Mac--your team got swept by a very tough opponent, and obviously not much you can do but tip your hat, but I'm still interested in your reaction to all of this, especially the Papelbon meltdown.

That loss really didn't "hurt" as much as they usually do. LA was clearly the better team and proved it. I did think Boston had a shot, based on LA's weak bullpen (which I think NY will expose) and the Boston ownership of LA in past years.
As far as who I'm fucking pissed at:
Ortiz: This fat steroid abuser showed again that he was all needles, no skill. Why the FUCK he was hitting int he 5 hole is beyond me.
Papelbon: He's a punk no doubt, but he's been money for "us". His BS finally caught up with him. I don't mind a guy getting hit, but it's the little things he did that really pissed me off. Such as throwing Vladdy a STRIKE on the first pitch. Everyone in the free world know that Vladdy would have swung at ANY pitch in that situation, so you groove a fastball? WTF
Theo: I'll say it again. He's overrated as fuck. Way to pay Lugo 9MM to play backup 2nd for the Cards. Now he says he's bringing Wakefield back for 2010? Are you fucking serious?
Francona: I'm not ready to throw him under the bus yet, but his easy going shit is wearing on me. His "always have the players back" mr. positive shit is getting old. Hitting Ortiz 5th?
p.s. I HATE Torii Hunter. He plays the "I'm black & I'm hardcore Compton" card. Chest pumping, hip hip, monkey boy. I was hoping someone put on in his ear.

Here's the thing, Mac.
Is Boston an inferior team, compared to that of the remaining AL teams? No...not really.
That's what is difficult if you're Theo. Aside from catcher and shortstop, which are at least serviceable as is, do you have any glaring weaknesses that have to be addressed? I don't see it.
Where do you go from here if you're Theo? You like your pitching, you like your bullpen for the most part...you love your outfield.
Aside from unloading Lowell and MAYBE Ortiz...there's not much to tinker with.
I think this loss was more a function of a bad run than an inferior lineup.

Funny you should say that. You know if you replace "Ortiz" with "Giambi," I get exactly where you are coming from. I didn't understand why they stuck a fat steroid abuser in the middle of the Yankee lineup last year.
Everyone blows a save, and his turn came at a really shitty time. It happens. But what I don't get is why they walked the bases loaded when they already had 2 outs. Even if a hitter has a .500 average against Papelbon, there's a 50 percent chance he will get out. The idea of walking someone to pitch to Vlad makes no sense--when there are 2 outs.
That's obviously more of a Francona thing, but I don't get that one. I heard his explanation that Vlad didn't do well against Papelbon, but there were 2 outs.
I would never have picked a Boston getting swept. I actually didn't want that because I wanted the two teams to fight it out better.
This is going to be a tough LCS for both teams.

I agree that the team really has no weakness other than SS and a couple bench guys here & there. They don't need to get rid of Ortiz AND Lowell. They need to get rid of one of them. Lowell would do well in a 80 game season at 3rd and the rest at DH. However, Ortiz is clogging up the DH spot with his 1-12 bat.
Bay is a Free Agent, so who knows there. Especially with NY with an open LF slot. I really have grown tired of the free agent game. I wouldn't even mind if they gave Reddick (young OF) a shot. I also wouldn't mind if they gave Tejada a shot at SS. Why the hell not? They need another bat.
I thought that walking Hunter was the right move, to be honest. Hunter, that piece of shit - has a hot bat. Vladdy's bat had been looking slow & he was swinging at everything. I can't fault Francona for that move, but I blame Papelbon for tossing a free swinger a meatball on the first pitch.

They also don't have the power they used to have with Manny gone and Ortiz off the juice. Their lineup is built for Fenway and they struggle on the road. Their OF defense is weak- again especially outside Fenway. Lowell isn't what he was at third due to the hip injury. They need a young power hitting corner outfielder to replace either Bay or Drew who can play defense. Or what they needed is Tex, play Youklis at 3rd, and either DH Lowell or trade him.

All I know is I'm glad the Yanks signed who they signed last offseason. This offseason doesn't look all that good for free agents. Not interested in Bay at all. They may be forced to try to resign Damon, but that would likely require 2 years, which blows.

I think the Yanks can get him for one year just pay a little more rather than committing to 2 years. Not a big market for an older corner OF with limited power and no arm. And I don't see him going to a shitty team.

Walking Hunter MAY have been the right thing to do, but Vlad is ALWAYS dangerous because he is such a good BAD BALL hitter. That move puzzled me at the time. But yeah.....you have a guy in a slump of sorts, who is notorious for chasing outside the strike zone at any time....and you throw him a strike? ?? WTF?

So Dustin Pedroia has "offered" to play short.
Not sure if he CAN play short, but if he can, the Sox might want to consider picking up the O-Dogg!

He's paying Boston $15.5 million to play for them? If I had to pick one team to pick up Cameron, it would be the Red Sox.

While I'm not sure why everyone thinks Cameron is good (he's not), I'm glad they didnt' shower Bay or Holliday with a $100M contract. I'm happy with the drop off of Camerons bat (200000K's) if they "only" have to pay him $8M for two years. He's a better OF and has better speed (if he gets on base) than the others.
I'm glad they signed Lackey, but $17M per season? For real? They must be ready to let Beckett go and know DiceK will be gone. If I'm Beckett, I'm demanding that type of contract for myself like NOW.

Is Dice K's contract up after this year? I thought there were a few more years left on it. And I don't know if future years would play a factor in the Lackey deal, when Cliff Lee is clearly going to be available after the 2010 season. Lackey does improve their rotation though, and I've heard Buchholz may actually be a chip in a trade for Adrian Gonzalez.
For all that speed Cameron has, he stole just 7 bases last year, and Bay stole 13. Go figure.
Ultimately though the drop off between Bay (who I think is overrated) and Cameron isn't THAT bad, and considering the difference between the salaries, the Red Sox did fine. And I can't stand Cameron. Bay was a Yankee killer though. Hard to say if that will be the same with Cameron. Ultimately, when Cameron is up, I have a lot more confidence in getting an out.
The problem with Lackey over the past 2 years has been durability, and heading into his 30s, that could be a bigger problem. The Yankees have hit him well in the past.

DiceK has two more years left, but he's reasonable at 12M per year assuming he wakes the fuck up. I heard Lee wants a CC type contract and the Sox won't go that high (I don't think). Felix Hernandez is also a free agent next year, so the Mariners better do well in 2010. Imagine the contract Felix will command? I don't see any way he DOESN'T end up in NY. He's sitll in his mid 20's.
I also think there is a big move for Boston upcoming. Sounds like Buckholz is expendable now.

I still say you really can't call it $12 million a year when factoring the posting fee. I thought Felix Hernandez had more than 1 year left before free agency, but assuming he performs the same, I think he will command a killer contract, and based on market value, it will be justifiable. I also think that more than just the Yankees will go for it.
The problem with Lee was that he was such a late bloomer that a CC contract won't be possible due to his age. He'll be lucky to get a Lackey contract, or more realistically, a Halladay contract. He may get CC dollars, but not CC years.

David Ortiz had his back turned and his head down when reporters approached last night. He said he wasn’t talking.
But a question about his 0-for-7 start got under his skin and he couldn’t help himself.
“(Expletive) happens. Then you guys talk (expletive),” Ortiz muttered with a mixture of dismay and defiance, his voice occasionally rising. “Two (expletive) games already. (Expletive) are going crazy. What’s up with that, man? (Expletive). There’s (expletive) 160 games left. Y’all (expletive) go ahead and hit for me.”
Ortiz wanted to highlight the absurdity of the question. Is the longtime linchpin really going to be benched after two games? But his response betrayed his sensitivity to a topic that won’t disappear until he starts swinging like the Ortiz of old.

LOL @ Theo Epstein going "undercover" to see Pearl Jam at the TD Garden Center, and causing a firestorm in Boston over it. Papers ripped him for not traveling with the club for the game with the Yankees in NY, but the funny part is him showing up at the show with a Bobby Valentine inspired fake-mustache, fake mullet wig, glasses, a blue hat, and a hooded sweatshirt.
