Source: By PETER ABRAHAM THE JOURNAL NEWS
(Original publication: October 29, 2007) The Los Angeles Dodgers have decided to fire manager Grady Little and replace him with former Yankees manager Joe Torre, The Journal News has learned.
Torre, 67, could be named manager as soon as tomorrow, according to two sources close to the situation. Don Mattingly is expected to accompany Torre to Los Angeles as his bench coach. Torre is also interested in hiring Kevin Long, his hitting coach with the Yankees.
The Dodgers were 82-80 this season under Little and were beset by clubhouse unrest. Owner Frank McCourt, a Boston native, decided Torre is best suited to quell that situation.
Torre turned down a one-year offer to remain as manager of the Yankees on Oct. 18. He had been with the Yankees 12 seasons, winning four World Series championships

LOL @ "beset with clubhouse unrest."
Well, with noted players manager Joe Torre on hand to sleep in the dugout, they will now have "clubhouse rest." He's LA's problem now, his day has been done.

That was actually funny. But if he could handle the Bronx Zoo, he can handle LA. I hope LA ends up under .500 though.

Scott Proctor can't be happy about this. It should probably speed up his Tommy John surgery by a year or two.

I am happy for Joe Torre. I wish him well, through it all. I wanted him gone, he's gone. I still think he's a dope and an idiot for walking away from the Yankee job, but I hope he has fun. I would also like to see Mattingly back at work. Read today Bowa is probably going with him too. So a bit of the Bronx is heading out to LA.

It will be funny if the Dodgers make the playoffs/Series and the Yanks don't...well not for us but many will have a laugh at our expense...imo

And it would further solidify Torre's legend.

Slim chance of that becoming our worry. POST today is saying Eiland is a likely pick for pitching coach, and old friend Bobby Meacham, who was with Joe G in Florida, may be on board as third base coach. Sounds like Girardi is getting to pick a couple of his coaches, but others are being foisted upon him.

As bad as the National League is, I'd say the chance is quite a bit more than slim.

Yeah, that NL is so bad the Dodgers have been running the table every year. What have I been thinking?
Torre wont turn the tide. If anything, the team may regress with his lollygag style.

He definitely has a shot at making the playoffs as it stands now.
It doesn't take much in the NL, so yeah, that's a good point. And because of the weak league, a team willing to put some money into the team could get to the top of the ladder pretty quickly, and the Dodgers have a nice budget.

i'm hoping Joe takes the Dodgers all the way to the World Series, they have a good mix over there with veteran and young players.

I'm devastated that Don Mattingly will be in another uniform. Mattingly to me was what Mantle and Munson were to the generations before and what Derek Jeter is to the younger generation now. This one hurts.

Fat chance on that. Torre's grown comfortable with getting the boot in the first round.

As a Yankee fan I can't really root for the Dodgers. Even on another coast they will always be 'dem bums'.

Mattingly in another uniform sucks, but it's not like it cheapens his Yankeeness. Even Yogi managed and coached elsewhere.

Mattingly's son Preston is in the Dodgers system. He is struggling mightily, so the two may not ever share the Dodger blue.

I have been talking about this to my wife and her Dodger-fan family all weekend - how agonizing it is going to be seeing Mattingly in the Dodger uni. At the very least I'll have more interest in seeing the Dodgers play more next year.
It's funny how much clout Joe Torre carries outside the realm of Yankee fans. You talk to die-hard Dodger fans and they are all on board with this being the big move that is going to put them over the top. I keep telling them - if THIS is you're big move, don't expect too much.

The Dodgers are a .500 team in the NL, and had the league's best record fairly deep into the season before they collapsed. In the NL, that means you're not that far off. A couple of decent moves here and there, and they will be serious NL contenders.

Joe Torre and Don Mattingly sitting on the bench does NOT constitute a couple of decent moves.
Randy Wolf has been bought out of his contract, BTW.

A good manager helps teams move to the next level. And in the NL, anything can happen.

Would that be the same Randy Wolf you inexplicably touted as part of the Dodgers "strong" starting rotation?
The Dodgers suck. They have a LOT of work to do.

They have a solid crop of young players. Torre may have to manage again now that he doesn't have a $200 million dollar squad to sit and stare at from the dugout during the playoffs.
