Read today that Sean Casey has retired, and will be joining the MLB Network as an analyst.
Christ, Im getting old. I remember being a fan of Casey in his rookie season, and throughout, although he never panned to what he promised to be.
He's only 34, but still.

Not enough power for a 1B. Great glove, supposedly great clubhouse guy, but no pop.

Costas joins MLB Network on-air lineup Esteemed broadcaster to host specials, handle play-by-play
Bob Costas, the 19-time Emmy Award-winning broadcaster who has always professed a special love for baseball, has joined the MLB Network's gilded on-air lineup. Costas' addition, effective and influential immediately, was announced Tuesday morning by the Network.
Costas will not delay in impacting the month-old MLB Network: He is scheduled to conduct an hour-long interview later Tuesday with former Yankees manager Joe Torre for broadcast Thursday night.
As part of his multiyear deal, Costas, formerly affiliated with HBO, will make his exclusive cable home on MLB Network.
The host of NBC's recent Super Bowl telecast will host special original MLB Network programming with an emphasis on the game's history and its most significant figures and topics, and serve as the lead play-by-play commentator for a select number of MLB Network's slate of 26 live regular-season games.
Costas will maintain all his current duties at NBC, including his role as host of that network's Olympic and NFL coverage.
Commissioner Bud Selig welcomed Costas into the MLB Network fold as "one of the preeminent sports broadcasters of his generation."
"Bob also cares very deeply about the game of baseball," Selig added. "We're glad to reunite him with the game he loves most and look forward to the exciting television he and MLB Network will create together in the years to come."
Thursday's interview of Torre, whose controversial book, "The Yankee Years," was also released on Tuesday, will not be Costas' debut on the MLB Network. He had been instrumental in the network's Jan. 1 launch with interviews of the battery of Don Larsen and Yogi Berra during a special broadcast of Larsen's perfect game in the 1956 World Series.
"Bob showed us all on Jan. 1 how his presence can truly elevate a broadcast, and we plan to tap into his unique abilities and perspective to build more high-caliber programming in the future," said Tony Petitti, president and chief executive officer of MLB Network. "In addition to the studio show, we're also looking forward to Bob's return to the broadcast booth, where he's been part of so many memorable moments in baseball over the years."
Costas is an eight-time honoree as Sportscaster of the Year by the National Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association.
He is the latest addition to MLB Network's on-air talent, joining Matt Vasgersian, Victor Rojas and Greg Amsinger, studio analysts Sean Casey, Barry Larkin, Al Leiter, Joe Magrane, Dan Plesac, Harold Reynolds and Mitch Williams, reporters Trenni Kusnierek and Hazel Mae and baseball insiders Jon Heyman and Tom Verducci.

Whiles Costas' resume is impressive and his knowledge in beyond reproach....I just can't get over the Jim Lampley like quality of this guy, where he seems to be trying to tell us, the viewers, how much smarter he is than us.

You have to chuckle a bit at the ARod coverage last night. They were literally going on for hours--preempting their programming, like a president got shot.

I REPEAT ... BUCKWHEAT has been SHOT.

Did the Buckwheat shooting skit come out the same time Theisman broke his leg on Monday Night Football?
I'd heard rumors that the way they kept repeating "Buckwheat has been shot" and kept replaying the footage over and over and over was a veiled attempt to lampoon the way ABC overwhelmed viewers with footage of Theisman's leg snapping in half.

No. If I'm right, I believe the Buckwheat sketch was actually a direct response to REAGAN getting shot.

When was Reagan shot? 82?
Eddie Murphy was on SNL by then?

Reagan was shot on March 30, 1981. Need to research a bit when the sketch was.

Balls, you're wrong - the Murphy sketch was a good deal later. No way a direct response, the President being lampooned over a shooting (which put someone in a wheelchair vegetated state, to boot, where it was touch and go for a while) only gets acceptable in due time.
Murphy was on SNL from 81-84 (how hard was that to research - I mean, really now) - I am thinking the sketch was closer to 84 than 81 (also, remember he was already playing Buckwheat for a time in sketches when they had him shot)

You're actually right. I looked it up. I wasn't watching SNL back then, but I had heard it somewhere. The sketch was in 83.
It was a pretty funny sketch though.

If you want to see more vintage Yankee baseball, albeit a loss - you can see the 1982 squad fall prey to Gaylord Perry's 300th win at various times today / tonight on the MLB Net.

For those of you who only watch things Yankees related and therefore would have no idea of this "30 Teams in 30 Days" concept the net is running, the Yankees are up tonight at 8PM. 60 minutes on our team alone, of which I would guess is only 40 minutes of ARod.
I believe its replayed at 6AM tomorrow, then a dozen times in the future, in case you miss it.

30 Clubs in 30 Days would be about 100x better if it 1. Didn't replay theme song every six minutes and 2. didn't involve Hazel Mae looking all decrepit.
That being said, the Batting Stance Guy is my new favorite person.

Hey, leave Hazel Mae alone!
While I did not burn out on MLB Net programming in the least, at one point I had to stop DVRing Hot Stove. I was getting behind, and trying to cram the 50 minutes nightly into our regular television viewing. And, being what it was - a baseball show speculating about baseball to come with nothing really concrete, it was getting to be a bit long in the tooth.
Im looking forward to the regular season kicking up and the live studio coverage - HOWEVER I am probably getting the baseball package, and how will I be into watching studio coverage when I am watching live games from around the land?

I'll take a decrepit Hazel Mae over a ravishing Suzyn Waldman any day.

Suzyn Waldman hasn't been ravishing for about 36 years. That being said, I'd still rather gay her than that stupid Jeanie Zelasko.

You really think that Susyn Waldman was ravishing when she was young? I can't see that. She has a face for radio.

What's Waldman now, sixty? I don't know, she COULD have been attractive at age 20. I'm trying to be nice here! More investigation is needed. Good thing Jeanie knows zero about baseball, because the combo of super knowledge with that manly figure and dude voice might make someone like Tim Lencecum cry.

Anyone else but me notice that this network once billed as America's Game 24 hours a day 365 days a year, has begun filling their late night/early AM programming with a shit load of infomercials?
WTF?
