Already talks that the Rays are in no way willing to retain Carl Crawford at his pricetag.

funny, I was gonna come on here and say that my dream scenario would be Damon & Matsui gone, (both declining arbitration and netting draft picks) and somehow getting Carl Crawford to play left. It's not likely, not at all. But a guy can dream. Tampa can pick up Crawford for $11 mil, a relative bargain. They'll probably pick up the option and shop him, so the only way the yanks get him would be by overwhelming Tampa with prospects. So again, not likely. But if they ever declined his option and made him a free agent......Imagine Gardner batting 9th and Crawford 1st or 2nd.....that would be fun to watch. But just to be clear, i do not expect this to happen. At this point, I'm just a kid leafing thru the Toys R Us flyer picking out Christmas presents for myself

I have heard this tossed around on a few different media outlets, granted it's just hypothetical talk:
Austin Jackson straight up for Carl Crawford and the Yanks roll the dice at re-signing Crawford at the end of 2010.

I would obviously love to keep carl.
I'm happy we've already dealt off Aki. He was a waste of space.

Phillies pick up 2010 option on Cliff Lee...no brainer.

Yeah, they don't get anywhere near the Series without Lee, and he was relatively cheap. I don't think it will happen, and I can already hear the mounting protests, but I'm drooling at the thought of Crawford as a Yankee. He is probably one of my all-time favorite players (non-Yankee, obviously).

good for them. as much as I'd love for him to be a Yankee, it's good for baseball. Hopefully they get something worked out long term.

You people and your Carl Crawford pipe dreams. I pooh-poohed the idea he would be available as soon as ya'll bought it up again.
Some people were even thinking Tampa was going to walk from him. Yeah, that would happen - get nothing in return.
Ok, now that Crawford is unavailable, lets move on to someone else.

It would make zero sense for the Rays to NOT sign Crawford for 2010. And Cliff Lee is possibly the best bargain in baseball. He's tied up for awhile, and by the time he's free, his age won't warrant a CC level contract.

I think Lee is a free agent after this year.

You may be right actually. I thought I read somewhere that he was signed THROUGH 2011. Either way, at least in advance of 2010, he's probably the biggest bargain in baseball of anyone who has been in the league more than 6 years.

Lee is a free agent after next year, so he'll be in pinstripes. Same for Halliday.

Not necessarily. One or both may end up in Boston.

Only if NY already has 4-5 quality starters. Pettitte will be ready to retire, plus we all know Joba belongs in the pen. The only guys that don't sign with NY are the guys NY doesn't want.

I don't think Joba belongs in the pen. Not convinced about that yet. And don't bet on that with guys signing in NY. There are just some people that don't have the ability to play in NY. Not saying either Lee or Halliday fall in that category, but it does happen.
I think Halliday is more likely to be traded, and signed long term by whatever team gets him.
I do think Lee will hit the free agent market, but as great as he has been the last 2 years, it's still a red flag that the guy wasn't all that special in his 20s. That kind of makes one think steroids may be involved. Maybe.

I have always been a Jermaine Dye fan. But now I'm thinking that I'd have been stoked to have him as a Yankee three years ago...now....not so much.
His average has dropped, still has power, but I'm more interested in some young, long-term, athletic solutions to our outfield problem.
Like it or not, World Series or not, our outfield is a mess. Most of our starting outfield would be 4th options elsewhere.

I still don't buy that, beyond Swisher. Defensively, they're pretty good. Assuming they keep Damon, I'd look to upgrade on OFer, obviously Swisher.

Yes he does--defensively. But Gardner and Melky are solid defensively. There's not much out there on the free agent market, so anything major this offseason would have to involve a trade. If not for not wanting to lose that many HRs, I would love for Melky and Gardner to start and Jackson break in as a 4th OFer (unless he wins the job).

Johnny Damon would not start as an outfielder on most teams. Melky and Gardner would CLEARLY be 4th and 5th options on most teams. Gardner just sucks. He's nowhere near the talent of level of scrubs we've had in the past like Shane Spencer, Chad Curtis, Ricky Ledee.
Matsui can't play the outfield at all. Swisher is worthless at the plate and an average fielder at best.
Come on Balls...the Yankees won this WS on pitching and offense generated by it's infielders. The outfield is a wreck. I would be fine with losing every outfielder on this team, unless you keep Damon or Matsui around to DH.

Please name teams that have 3 OFs better than any of the Yankee OFs. And back up with factual evidence rather than bluster.

Chris took the words right out of my keyboard. What teams? Melky put up good numbers. So did Damon. Defensively, Damon and Swisher lacked. I give you that. But much as I dislike Swisher's bat, the Yankee OF produced about 60 HR.

Predictions for this offseason seem to indicated that a lot of free agents are going to get the Benji Molina treatment.
Guys like Carlos Delgado and Jason Giambi might not get jobs at all.

And a lot of arbitration eligible players being traded or non-tendered. Like Hermida (sp?) that the Sox picked up from Florida.

Why SHOULD Giambi get a job? How can you look at the guy's numbers and say he should be in the major leagues?
