In the end though, it's not just a matter of cold v. hot. The entire National League stinks. There are only 4 playoff teams because they need four to fill out the schedule. The Mets may not be a great team, but they are MUCH better than the other 3 teams. It's true that even the worst team in baseball can win games against the best, but the Mets really are that much better than the 3 other NL losers that it really should be a cakewalk.
The Mets would have to go ice cold and another team would have to heat up fast to knock the Mets out. It would be a tremendous upset.
Records DO mean something. They show that over 162 games, the Mets were MUCH better than the average teams they are playing against.
Shit happens, but the Mets are still the best team in the NL by FAR, and if they don't make the WS, it will be a tremendous upset.

I agree that the Mets are the best team in the NL, but I wouldn't write the other teams off.
The NL Central was terrible, and the Twins, Tigers, and White sox feasted on them. And as mediocre as some NL teams seem, the AL had TWO 100 game losers, as well as a few other big time stinkers. So it;s not like the AL was 100% better top to bottom. So, the AL might not be as good as their records indicate.

The only reason you can't write the other teams off is because they got there due to circumstances requiring 3 other teams. Bad teams can beat good teams, so on that basis, they theoretically have a chance.
That doesn't change that the odds are overwhelmingly in favor of the Mets. There have never seen so many lousy teams in the playoffs--especially all in one league.
The AL had some shit teams no doubt, but even those shit teams managed to kick the shit out of the NL.
BOTH the 100 game losers in the AL played over .500 ball against the NL. So yes, you CAN argue that the AL was better top to bottom.

And Oakland went 8-10 in interleague play. The Yankees only went 10-8 vs. the NL East. The AL was indeed better, but that doesn't mean one of the NL teams can't catch fire and win the World Series.

That doesn't matter. The AL still dominated the NL overall, and over the course of a season, any of the AL playoff games would have won well over 100 games against those .500 and below teams. There has never been a year, at least that I know of, where there was a great disparity between leagues, and when there was only ONE decent team in a particular league.

It will mean that the Mets choked to an inferior team if they don't get to the WS.

It would, but the Mets and Yanks are very similar. We both have potent line ups but shakey starting pitching. If EITHER of us lose it will look bad.

It's different with the Yankees. The four American League playoff teams are ALL very good and worthy of BEING playoff teams. The 3 NL teams the Mets are facing are at best, average and not worthy of postseason play.

And a wonderful day just got better! Grrrr.
Fuckin' fucktard Mets. I'd like to see the Padres wave the NL banner, but if the Cards come out of that side of things, you will never see a bigger Cardinal fan than me. Get the Mets the Hell out of here.

All of Jason Kendall's former managers are on the Tigers coaching staff.
Leyland was his first manager in baseball. Kendall will have all of his major-league managers -- including Tigers coaches Gene Lamont and Lloyd McClendon, and A's manager Ken Macha -- on the field for this series.

Some mild surprise from many of the pundits that the Tigers are turning to Nathanial Robertson tonight, rather than Kenneth Rogers. Rogers is a ridiculous 25-4 pitching in that Oakland ballpark, including an astounding 23-1 record since 1995.
But James Leyland wants to give him the extra rest, as the Yankee game was undeniably "draining" for him. Also, if this does go to a game 7, Rogers would be the guy the Tigers would be calling upon for that game 7.....there in Oakland.

I think it's a decent move. Give a guy with some good rest the ball and get Rogers some more rest.
This should be a solid series.

I know it's equivalent to locking the barn door after the horse escapes, but the fact that Robertson was able to save his bullpen two more innings in game one versus the Yanks impressed me.
Of course, he DID let up five runs in the third, which I'm not minimizing, but I think the fact that the Tigers didn't have to go to their pen until the fifth was huge.

Just like the Yankees were going to automatically pocket the game Kenny Rogers pitched, huh?

I think Weaver is going to get beat up. Not because it's Weaver, but becuase the Mets lineup is nasty.

Kenny Rogers pitched a fluke game of his life. But I never said that the Yanks would pocket that game. Randy Johnson was on the mound and he is just as bad these days.
But Jeff Weaver is going to get shelled because he sucks. Any playoff level team should crush him. The Mets are the only playoff level team in the NL.
83 wins for the Cards and they're in the NLCS. What a disgrace. The Mets should take them out in 4 and if they don't, they suck.

I know, I'm not disputing that, I'm just saying the Mets would take care of decent pitching also.
Keep in mind that the injury bug hit both teams. If Mulder and Martinez were healthy most of the year I'm sure the Cards would be a 90 win team and the Mets would be 100+.

I'm not one to defend the Cardinals but they also lost their closer for the season, Edmonds has been banged up with post-concussion syndrome, and Rolen has had a bum shoulder for a good chunk of the year.
That said I think the Mets pitching will come down to earth a bit, and St.Louis will at least take a few games from the series. Jw

Injuries make teams worse. Bottom line though is that they only won 83 games. It's pathetic.

The Yankees got lucky that year. But at least they beat good teams to get there. The Mets are playing .500 teams. It's pathetic
