Even if you take your ball and go home, the fact is that defies the "Spirit" of the competition.
Hey look man...don't get all bitter at me about this. I'm not asking to anyone to start a letter-writing campaign against the show. Simon calls the shots, not me, and I'm still watching. Just thought I'd express my opinion on the matter.
Doesn't matter anyway...Sundance is gonna SMOKE them all! And no I have NO problem with his father being Roy Head (where Balls and I differ)
Saw the Chris Daughtry video this morning on VH-1 (seems as though they've long since run out of video ideas and have recycled the same script and set many times over) ... anyway, as my old Liverpudlian friend would say, "Not three bad mate."
By the way, KTLA, local LA TV station (I guess it's the former WB Network, now the CW network or something like that) are showing the old audition and "second round" shows from the Kelly Clarkson season. I was surprised at how BAD so many of the contestants sounded in the second round...even Clarkson wasn't stellar.

It doesn't matter if you are a "professional" back up singer, it doesn't matter if you've performed in Broadway shows, etc. You just have to be unsigned talent. It's a record deal on the line. Of course you are going to draw back up singers. They are more unknown than someone who fronts a local band in my opinion. Especially in the age of Myspace where local bands are getting plenty of exposure. My brother's band is on myspace and has over 40,000 "friends." I doubt 40,000 people can name Christina Aguilera's back-up singer. Can you name any backup singers?

No, but I'd bet a lot more people have seen Christina Aguillera's back up singer than your brother's band (no offense to your brother as I'm sure he is ten times the musician that X-tina is - no sarcasm intended there).
I guess the contention is, these back up singers, especially for someone like Christina Aguillera...well they've already "made it" in a sense.
Like I said, I'm not up in arms about...it simply raised an eyebrow

Yes a lot more people have "seen" the back up singer. But nobody would know who they were. They haven't heard the back up singer sing alone. They have heard them sing back-up with other back-up singers. Nobody knows the back up singers' names. Nobody would recognize the back up singer anywhere. Not to mention that many times the back-up singers that tour with the singers are not same musicians they use in the studio. In which case they don't even get any credit. I don't get why them being aloud to try-out is so bothersome to some people. (Not meaning you, I am talking about others who are adamantly against it.) Especially since they probably won't even win.

Interesting rumor: www.tvsquad.com/2007/02/06/has-long-haired-idol-contestant-been-disqualified/Seems that a rumor is going around that the guy who looks like Castro may have been disqualified due to a refusal to shave his beard and change his look. I agree that it would be a real shame if that's truly the case, but then again, I find that very hard to believe for a few reasons. First, doing something like that would get the show bad press. But more importantly, the show is still in the judges' hands. They don't HAVE to DQ him for a beard. They can simply say that he wasn't good enough, and dump him.

Do you think they leave the left hand door to the audition room locked for the sole purpose of watching people crash into it?

They absolutely leave the left door locked to fuck with people. Big time dick move. I didn't watch live last night and skimmed the show with the DVR broadcast, avoiding much of the malarky.
The last guy stood out as a Ruben-type. And I liked the chick who sang for the mayor of Houston and cried because she sucked. One thing that I truly enjoy is watching people's dreams get crushed. I ALWAYS do the Nelson laugh.

Enough already with these dumb audition shows. As for the door, while they leave one of them locked, that is the case in most double-door situations. I dont see the big deal....unless you are an idiot, you always go to the right. Why people are even trying the left door, well, they deserve the humiliation.
I dont necessarily laugh at those whose dreams are crushed, they did a lot more by simply making tv than most others who pick up a mic. And a lot of them get some of that "residual noteriety." To be honest, I would rather not see them at all. Lets get the competition portion started already, I am bored to death.

Looks like the good part of the show will begin on Tuesday. Tonight they have a residual audition show. I may skip it entirely, but I definitely won't watch it live. I'd rather deal with the Lost return. There's a recap at 9pm, and the main episode is on at 10.
I really can't stand the bad auditions. It sucks that a significant part of the audience likes them.
But I will say this, at least in this particular episode, there were a few funny ones. The guy who sang Amazing Grace was very funny, and I'm sure he was just there to help his cousin. He had a good sense of humor too.
The last guy was probably my favorite on the night, but part of that was because I like Sam Cooke, and he sang a couple of his songs and did them well. He might even be good enough to make it to the round of 32 and get to the vote. I think though that his problem is that he is too similar to Ruben Studdard.
Studdard has a very good voice and I think he deserved to win, but he was very one dimensional. This guy has the same problem.
They had that blonde chick that is supposed to be this year's Kellie Pickler, but I wasn't that impressed. Overall, I haven't been THAT impressed with these auditions.
But I hope Hollywood will get some people to stand out a bit.

Count me as significant..lol..As stated I disagree and my time for watching Idol is sadly close to coming to an end for this season...I watch through the first couple Hollywood shows where it still has that "audition feel" with people still freaking out, teaming up, fighting etc..so I figure I have 2 or 3 shows left..Once they get to the final 24 or whatever it is and just sing every week I am out.......

It's funny, but there are a LOT of people who think of Idol like Captain. And there are a LOT of people who feel like Tom and I do. I guess that's why they don't mess with the formula.

The ratings are astronomical for both styles of show. That is why they dont mess with the formula. I like Idol cause I get other things done through all the claptrap, I always watch (and listen) with a book within reach.

Yep can't argue the formula.....Satisfies both camps.the people who like to see people make idiots out of themselves and those who also enjpoy the singing and the talent the good ones bring...

I could have done with an extra episode of Hollywood week, and one less episode of the damn auditions. It seemed rushed, and tonight, they are just revealing the top 24. Not really a major event.
I was a bit surprised at a couple of the cuts, including the very first singer that night. She was good. It's almost as if they were planning on cutting the first 6 people no matter what.
Some decent people were cut, but most of them were lousy at the auditions--a sign that they should never have got through in the first place.
Then there was that chick who sang the song her mom wanted her to sing, and got cut because she sucked. I was glad that the judges didn't give her a second chance. It was also funny watching Simon shoot her down. Simon can be a dick at times, and sometimes he says things to further his own image, but a lot of times, he doesn't. This was one fo those times he was on the money.
I was getting tired of the Matt Sato saga. This gay kid's "my mom never says she loves me" crap was starting to sicken me, especially since he wasn't even that good. There were better singers than he that were cut. But I guess it was worth it for his phonecall of shame when he finally got booted.
The guy from the USS Ronald Reagan deserved the cut. He fucked up royally in song selection, and he just wasn't that good. They always tell people not to do Whitney Houston songs because Houston is so good that it's very rare that you can do it justice. Same should be said about Josh Groban songs. I'm no fan of Groban, but choosing one of his songs will lead to a lot of downfalls.
With the group stuff, I was glad there was a crackdown on forgetting the words.
The beat boxer guy was actually damn good. I don't know how far he'll go, or even if he'll make the top 24, but that group part was pretty good. I also think the Jack Osbourne lookalike was talented.
Very funny watching Baylie Brown choke. Other than looking like Tara Reid, I never thought she was that good. But she's 16, hot, and blonde, so she went through. Until she just stood on stage. HA! The best was watching her whine about the other chick flirting. At 16, she will likely be back.
I laughed at the Indian kid not celebrating because his sister's dream had been crushed. It would have been better if he talked trash, hit her with a chair and done a Hogan posedown, but at least we got to see her in her crying glory.
I was a bit disappointed with Sundance Head, but obviously, the judges had him going to the top 24 or at least damn close from his first audition.
Overall, decent episode, but I think this should have been stretched out over 2 episodes, with one less audition.

Yeah, I agree with much of what you said. I find it funny that they spent ELEVEN HOURS on auditions, and ONE on Hollywood. Makes no sense, actually, especially since a lot of the "drama" was in Hollywood. Well, tonight we move onward.
Some things that made me happy, along with you, was Brown choking on the words and being zipped out of there (although one of her teammates also forgot the words a bit and was moved through) and the gay kid getting zonked. I can not understand how these Moms and Grandmoms keep getting through to make a scene, that is something that has to be stopped, because its going to end up becoming a fixture for the "I want to be on TV" crowd for years to come.
Sundance Head better step it up, yes. The beatbox guy was good - Hell, that whole act was good, but beat-boxing will not get you by week to week. Its a singing competition. Well, this said, I am happy the auditions are in the rearview and we are moving onward.

The beatbox guy can sing too. What's funny was that his audition SEEMED like a joke, but it's real. It's damn real.
They really should have spent more time in Hollywood. Hell, I would go as far as cutting 2 days of the auditions in favor of a full week of Hollywood. The biggest point of the audition process is to get to know who the contestants are and who CAN sing. Hollywood separates a lot of goods from a lot of greats.
Some of the more talented people didn't even appear this week, like Sarah Krueger. What happened to her? Did she not make Hollywood? Did she get cut?
Did the guy who walked out of Hollywood make it to THIS round? I wasn't sure if I saw him in the "cut room" or not.
Tonight is going to be a boring hour. We're just going to find out who we get to vote for next week.

I disagree that tonight is going to be boring. I have no problems with a show introducing or reinforcing who will be fighting for the votes. I like that long walk to the judges to find out if they're in or out. I have no problem with tonights fare.

Did anyone notice that the contestant Robyn Troup (sp?) was also the girl who 'won' a chance to sing with Justin Timberlake during the Grammys?
Jeez, the kid said he never hugs his parents, but then hugs some dude he's known for 3 minutes. And fuck, he made it seem like mom hated him. Did you hear her reaction on the phone? She was exstatic, doesn't sound like someone who can't say I love you.

Sundance Head is not his real name. His name is Jason Head. So its not all that funny.
The girl who won the Grammy thing was already eliminated from Idol by the time the Grammys rolled around.

Yes, Sundance Head really disappointed me too! He'd BETTER step it up. He's still my choice to win this thing.
I was pretty pissed about them sending Bailey home when she and 1/2 of the Jersey skanks both forgot the words, but Bailey was clearly the better singer.

Bailey isn't ready. She should try to take singing lessons over the next year and come back. Either that, or try to use her Idol exposure to get an agent.

Bailey did worse than simply "forget the words." You cant compare the way she stood up there like an ass for over 5 seconds, not knowing what to do, with the way one of the other Jersey skanks forget the words and put something together. No way they could have passed Bailey through.
