And that's probably why I'm not usually a fan of the latest/greatest Hollywood blockbuster. Aside from a few occurrences, I rarely participate in all of the fawning over Hollywood's flavor of the month.
I'm a big fan of indie movies. People look at my netflix queue and their reaction to 99 of 100 selections is, "mmm..never heard of that." Not trying to sound like a movie snob or anything, but it's my experience that most of the time when a movie is over hyped, the term "over hyped" is appropriate. I think Borat was over hyped. Somehow I doubt then when The Godfather or Gone With The Wind were released, people were billing either as "The Greatest Movie Ever Made"...and I don't think it's fair to call Borat "The Funniest Movie Ever Made" when clearly it wasn't, and all you're doing is setting it up to fall short of meeting people's expectations.
I can easily 50 movies that are funnier than Borat...to me....which you've already pointed out as a case of personal preference. I just think people made such huge statements about Borat that it’s going to be tough to live up to them.
And keep in mind, I say all this as a fan of Sacha Baron Cohen. I would have liked nothing more than for this to actually have been the funniest movie ever. And if there’s a Borat II, I’ll go see it, rooting for its success…hoping it’s funny as hell.

Sure, I'm a fan to, but that crowd last night was one of the biggest mixed bags I've ever seen, and I saw old couples howling. You wouldn't think old people would laugh at it but they did.
It IS one of the best comedies ever, because you can take it for what it is and you can also peel away at it's layers. There's personal preference comedy and there's universal, and this falls under the latter.
And if you got 50 movies funnier please name them, because I can only name about 3 or 4 movies where I laughed just as hard at.

And dont even start with this Police Academy garbage.
What are you guys going to pull out of your ass next, Cheech and Chong movies?

Yeah, really. Dumb and Dumber? Porky's? Spaceballs? LOL!
Good thing we got Police Academy topping that list. The goofy black guy making machine noises ranks up there with some of the funniest things EVER!! WOWIE!

Porkys is still funny. So is Three Amigos.
That's a HUGE underrated film.

Three amigos gave me a few chuckles, but that's another movie that loses it's charm as you get older.
You know what's a timeless comedy? The Jerk.
You know what's underrated? The Big Lebowski.

For the record, I never once cited Police Academy or Old School as even being funny, let alone funniest of all time.
That's all on Balls. Steve Guttenberg is kinda like Tim Allen for me...all I need to know is that they're in the movie and I won't go see it. And no, Cheech And Chong movies were not funnier. But if all you need to do is out-humor a movie about guys driving around in a van made of weed, then OK...Borat is the funniest movie ever...NOT. Borat is NOT the funniest movie ever. Borat is the funniest movie ever not. Borat is the funniest movie ever........... ................. .................. .................... ........... .............. ............... ............... ................ ........... ........ not.
I think Animal House was funnier. I think The Blues Brothers was funnier. I think Fast Times At Ridgemont High was funnier. I think The Big Lebowski was funnier. I think in the mocumentary category, Spinal Tap and Sweet And Lowdown were much funnier. I think in the category the proposes real reactions from the public at large to crazy antics, the Jackass movies were funnier. If anyone remembers The Pope Must Die - funnier. I think Shakes The Clown was funnier...hell I even think that Clerks and The Jay And Silent Bob movies were funnier. I'm not gonna keep going on and on.
A lot of the movies I've cited are personal choices...I don't know if buy into the universally funny concept. There has to be some people out there that just don't find Borat funny at all....therefore the movie can't necessarily be universally funny.

The only one of all those movies you just named that I have seen was Spinal Tap. Its aged well, its funnier to me now than it was when I first saw it.
Going back to The Jerk, thats my favorite comedy movie of all time.

The Jerk isn't that funny. Three Amigos never gets old.
Never saw the Big Lebowski. Was Val Venus in it?

Tom, I would URGE you to see Sweet And Lowdown.
Are you seriously telling me you've never seen The Blues Brothers or Fast Times At Ridgemont High? How can that be...I would think most people would have seen those movies just due to the sheer overexposure alone.
Also...if anything is true, The Jerk is much closer to being universally funny than Borat is.

Yeah, I know we went over it....but I guess I just wasn't aware of the extent of just how many huge, historical films you hadn't seen.
Astonishing.
See "Sweet And Lowdown."

LOL @ "historical" films.
Look, if I want to brush up on my cinema lackings, I will reach for Citizen Kane or Casablanca before I reach for Animal House or Porkys.

touche...but to be fair....Porky's should not be mentioned in the same breath as Animal House.
Porky's was crap.
If you find The Jerk funny, then you'd find Animal House funny.

I'll tell you what...here's a little list of some movies that for some reason unbeknownst to me have gone down in history a some sort of classic comedies, but I think should have been shit-canned before their release:
Porky's sucked. I can only imagine the sequels did too Society would have been better off if the Police Academy or Revenge Of The Nerds movies were simply never released. Any and all Tim Allen movies Any non-48 Hours and non-Beverly Hills Cop Eddie Murphy movies All American Pie and related ripoff movies. All Back To The Future movies beyond Part I Weekend At Bernies and sequels
By the way, Fletch was also funnier than Borat. Speaking of...anyone hear the rumors a few years back that Fletch III was in the work with Ben Affleck playing the role of Fletch?

Porkys was the American Pie of its era. It did not suck.

American Pie was not very good either. As a matter of fact, American Pie was quite gay.

The Jerk is hilarious. End of story. Steve Martin saying, "I was born a poor black child" is classic. It's been a while since I've seen The Three Amigos, but it's not quite up there with The Jerk.

The latest rumor regarding a Fletch sequel is that it will be called 'Fletch Won' and it was supposed to star Zack Braff from Scrubs. It is actually a prequel to the series.

There is nothing gay about Shannon Elizabeth naked.
Unless you're a chick.
Over the weekend I saw Goal--a soccer movie that came out in 2005. It was actually a very good movie, about some illegal alien that got really good at soccer and tried out for a British pro-team.
There are actually 2 sequels coming out to it, and I'll likely catch them in the theater.
This is one of the better soccer movies I have seen. Victory will always be my favorite, but this was a decent movie. I recommend it.

OK, I'm looking for 1977 horror movie starring James Brolin, "The Car" about a possessed Lincoln Mark III supposedly being driven by EVIL. Netflix doesn't have it, and when I go to Amazon to find it for purchase the list price show starting new & used at $66.99. What the hell is that about? The VHS copies are $25 bucks!!!!
It was a low budget, cheap movie...what's the deal?

Thats the deal - they were low budget, and not that many copies were churned out. So they are practically rare archival footage. Same thing with a favorite oldschool horror want of my own, Homebodies, the movie about the elderly people set for eviction who go on a murderous spree.
Whats funny about this is the movie Cars may be rereleased on DVD in a year by some teeny company, making all this rare footage a bust. I have seen that happen, where movies I saw from Amazon used at $25 one month are upcoming DVD releases for $8.99 by some smalltime DVD distro. A recent example - not a horror, but a cheesy drama, was the 70s movie "Stunts." Could not find that under any circumstance, unless I took on a second and third job and could buy it rare and used. Well, now, its all over - I got a DVD copy for $5.99 last year, and just recently saw a version in a Waldbaums DVD bin for $2.99.

Back in the 1980s, HBO aired a movie called Jocks. It was one of those classic 1980s sex movies which was based on a tennis team in a college. Gratuitous nudity was there, and so was Ogre from Revenge of the Nerds. Each tennis player was a different style of tennis player, and Ogre's style was he hit the ball at his opponent, injuring him.
Yesterday in J&R, I found this movie on DVD and will watch it for the first time in years as soon as I can.

"Ogre" must have had a contract with HBO, as he also appeared in one of my all-time favorite sports shows "1st And Ten" - about fictional pro football team, The California Bulls owned by Delta Burke who inherited the team from her husband - a spoof on Georgia Frontiere. This was also a sports show complete with gratuitous nudity and foul language. The funniest part of this show was the cheesy use of USFL L.A. Express footage for the action-game scenes.
