness....he should start over Manny.

There's no question that the players are at fault here with Varitek. There's no excuse for a .216 hitter being an All Star. He is taking a spot from someone who actually deserves it. This is as dumb as Palmeiro winning a Gold Glove.

Agreed. Granted, Varitek's not taking the place of Bench, Munson or Fisk, but still.

Crow, Groban to sing during the All-Star Game
NEW YORK -- The All-Stars of music are coming to Yankee Stadium, too.
Nine-time Grammy winner Sheryl Crow will sing the national anthem before baseball's All-Star game on Tuesday night, and classical pop star Josh Groban will sing "God Bless America" during the seventh inning stretch.
On Monday night, rock band 3 Doors Down will perform two songs before the home run derby.
Also, as part of All-Star weekend, Major League Baseball is sponsoring a concert in Central Park featuring Bon Jovi on Saturday.

YES is airing a nice treat: the 1977 All-Star Game in Yankee Stadium.
LOL @: those god-awful White Sox collared bowling shirt jerseys that don't tuck in, Pittsburgh's brutal unis, and ALL teams represented except for the Yankees and Dodgers had switched from the button up jersey to the v-neck pullovers.
Some of these mid-season numbers were astounding. Garvey had 22 HRs and a ton of RBIs. Greg Luzinski had 20 something HRs and something like 90 RBIs at the time of the mid-summer classic.

i never knew this until today........
There were two All-Star Games played each season from 1959 to 1962. The second game was added to raise money for the players' pension funds, as well as other causes. The experiment was abandoned on the grounds that having two games watered down the appeal of the event.

I'm already bored with the home run derby. Theres a reason I ignore this year after year. Oh, and fucking David Ortiz sitting down with the National League side, the ass.
Sucks to have the Red Sox enjoying our Yankee clubhouse too, huh? And ESPN had quite the chuckle about Terry Francona hanging out in Girardi's managers office.
9PM and Monday Night Raw cant come quickly enough.

Funny thing, although the whole thing as a whole bores me, I set the DVR to record when I switched over to Raw for one reason....I wanted to see Hamilton. I expected something special. During a commercial I flipped back to the derby and heard them discussing what he did, so I am glad I DVRd it to watch later on.
No doubt, the guy is one Hell of a tale. Considering before I left the derby tonight 4 guys had hit under a total of 20 homers together, this derby needed saving, and he surely did even more than that.

Too bad Hamilton doesn't wear pinstripes. But if that were the case, the Stadium would have been rocking like a WS game. That was some performance. And the funny part was that he choked at the end. But to see a ball smack off the Bank of America sign was incredible.

That was quite a show by Hamilton.
As I sat on the couch, I thought to myself..."after a few years and 7 year 150 million plus contract is signed, this kid is going to look good in pinstripes."
Selfish Yankee Fan...I know...I know.
Funny, I've heard the name Josh Hamilton all year long, but until last night I hadn't put two and two together and realized this is the kid that Bryant Gumbel did a piece on a few years ago while he was still in the midst of his substance issue,.
It is a good story. As someone in recovery myself, I am officially on the Josh Hamilton bandwagon.

Hopefully he's surrounding himself with people that care about him and want him to succeed. He had a rough road and hopefully he sees where he did wrong by himself and his family....
The best is that the Rays let him go, the cubs grabbed him, traded him to cincy who traded him to TX...

Balls you're a near sighted dummy. Do you not understand he was awesome after being drafted, ran into problems, beat them, and is still able to hit a ball, with no heat on it, 514 feet? It's not like some fluke thing, he's a normal fucking guy who u turned and is still able do things you could never do.
A question, are you so dumb you don't think other players have had problems and have come back? Steve Howe? Ass. I want Jeter to get a meth addiction so bad now, see how you act then.
