The last visual evidence of the Minnie Mouse lunchbox. Such a sad tale. That's a phat lunchbox.

My daughter is not sleeping lately. We put her down in the crib, and she curls up like she's going to go down, but by the time that I hith the top step, she is screaming and crying. The only way that I can get her to sleep is if my wife or I lay down with her in our bed and wait for her to fall asleep. This has been going on for a solid week. I'm thinking that she is getting the rest of her teeth, but the last time she was cutting teeth, they came in in two days.

Th lunch box has returned home.
And the shoes are actually Ralph Lauren Polo and they do indeed kick ass. I LOVE them and wish I had a pair. She was reluctant to wear them and said they were "silly looking" until I convinced her they were cool. She has gotten many compliments on them proving that once again, mom was right.

Kids need to know what's cool and it's up to us cool parents to school them!

I do give her credit for picking out the shorts though. The shirt was all me.
Oh, and the "phat lunchbox" was Emma's pick too.

Yesterday, while hanging out at the frozen yogurt place with some colleagues and their families, my 4-year old son asked aloud, "Daddy, what day is tomorrow."
One friend of mine just sighed with envy...."MAN....life must be nice!"

Every now and then Em likes to buy lunch at school. Only once or twice a week at most depending on what is on the menu. Lunch costs 1.40 and includes an "entree," choice of a veggie or soup, choice of fruit and either milk or juice. Snacks are extra so I usually toss about 2.50 to 3.00 in Emma's bag.
I have noticed that she never brings home any change. I finally asked my mom about it and it turns at that Em has been pocketing the difference. She has been dumping the change into a piggy bank that my mother takes every month or so to the bank to dump it in the coin machine to convert to dollars that Emma then uses to buy herself a toy.
So Emma is embezzling and my mother is an accessory.
I am going to look into purchasing a prepaid lunch card for her and put a stop to what Obama would call "this orgy of spending."

Way to punish her for learning how to save!!! That is one very mature 5-year-old, who can forgo extra cookies and instant gratification, in order to save for something she actually wants to buy for herself.

One of the important rules to saving is save your OWN money, not someone elses.

I don't know... if she was not specifically instructed to bring home change, she has a case that the money actually is hers... it was given to her...
When I find $50 in Dave's pants because he did not empty his pockets and was too lazy to pick up his laundry and wash it himself... I consider that found money. I also scoop the change up off of the floor and keep it in a jug, which is periodically dumped in my bank account, and I keep the proceeds of any recycling that I take back to the supermarket every few months.

I am going to have to side with Em on this. Unless she was specifically told to bring change home, you have to give her kudos for saving.

I am not punishing her for saving. She was told multiple times that I was putting extra in so that she had money for a snack the next day so that I don't have to put money in there every night. It is much easier for me to put a few dollars in there than it is to look for exact change all the time.
I also kept asking her where the change went and she said "I gave it to Grandma" but left out the part about putting it in her piggy bank. Emma doesn't save. Emma spends. And she does not forgo anything.
I give her enough to buy a snack in the cafeteria and she gets a snack in the classroom. When the change that was for her snack the next day is gone, I have to replace it.
She is getting a meal card.

My son was quite a collection of various action-figures: Star Wars, Kung Fu Panda, Ultra Man, Spider Man, Iron Man, Transformers....and he has one (handed down from me) Gene Simmons figure, complete with cape and battle-axe bass guitar. My son has no clue who Gene Simmons is. I have noticed through casual observations of the frequent action figure battles which my son stages, Gene is the perpetual victim. Gene is ALWAYS made to get his ass kicked by anyone from Iron Man to the stupid girl mountain lion character from Kung Fu panda. It's not so bothersome that I feel I should intervene, however if we were talking about Ace Frehley, he and I would have to have a conversation!

The thing is, if you're staying in character, Ace is the only member of KISS who could get his ass kicked and not realize it.

My son is 4. He goes to a day care school at a Lutheran church.
Neither me nor my ex-wife are Lutheran....it was just a cost-effective, clean, safe, wholesome day-care solution.
This weekend, as my son and I were watching a Rankin and Bass Christmas classic (Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer...narrated by Burl Ives) I asked my son if he knew what Christmas was about.
He replied...."Ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmm....JESUS?"
Ummmmmmmmmm Jesus, indeed!

On the other hand, my sister Jackie's daughter went to a Jewish day care program for the same reasons, and for a while was pretty steeped in the Chanakah (sp) tradition. She could belt out all the tunes, and tell you all the reasons for this and that tradition.

So Emma just ambles over and goes, "Im lucky...my birthday is the day before Valentines Day." So I ask her what she is going to do when she has a boyfriend and she makes this shy grin and goes, "my Goodness...." About a minute later she stops eating waffles long enough to go, "I might not even get a boyfriend....Ill just get a husband." She is going to Mom's bank today for an appearance by Santa Claus and Sparky the Dragon. Oh, and Kim from my second favorite morning show behind Coop and Tobin, Jim and Kim on K-Joy.

This morning, while driving my kids to school we were listening to the Oh Brother Where Art Thou soundtrack. There's a funny little bluegrass ditty on there called "The Big Rock Candy Mountains" and in one verse they use the word "Hobo."
My daughter chuckled at the word.
I asked her if she knew what a HOBO was?
She answered, "People who can't afford cable."

So in Dana's haste to post news about the cat, she forgot to mention Emma's apparent bowling prowess.
Emma had a kids birthday party today, at a bowling alley around the way. Her first time bowling. Her first rolls were clumsy enough that Dana texted me from the party that things were looking down for Emma, and a little boy was already giving her pointers. Well, those pointers either worked, or she beared down on her own, as only minutes later I was texted again with "Emma's kicking ass!"
Folks, heres the bottom line. In a game against 4 others, she rolled a 120 to take the day...the nearest to her, in 2nd? A 69!
There was another grouping of 5, where a kid scored over a 100, I believe, but Emma still topped him with her 120.
I mean, holy crap!

I dont think, outside of Wii, I could bowl a 120.
You said 69.

Edit....it was 102, not 120. Proud Daddy remembered it wrong. She still won the day, second place in her game was still (giggle) 69, and the top score in the other game was a 93. She wasnt bowling through the legs either, although there are snails that apparently slither faster than her bowling ball did down the lane.
She had a chance for a crazy finale, and a much higher score. She started her last frame with a strike, but instead of picking up on it plunked a TWO on her next roll.

So....what my daughter did was be privvy to a sleepover here at our place that was totally out of control. I would say most in the house averaged just under 4 hours of sleep. There were ghost tales that went awry, fighting, distractions surrounding the cat, games and toys broken, spilled, and tossed about, soda and sugar highs, and a general aversion to go to sleep.
These girls left chaos in their wake, I am shocked and appalled.

Well, I will put this way. While the chances of ANY slumber parties going on here are quite slim, the chances of a slumber party featuring both my sisters daughters AND Dana's sisters daughter at the same time are ABSOLUTELY ZERO.
This cross-mix did not work at all.

My son drew a picture of me for Valentine's Day.
He colored my mouth in black, and he went out of his way to point out to me, several times, that he made my mouth black.
I'm not sure how to interpret that.
