Might as well get the latest season's thread going.
Hopefully this season will produce some talent, unlike Fantasia.

Show tonight SUCCCKKKEEEDDDD
I dont know how much more of this audition garbage I can take. Its so played out. And there are another 2 hours tomorrow, and I believe another 7 hours of auditon shows after that before they get down to any serious business.
I was bored to death watching this tonight, and thats all I have to say.

I agree with that. Problem is, there is likely a fairly even split between people who like and don't like the auditions. I'm one of the people that hates them.
There are 10000 people. They don't all get to audition for the judges. There are lots of people that screen for people that go to the judges.
Because of that, the auditions piss me off because in reality, those singers that suck ass are only put through BECAUSE they really suck. In a competition where you're trying to find the best, no singer that is absolutely horrible should get to the judges.
But they do because people find it funny.
Out of 10000 people, 17 made it to Hollywood. 17! I don't believe for one second that only 17 people could carry a tune. That means good singers didn't get passed the screeners while shitty ones did. Kind of stupid.
Of those 17, I think I liked ONE. There were 3 or 4 that were decent, but only one seemed capable of going beyond Hollywood. That one would be Sarah Kruger, who was hot and clearly had the best voice of the night.
Of course, they'll likely keep putting the crack baby through because she screams loud.
That said, I get a kick out of watching people have their dreams crushed.
But here's the thing--what kind of moron would agree to have a vignette about them filmed, AFTER they got shot down? And if you leave in tears, why would you come back and do a Prince song? Makes me think that they go up to these people and say, "yes, you got booted, but if you let us embarrass you more, we'll put you on TV."
I was partial to the very first audition. She came off so nice, and then broke down when her dreams were crushed. It was a very Nelson moment for me as I laughed, pointed to the screen, and said, "HA HA!"

So, does that mean that Paula, Randy, and Simon watched 10,000 individual auditions? Or does that mean 10,000 people showed up to the various auditions and for the sake of TV, they purposely let in some shitty singers to audition in lieu of some decent singers?

I believe it works like this:
10000 people show up. They are divided into groups and get screened by a secondary group of judges. They may have 100 of these judges for all we know. They probably do since they certianly can afford it.
Those secondary judges decide who actually gets in to see Paula and Simon and Randy.

I guess I am in the minority with this as I always watch the auditon portions of Idol and love it but once they go to Hollywood I stop watching all together...I may watch the first one or two Hollywood shows when it is still a large group but once they get to the last 20-30 and it gets all serious I tune out.....
Good to see Randy a little more like Simon this year......

I wouldn't say you're in the minority. American Idol has been the number one show on TV, and the auditions are a part of that. People do like them. You are more in line with the Justin school of thinking when it comes to American Idol. He also likes the auditions and hates the rest of the show.
What I found annoying was that only one person shown last night to me, has any reasonable talent. 10000 people, and they find just ONE?

They did not show all of the 17 who advanced. I would be surprised if they showed a third of them. Who knows what we missed in their mad rush to show people in stupid costumes making asses of themselves, and leaving in tears?
Cho, did you even stop to read the post before yours? Balls explained it all, then you came on and asked the questions all over again. People need to do a better job of reading what others have to say on this board.
Randy, Paula and Simon probably see 100-150 people that day, if that.

You're wrong as always Tom. They showed 6 of the yes, which is clearly more than 1/3. It's more like 35%. But what sucks is of those 6, only one of them seemed to be good enough to be a potential top 12 candidate. It would seem that if one of the 11 unshown people that made it to Hollywood were REALLY good, we might have seen that person. I don't remember if we saw Fantasia's audition, but we did see Carrie, Taylor, and Ruben's auditions on the air. I think the most significant person ever to NOT have his audition shown on the air was Bo Bice.
I just hope we don't see too many cases of the judges over praising mediocre singers. Crack baby was not that good. She was just loud. She wasn't horrific, but she wasn't that good.

Watched the Seattle auditions episode tonight. The idea that Paula, Randy, and Simon kept trying to push was that Seattle was awful.
It seemed to me that they let some mediocre talent on to the next level. The first guy was already a two-time American Idol audition reject. The 16 year old daughter of ex Giant Phillippi Sparks turned out to be a dud compared to 16 year old phenoms from seasons past.
I didn't see the Tuesday's auditions episode, but I'm predicting a real let down in talent this season based on what I've seen thus far.
PS - Wikipedia (take it for what it's worth) says that Randy Jackson did session work with Stryper. I would think that would automatically disqualify him from having a say in determining America's next "Idol."

Jackson also had a stint playing bass with Journey, so the Stryper thing would not shock me, especially as a session player is merely a hired gun.

Due to my dodgeball doubleheader last night, I am only half hour into it. I stopped the DVR after the ugly chick singing the Pussycat Dolls. I'll pick it up later today.

this is the worst show on tv. I watch the auditions, just to see them make a fool out of people. The guy who looks like Cartman was the best.

Actually, I think a lot of the people are making fools out of THEM, and the viewers. A lot of them are just putting on an act, to get on TV, and they keep fallling for it and putting them on.
Last night I had it on but used the time constructively, to read a bit and burn a couple of my albums. The audition shows suck.

Yet the ratings set a new record. The premiere actually got 2 million MORE than last season's premiere. It's unbelievable. I hope Seattle produced at least 2 or 3 real contenders. It's a 2 hour show, and half hour into it, not a single yes. I'd like to see them showcase the talent rather than the shit, but a lot of people really like this part.

I used to be a big Idol fan however I have lost interest for the past two seasons. I attempted to watch the "auditions" last night and, when was it on....Tuesday night? Anyway, it interfered with my regular programing, had my husband avoiding me, and frankly it was boring! I just can't get into it until about the top 10.

Well, the 16 year old daughter of the Giant was good, but Simon had it right. Too over the top, but good. The best guy was a guy Simon rejected but the other 2 put through. Other than that, again, nothing overly impressive.

I was glad when they told the 17 year old Indian kid that he was better than his 19 year old sister.
I was even happier when Seacrest asked who the judge liked better and the 17 yeard old said, "I'm not gonna say." He OWNED his bitchy sister in the best possible way...the way in which you don't come right out and just belittle them, but you do it in a subtle way that really mindfucks the other person. He's all up in her head now...she's going DOWN!
I also nearly fell off the couch laughing when Seacrest just stood there, silent, staring at the software geek who destroyed The Righteous Brothers, trying to evoke a reaction out of him...that was funny shit!!!!!

Rating for Wed night was only down a tick, so people are still getting off on these audition shows. Another four hour block over 2 nights next week. Again, I will cast a passing eye as I burn records or read but I wont really wake up to this until the competition starts. Sorry, but I have no interest in getting into the critiquing portion that is going on here for simple auditions.

I'm obviously in the same camp. For me, the auditions are about the people that make it through, not the retards who don't. I tend to watch the auditions simply to try to figure out who the possible contenders are.
I'm just not impressed. So far, 3 people stick out. The NFLer's daughter, Sarah Krueger, and this one guy that Simon voted no on but sounded really good. Of those three, only Sarah Krueger is a true contender.
The Memphis commercial seemed a little promising.

Balls, again, they are not showing everyone. So its a skewed view. Of the 17 people that advanced on day one, I read they showed 6 people for more than 3 seconds.
This is all about showing the fools. And I am not interested, and wont rate any contenders on what the show cherrypicks to show.

Understood, but usually, the real contenders do get face time in the auditions. I remember seeing Taylor Hicks, Katharine McPhee, Carrie Underwood, Ruben Studdard, Clay Aiken, Constantine, Paris, and many more. Paris sucks by the way.
In fact, the only really significant contender that was NOT really shown that I can remember was Bo Bice.
And by the way, that brother/sister combo was not that good. The brother was slightly better than the sister, but neither one of them have a shot in hell. The sister's looks will help her, but they will not be going too far.

One thing I have experienced thus far through the auditions:
I have a weird reaction to certain TV show situations...always have. Sometimes when a character on TV gets into an awkward situation I get this overwhelming feeling of embarrassment for THEM and for ME having to witness it....sometimes even to the point where I'm finding myself changing the channel almost unconsciously. That feeling has been evoked several times during these auditions.
Watching the ugly blond girl who sang Pussycat Dolls with her Mom next to her.....that gave me the creeps.

What is painful to me is when kids who have absolutely NO singing ability come to the audition, travel great distances even, and throw fits and bawls their eyes out when rejected. They obviously have issues, possibly with rejection, and are publicly humiliated. The network must purposely do this. It's sad and embarrassing and just painful to watch. That's when I change the channel. The flip side to that is the completely odd. I found this years "software guy" entertaining.....like a train wreck. He should hook-up with Anna Nicole Smith. She could have him tattooed on her back. Anyone else see her new tats? Horrible!

Actually, that's one of the few things I don't find painful. The true pain is not that their dreams are crushed, but that they sang in the first place. Anyone with that bad of a voice deserves to receive the same pain that they give.
I think most of these people belong in mental institutions, not on TV.
I do agree that the network does do things to humiliate losers like that. They should NEVER get passed the screening. They should make the judges jobs harder, by only sending them GOOD singers.
I heard that on the first day, they locked one of the doors on purpose to further embarrass the losers.
THAT is obnoxious.

It's kinda similar to a quote I once heard from Bob Costas summing up the sports talk radio industry:
"Idiots fielding phone calls from even bigger idiots."
Simon, Paula, and Randy aren't the sharpest tools in the shed either (well, maybe Simon....I mean the guy does have a knack for the creative genius). I mean, if Paula freakin' Abdul can make you feel low....you've got issues buddy!
