Ted Williams: Asshole. Headless. Red Sox. Hit for average and power. Great pure hitter. One of the best hitters ever. No Babe Ruth. War Hero. Dead.

I watched the entire Hot Stove program, which really was only 40% or so hot stove stuff, but enjoyed it all. I thought the features were well done, the repartee was good and not forced, and I like the mix of personalities on board. I do, however, think the Jackie Robinson steal of home thing went on a bit long, and was out of place in that it seemed just a chance to show off "Studio 42" and the field.
I am running DVR on the Larsen perfecto for later viewing and put to tape. As an avid fan of the NHL Network and the mix of programming you see (although much of it is on repeat cycle) I see great things ahead.

Freakz, whats the story here? ATT ever going to bring this thing in? And I swear, I never even heard of this TV system you have.
Not to rub it in, but this says it all. I hope you get the network soon -
Fans, critics applaud Network launch
By Barry M. Bloom / MLB.com
MLB Network was launched on Thursday night and the reaction to the first two shows was fast and furious. Fans liked the first 60-minute edition of "Hot Stove" and they loved the digitized kinescope of Don Larsen's perfect game in Game 5 of the 1956 World Series replete with commercials from the original broadcast.
"Round the clock baseball, baby!" blogged thehappyyoungster. "When will I sleep? When will I eat? Will I ever leave the house? OMG!"
"THANKS for getting MLB back on TV," wrote Don Buchholz of Chesapeake, Va. "I was almost going through withdrawal symptoms and you guys start it off with a replay of a classic, Don Larsen's [perfect game] during the '56 Series ... AWESOME. I was in the third grade at the time and didn't make it home soon enough to watch that one or any part of it as it didn't last long enough."
"I loved the opening of the network. Congratulations," wrote blogger gayballfan. "I'm one of those, who remember the "Game of the Week" and couldn't wait to watch. My first World Series as a kid -- Cards vs. Yankees in 1964!"
"This is the best show on TV," wrote another commenter. "Can't wait 'till the season starts to see how you cover the games/highlights. Love seeing the old video and can't wait to see '60's games. Thank you MLB you have made my day."
A number of media outlets, including the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Sports Business Journal, USA Today, Reuters and The Associated Press had heralded the coming of the Network.
Dylan Sharek of Bleacher Report wrote on Thursday night after watching the Yankee right-hander's perfecto against the Brooklyn Dodgers:
"My girlfriend has competition. It's called the MLB Network. I've tried my hardest to learn as much as I can about baseball's past through long and meandering searches ... but nothing can replace watching something in its entirety and experiencing it with your own eyes and ears. Today I watched Mickey Mantle hit a home run in the context of an entire baseball game. It was absolutely one of the most electrifying moments of my life."
Mantle, who won the Triple Crown in the American League as a 24-year-old during the 1956 season, was one of the most electrifying players of his era.
On Oct. 8, 1956, the switch-hitter, battling left-handed, smacked a two-out, fourth-inning homer off Dodgers starter Sal "The Barber" Maglie. In the top of the fifth, he saved Larsen's bacon by sprinting into what was called "Death Valley" -- left-center in the original Yankee Stadium -- to make a one-handed snare of a liner drilled by Brooklyn's Gil Hodges. "Tonight, I saw Hall of Famers in their prime take their hacks just like I watch Albert Pujols and Alex Rodriguez take theirs," Sharek wrote. "I learned that baseball, no matter how much I may hate the economics behind it, has not changed one bit. It is still nine guys going out on the world's most perfectly designed playing field playing the world's most beautiful, intricate game.
"Right now, this channel is showcasing baseball in the way it should be. Simply. Here's to a great 2009 and all the baseball that comes with it."
The fledgling Network was supposed to be available to a potential record audience of 50 million basic cable homes across the nation, but some writers complained that their cable providers were either seeking an additional charge of $10 to $17 to view it or were not making it available at all.
Pete Dougherty, the television critic for the Albany Times-Union, blogged that the debut could not be viewed on Time Warner in that area, although "DirecTV subscribers were able to see the beginning, which consisted of Commissioner Bud Selig introducing the network, followed by a 10-minute collection of clips from baseball's history (too long, if you ask me). 'Hot Stove' followed, and Studio 42 (named in honor of Jackie Robinson) is impressive. Too bad there aren't any games to see it in real action."
Executives of the Network wanted to assure all fans that they were looking into the problems with the intent of quickly solving them. Fans should understand that Comcast Corp., Time Warner, Cox Communications Inc. and DirecTV are one-third partners in the Network with Major League Baseball owning the rest.
Marc Katz of the Dayton Daily News wrote that the Network was certainly available on Time Warner in southwestern Ohio.
"In the middle of the Rose Bowl on Thursday, Jan. 1, Major League Baseball launched its new network by rebroadcasting Don Larsen's perfect 1956 World Series game," he said. "What a perfect way to begin the new year, especially with a game that took only two hours and six minutes to complete. Happy New Year."
Roger Catlin, who is the "TV Eye" for the Hartford Courant, was more to the point about MLB's partnership with the cable providers.
"Its debut Thursday was a historic one -- starting life in over 50 million households," Catlin wrote. "Usually it takes longer to get such a stronghold, especially as fewer channels become available. But MLB is unique because it is a joint partnership between the league and cable companies, who have an instant stake in its success."
The headline on Sharek's Bleacher Report entry seemed to say it all: "MLB Network: The Best $10 I Ever Spent."
"I do not know if MLB Networks will continue to showcase classic footage," he wrote. "But for a $10 upgrade to the premium cable package, I watched something in 2009 that my father hasn't been able to watch in his 50 years as a baseball fan. That alone makes it worth every penny."

If AJ has U-verse, that's AT&T's equivalent of Verizon's FiOS TV. I don't know much about it. FiOS gets lots more press. Anything has to be better than God-forsaken Cablevision, though.

One thing I would love to see on this show is reruns of the Baseball Bunch. That would rock.
Although, the concept of that show, one HOFer, one comedic manager, and the Chicken, and one current MLB player, would definitely still work today.

I think it's almost a given that those shows will surface. What I liked about those shows was that the players weren't playing for charity. They needed the money.
I'm guessing MLBTV has the rights to that, but I do remember the show being on TV awhile back.

Balls, please....this is a serious venture, not Nick at Nite. The Baseball Bunch? Are you fucking kidding me? So far its obvious they are bringing in original programming, this is not a chance to put on a Saturday morning show geared for 8 year olds (which is why you want to see it so bad) Those old home run derby shows have been played to death on ESPN Classics, hundreds of times over. If you missed it then, I surely hope they dont clog the channel with those now. What I am looking forward to is the panel shows comparing the all-time best CFs, the "Cathedral" show on Stadiums from the past and present, things like that. Not the friggin' Baseball Bunch.

I am loving this channel thus far. Today they are, apparently showing the entire 2008 World Series. This thing is great and I am going to waste countless amounts of hours of my life in front of this boob tube, I can tell that for sure.
Yeah really Balls....this channel is meant to be taken seriously.

I have been absolutely enamored with the segments on Hot Stove with the players in studio. Cuddyer and Cameron Maybin were fun watches, I learned a bit, and it certainly humanized them. I have been following Maybin for a while, as he was always highly ranked since draft-day and beforehand. It was funny to watch Cuddyer doing magic.

Loving this channel.
Did anyone catch The Prime 9?
This is a show where they will discuss the top 9 ...fill in the blank.
Last night was Centerfielders.
Top 3 were:
3) The Mick 2) Ty Cobb 1) Willie Mays (well, I fell asleep, but I can only imagine it was Willie)

The Baseball Bunch is absolutely PERFECT for this channel. I don't know if you realize this, but baseball needs to appeal to kids as well as adults. I'm not saying throw on a 5 day marathon of Baseball Bunch, but to show it once a week, on a Saturday morning, or to do a modern day version of the show would be outstanding. It teaches kids the game and gets them to know players throughout the league.
Interesting how the Mick made #3 on that list. I wouldn't think he'd be ahead of DiMaggio.

Baseball does need to appeal to kids.
Do you honestly think a 25 year old show featuring a man in a chicken suit would appeal to today's kids? Do you think any kid today wants to be a ballplayer like Johnny Bench?
Shit, today's youth would look up to Dimitri and Delmon Young more than they'd look up to Bench.
If they want to interest kids with The Baseball Bunch, they'd better remake it and CGI that motherfucker....throw some action packed scenes with some malarky rap music soundtrack.

Do I think that show would appeal to kids? The only drawback to it is that the players who were guests aren't today's stars. But let's say they did the same show, in the same format today. Yes, it would appeal to kids. Absolutely. Everything that was great about that show that appealed to kids back then would work today. Humor is humor.
What was great about it wasn't just the humor, but the actual appearances of various players. It taught me who these guys were, and more important, I actually learned fundamentals from this show. In fact, when I was playing baseball as a kid, the show normally came on before a game. I would watch the show, and try to do what the show said in the game.
So maybe you'd have to start it from scratch, but the idea is still sound. But that said, the original show is historical now, and would show kids baseball in the 1980s, with people from the 1980s in their primes. It would be a kick, like watching the 1950s HR Derby.
The show would definitely have a place on that network.

"It taught me who these guys were, and more important, I actually learned fundamentals from this show."
That says a lot. I learned these things from watching and playing BASEBALL (as opposed to a variety show about baseball).

Um, no shit. Did you not read the part about being on a team and playing the same day? I guess that went over your head. The point, which you didn't get, is that this show was a great example of teaching fundamentals, among other things.

I have to admit, I like this Hot Stove show. It's fast becoming Must See TV for me. I may not agree with every single thing they say, but they make some great points on a lot of things.
They're even starting to sell me on Oliver Perez.
You guys think this show should get its own thread, or just keep it here?
