Yesterday was my daughter's 9th birthday party.
One of the gifts she received, from me, was a Swiss Army Gear 4-man camping tent.
She and roughed it, camped out in the wilderness last night. Of course that wilderness was my Huntington Beach backyard, but we camped nonetheless.

Yesterday, in the car, out of the blue, my 3 year old boy busts out in a chorus of "......Has he lost his mind. Da na na na na na na naaa naaaa na!"
(to the tune of Sabbaths' Iron Man)
I was proud.
I did have to inform him that War Pigs is a superior song though/

I guess he has to wait until at least age four before delving into Bad Religion.

An AC / DC Brian Johnson tune kicked up a few weeks ago, and Emma was all into it...until he started singing. She didnt like how he sounded, so she immediatly wrote off the song.

Yeah, he'll have get some schooling under his belt before he can understand Graffin's big words. The Vandals made a hilarious song, poking fun at Graffin's verbosity, calling it Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious - played to the tune of BR's "How Could Hell Be Any Worse" www.youtube.com/watch?v=deNFRLnq9WE

Emma, who used to want to be a marine biologist, and later a zookeeper, just informed me she has a new ambition. She now wants to be a tattoo artist. I'm kind of glad she waited until after they announced what all the kids want to be when they grow up at her preschool graduation to decide that.

Conversation with our daughter.....
One of us - "Emma, behave."
Emma - "I am being have."
So check it out, we're crazy proud of the girl. We were at Splish Splash water park today. For a grump, I sure handled a bunch of long lines well. Anyway, we go on this slide thats recommended for those just about Emmas size and up. Catch is, you must go alone.
I think its sorta rinky-dink. Shes not the only kid on line either. So we get to the top, and I am having reservations. People seem to be zipping out this first turn. To make matters better, they tell Emma to lose the lifejacket. After prep is made for a lifeguard to meet her in the pool at the bottom, she is set to go.
I went down first, so she could run concurrently with Mom, albeit in a seperate tube. As I am heading down I am like, oh crap. This thing was crazy fast, legs kicking in the air, sharp turns, water jetting everywhere. Emmas 5, with little experience in such matters.
I slam into the pool at the bottom, and immediatly turn to her tube, worried she will come out howling and crying, like a normal kid her age would be justified to do. I am told to exit stage left, they have a guy prepared for her. She shoots out of the tube, crashes like one of those speedboats you see on ESPN-2 that flip over in crazy fashion, and comes up after a moment with help from the lifeguard.
And she is gushing and happy. Insisting she was never scared, although Dana swears she heard SOMEONE howling, "Mommy, Mommy!" at some point.
Lets just say this, that slide was crazy, and the though that my daughter was zipping through, and thinking of what must have been in her mind then...wow. Unlike us, she had no idea when it would end, or how. I give her lots of credit.

Ah, the innocent days of wonder. We're in the car yesterday and Emma is gazing at the puffy clouds, and she ruminates, "I bet that clouds taste like cotton candy."
We sorta agree, and she says, "one day, if we take a plane, and the top if off cause its a hot day, we can reach up and take some of the cloud and eat it."
Sounds good!
A plane with no roof, cause its hot out. Love her!

When I was young, I used to think the beach was in the clouds...so when we were driving to the beach, I would look up at the clouds and think that was our ultimate destination.

I don't have my own kid, but I'd like to share a story about my 2-year old niece.
We took a walk down to a little park on the corner, she saw two Asian kids playing by the swings, and went running over to them, and says, "Ni hao!" - which is "hi" in Chinese. I have NO idea where she got that from. At first I thought my mom had taught her the word, since she had just been in China. But, then I was wondering how she knew to go up to the only two Asian kids in the park. Is there a Chinese equivalent for Dora the Explorer?

So Emma comes running out of her room last night, an hour after she was put in to go to sleep, all excited. Seems now she is convinced that Spongebob is "real."
See, what happened is she was looking at a book in her already extensive collection, and it was an account of "My Time In Atlantis." Your author was "Spongebob." So, cause the book cover says, "by Spongebob Squarepants" he must be real. Cause he wrote a book.
She went to bed happy.

She might. She hasn't even taken mom and dad yet. Not that mom cares much because fish are creepy. She went with Aunt Dawn and Uncle Adam. They are cool because they have a boat and a dog.

I took my 4 year old son "potty" in a public restroom this weekend, and as he finished up said, "Daddy, when I'm done peeing, my head shakes."
As a man, and as many of you are men on this message board, you know EXACTLY what he meant.

What Emma did today is hop the bus for her first day of Kindergarten. When we pick her up at the bus at around 4, we are handing her Miley Cyrus' newest CD, and heading out to a family meal at Famous Dave's Barbecue.
So Im out - you kids behave.

My kid lost her Minnie Mouse lunch box on her first day of school. With half a bologna sandwich in it.
Also, when asked by Grandma Brown what she did in school today she said "I don't remember, but I had fun."
Then, after I tucked her in she came out of her room to tell me that her music teacher has a "stupid rule." So I asked what it was and she said "No smiling." I said she probably misunderstood but she insisted that there is no smiling allowed in music class. I told her to rest assured that on meet the teacher night next Tuesday I will be questioning this policy.
