Yeah, it was totally Murphy's fault you lost the game, even though Johnson had a no hit for half of it...
what a bunch of bums.

He has an outside shot. He once played for the Dodgers, and the purpose of that ballpark seems to be to honor all things Dodgers.

The Mets should change their name to the Brooklyn Dodgerwannabes.

They really are idiots. They make it sound like Gooden pulled out a can of Krylon and put his piece on an entire wall.

Listening to a Sheffield interview right now.
One thing I can say for sure that Sheff has accomplished. He has thoroughly intimidated the media, at least to his face. Every single question I've ever heard a reporter ask Sheff in person has been worded as to stroke his ego.
Of course, then when they get out of his presence, they lambaste the guy.

ever think you'd hear a manager say he prefers his players not hustle?
"It's like the harder he (Jose Reyes) runs, the more trouble he gets in," Manuel said. "I think he did the right thing. He thought he hit a little better than where it landed, but there's nothing else he can get out of that."
Mike Francesa has been interesting today

A few days ago, the Mets did throwback jerseys. They threw back to the GIANTS. What the fuck?
This team isn't exactly new. They have almost 50 years of history--nearly as much as Brooklyn and the Giants had when THEY were here.
And they have to suck off another franchise for their throwback jerseys? Are you kidding me?
Worse, they were PLAYING the Giants that day.
Reason #41289501 why I hate the Mets.

LOL@Sheffield's antics. Way to demand a contract extension or threaten to leave the team.

I think the Mets are bidding against themselves with Bay. Sounds like he's holding out for a 5th year, but no one has even approached the Mets' offer in a FOUR year deal.

Is it me, or is this signing of Jason Bay going way under the radar?
Maybe it was because he signed when I was away. From what I'm seeing, it's a 4 year deal at $66 million, but in reality, it's $69 million, because there is a $3 million buyout if a 5th year vesting option doesn't kick in.
Thing is--what has to happen for that option to kick in?
I think Bay is a good player, but not an elite one. He did very well at Fenway, but Shitty Field is not hitter friendly. His defense is suspect, and he's in his 30s, so by the end of this contract, the Mets could have a piece of shit. This is the type of player I wish on teams I hate--highly touted, extremely expensive, requires a long term deal, and overrated.

I definitely think they overpaid. Part of it is that they're getting a lot of shit (deservedly so) from their season-ticket holders. My friend is part of a group that controls four tickets in the third row (not as pricey as the Legends Suite, but a pretty penny), and he basically told the sales rep (before the Bay signing), "You guys aren't spending any money, so why should we?" And the guy sighed and said, "We've been hearing that a lot."

Did the Mets raise the prices? I know the Yankees dropped a lot of the prices in the big sections.

Bay gets his $17M in 2014 if he gets 600 ABs in 2013...OR....gets 500 ABs in 2012 AND 2013

Watching Bay every day...I have to say that I like him. He shuts his trap, plays hard and seems to be that elusive "clutch" type guy.
I'm glad the Sox let him go however. You don't pay Jason Bay $80M...period.
Mike Cameron sucks, but if you compare their numbers - the Sox are saving $60M and losing out on about 10-15 HRs and 40 RBI's or so (just guessing).

The Mutt fans pretty much bullied the Mets into getting the Bay deal done. The Mets seemed to be wavering but the fans are in a froth.
I loved Jason Bay. Had to learn to hate him when he put on the Boston cap, and that continues. I wish him harm. That said, hes a good player. Worth that money? Hell freakin no. Some projections are seeing him averaging 20 jacks and a .270 average for the Mets. For that money?

I think he is a nice player who they overpaid for and his contract will be an albatross in 2-3 years. And it was quiet because nobody cares about the Mets and they are still 2 starters and a bullpen short. At least.

The Mets lowered a lot of prices, too, but a lot of people aren't renewing because of how bad the team is. That place was emptier in August and September than the Bronx was at that stage of the season in 1990.

Bay reminds me a little of JD Drew (though Bay of course is better). Drew put up some nice numbers, but I never understood the money he got.
I saw a stat the other day comparing JD Drew, who makes about $14 million, v. Stephen Drew, who makes like $1.5 million.
The numbers were over a 4 year period. JD batted maybe 9 points higher, had less than 10 more HR, and the RBI total was comparable, as in within 10-20.
Startlingly similar numbers.
Yet look at the difference in salary.

Bay got the money because he performed well in a big market.
Drew is a one of kind player (thank god). The guy is capable of being the best player on the field, but you look at his numbers and they are average. He does nothing amazing, but does nothing horrible either. His on base percentage is always up there, but you don't get paid $14M to take walks non stop.

Drew is also a better outfielder. Much better actually.

Unless you're Jason Giambi--and it's $20 million. I don't get it--I understand the concept of OBP being a very important stat, but I don't think average should be ignored. Is a guy who hits .280/.400 OBP more valuable than a guy who hits .300/.320 OBP? Of course, but a guy who hits .220 with a .350 OBP is likely very overrated. Throw the guy strikes, and he's usually toast.
Ultimately, yes, OBP and SLG separates the two brothers but is it a $12.5 million difference? Is 70 points of OBP (which comes with a significant risk of injury) a stat that makes JD 9 times better than Stephen?
Of course, it's not like you would ever choose between the two since they don't bat in the same spot in the lineup. Is JD better? Yes. But THAT much better?
Got the numbers. From 2007-09:
RBI:-- JD had 196, Stephen 192 HR: JD had 54, Stephen had 45 AVG: JD hit .276, Stephen hit .264 Hits: JD had 355, Stephen had 446 AB: JD had 1286, Stephen had 1687

Balls, I think you severely undervalue walks and on base percentage. The point of a batter in the batter's box is to not make outs. If you get out, you can't score a run and if you don't score, you can't win. Many analysts believe that OPS isn't the best single stat for a quick evaluation (although far superior to batting average) but rather you should double OBP and add it to slugging as getting on base is that much more important.
I won't defend Giambi as a $20mil player at the end of his contract. In fact, most pundits said at the time he signed that it would be bad at the end. (This is true of most long term contracts, especially when they are signed by players in their 30s).
But most advanced metrics of player value indicate that Drew's "value" is approximately the $14 mil that he makes.
