We're attending a 9/11 monument dedication tonight at the Wyandanch Fire Department. One of their members, a great guy just a couple of years older than I, was lost that day. Another handful were on the scene, as NYC firemen.
For the most part I will be keeping my thoughts and prayers to myself. Its a somber day to be sure. I am a little removed as I did not go into the city today, and frankly I do not miss it.
I must say a lot of the stuff going on today is being piled on a little high. I heard CNN is playing livetime "as it happened" footage from the day all morning. The sad music in and out of the news channels is punishing. And, of all people, Anthony of the Opie and Anthony radio show said it best, the sadness of 9/11 for many of us came later. But that day it was hidden behind fear in some cases, and ANGER in others. You are not hearing anything about the scumbags who did this today. But you are hearing fear-mongering, from the likes of Chuck Schumer. I caught some by mistake this morning looking for the weather....when told, "well, its good that we have not had a terrorist attack on this soil in 5 years now" he basically said, "so what" by choosing to remind us that "we had not had one in the 5 years BEFORE 9/11 either."
Many of us were in and around the city that day. Many of us have lost friends, and we probably lost someone we know in some fashion. We certainly have people we love terribly affected by this tragedy. I just would like tomorrow to come quickly so we can move onward again. And I would like to see the news and the rest of the media tone it down next year for the 6th anny. We can bring out the piano players on the 10th year anniversary. Trust me, none of us will ever forget the day, and we will always stop to remember 9/11 without the help of the media.

I'm with you on that. My reactions on 9/11 were anger, a concern for people I know, and a desire to give blood if anyone needed.

My first reaction was anger, then my main emotion was shock.
I was shocked that a country as great as ours could have something this bad happen on our own soil. I was stupid & thought we were "ready" for things like this. I guess you can call it a "USA ego". No way in a million years did I think a bunch of camel jockey mother fuckers could come here & do that to us.

I don't think it's all that easy. If it were, it would have been done. Give some credit to the security. We have no idea what they've stopped. But I don't think anyone believes it's all luck and they're just planning another one. They can't report on everything they do, because if they did, the terrorists would simply try something else. Some of their best education comes from CNN. They've kept us safe for 5 years. That's something to be thankful for.
Let's just hope it continues.

For me, this year seems harder than the previous couple. There seems to be so many coincidences with five years ago. Five years ago: Sept. 8, 2001: Al and I went to a wedding Sept. 9th: a 30th surprise party Sept. 10th: I had to take off of work, to nurse my hangover (because of the surprise party the night before) Sept. 11th: Woke up to a beautiful day, JUST like today
This year: Sept. 8th: We had a wedding Sept. 9th: A 40th surprise party (obviously not the same person) Sept. 10th: I was already off of work because it was a Sunday, but I still had to nurse my hangover (because of the surprise party the night before) Sept. 11th: Woke up to a beautiful day, just like 5 years ago

Nice, in a 9/11 memorial thread there's the ever looming danger of another attack. Need that reminder just to make it through the day,
I was in school when it happened, pretty much tucked away from all the other panic and chaos that was happening else where to certain extents. They came over the loud speaker and said one of the twin towers was bombed, the next period, i guess after the second tower fell they found out more info, knew it was terroist and said they crashed the planes into it. Everyone who had relatives working there were allowed to leave and make a call, like anyone would know anything then. My cousin is a LT for the cops and usually is around battery park, but luckily for him he was off that day.Every class then just became discussion classes about thwt had happened and what everyone was feeling, I guess instead of piling kids up in the school shrinks office.
I always make the comparison how this is my generations JFK. Totally different I know, but just how the nation was affected for so long aftet that. Years from now when theres a freedom tower and all the new targets for these assholes, my kids will be asking where were you on 9/11, what happened, blah blah, so on and so forth just like I did about JFK to my grandma. She always said she thought 7 firefighters were alot of casulties when my grandfather died in a roof fire in the 70s in the city, but to see 343 firefighters even struck a chord with me. That's just a small percentage of everyone lost but just firefighters alone, 343.So I'll alwaysd remember that and pretty much 9/11 was the start of WWIII. That said, while it's important not to forget(it sounds so cheap to say just because everyone says it) but I think having memorials and all that shit it's just a constant reminder. Personally I'd rather never forget than always be reminded by people with false sense of being patriotic. It stopped being about a country and turned into a commercial, a real life commercial trying to make a profit out of it. I mean really, who neds or even wants a special edition coin of the twin towers? Is it going to be some big family traditon of being passed down the generations? Is it going to make people feel like they helped in someway? I know a lot of things had money for all of that go to foundations for 9/11 but I mean shirts, beaining bears, coins, it turned into a way to make money and in my eyes cheapened it and took away from all those brave people and 343 firefighters who gave the ultimate. Yeah I see 9/11 on the calendar and it makes me remember, but I'm not going to br the guy who puts his flag at half mass(sp) every year.

Have any of you flown on 9/11?
I went out to NY for an Orioles/Yankees day-night double header on 9/10/02 (they day before they unveiled the 9/11 monument in Monument Park) and flew home on Jet Blue out of JFK on 9/11/02. That flight was the emptiest I'd ever seen an airplane.

Have any of you flown on 9/11? I had flight arrangements for the 12th to go to Florida for meetings and interviews that I had lined up. Didn't get on a plane until the 15th and the flight was packed due to the numerous cancellations that took place over the preceding days. My return flight on the 19th was a third full.

How about not show shit. Why is watching people jump out of windows to their death a nice way of mourning what happened? I'd like it if I saw something I didn't see for two weeks straight 5 years ago. That shit is burned in my brian, I don't need to see it to remember what happened. Well, one more day of this and wednesday it will be back to dog shows and a squirrel waterskiing on the news. Again, it's one thing not to forget but it's another thing to have a constand reminder.
fuck on the radio they had a show on 9/11 for how it affected the gay community. Cause sexulity had somethign to do with it and made you feel differently.

Nice ceremony last night at the firehouse, and brief to boot. Dedicated a monument that stands along the road, which contains a nice plaque and some twisted steel recovered from Tower 1. They had a girl there to sing the National Anthem, the cops were blocking most of the road, a giant flag was on display, and the mother of one of the FDNY victims (who happened to be a Wyandanch volunteer fireman to boot) was on hand to help unveil.
My sister was actually asked to do a prayer reading, which was penned by my Dad who, along with being a fire department chaplain also spent time in a seminary studying to be a priest back in his youth. My Dad is currently on a coast to coast motorcycle journey with my Mom and a couple of others, so my sister did the reading.
I am happy I was able to be there with my family and others from the Fire Department. I am also happy today is 9/12 and we can begin to move on again.

"I am happy I was able to be there with my family and others from the Fire Department. I am also happy today is 9/12 and we can begin to move on again. "
I'm trying to be as sensitive as possible here but why was it impossible to not move one yesterday? To me, yesterday, normal day as any other. Yeah sure something terrible happened 5 years prior but to me making an entire day to RELIVE what happened it fucking stupid. And it doesn't do shit to hohnor anyone, just antother way to get a false pride in ones country. Where the fuck were the american flags on 4th of July? WEhy not hand out flowers and flags on march 18th? That's a day I'll never forget, its the day I took a 45 minute shit and at the end the bowl looked like the WTC, I must never forget that day.
Tom, it's nice to went to a ceremony at all, but yesterday was not a day to just stop your life and relie a day that no one should forget but no one wants to fo through again., 9/11 makes me fucking sick. Next year I'm wearing a Saddam Heusein shirt all fucking day. And a sign that ays honk if you love Osama. I'm gonna put a banner in my yard that ha a picture of a zombie jesus and fly communstic russias flags. No one cares about this country untill 9/11 happend and no one will agsin till next year. I wonder if they'll have a big ceremony for the 6 yar anniversary, that's what the dead would want. Here the thing, no one outsdie New York gives a fucking shit. Their lives were exactly the same., Yhey heard the shit that happened 5 years ago but their day went on just fine. And has ever since, even on the anniversary. NY should fucking take a note and learn something, it's not important to go through what happened 5 years ago. It's the same reason no one cared really about the Tsunami or Katrina, it wasn't here so who cares? Well a quater a million people is way more than 3 fucking thousand, probably grumpy new yorkers. Where's the day of remembereance for them? Oh that's right, it isn't NY so no one fucking cares.
I'll end this whole shit with a few lines from RATM: "Land of the free? Whoever told you that is your enemy" and "....if it ever coems close to rage built up inside of me, fist in the air in the land of hypocricy".
And:Yes I know my enemies Theyre the teachers who taught me to fight me Compromise, conformity, assimilation, submission Ignorance, hypocrisy, brutality, the elite All of which are american dreams
All of which are american dreams All of which are american dreams All of which are american dreams

Hey Cactus,
Why don't you go back to your usual seat of swinging from Tom's nutcheese?
A zit faced punk ass pussbag like yourself should shut the fuck up about issues such as this. You were still picking your nose & eating it when this happened. You had just got cut from your Little League team. Nobody gives a fuck what you have to say on this issue. Go back to jumping your skateboard & downloading porn off your moms laptop & leave the real issues to people that have lived.

James, you're a tard. I did not WANT to "move on" yesterday. This is the first 9/11 "tribute" i have attended since the weeks after 9/11. It IS removed from my life. But to take time yesterday during the 5th anniversary and remember those that were lost, including a fellow fireman and friend of mine, was nothing off-kilter. But, as I said in my original thread, most of what I thought over the course of the day was my own. I did not come on here with a speech. I did what you are trying to do, and said what I wanted to say.
Sometimes its sad to see how miserable you are. We all have our problems with how 9/11 was covered and people were basically beaten over the head with it.
But to tell me I should not have wanted to do what I did yesterday is total ignorance, and I would appreciate it if you think before you attack someone for showing sensitivy to such matters.
