It's a 3-day fest. I only have tickets for the Sunday show, so I'm not gonna see Anti-Nowhere.
I'm only going in the first place to see the ALL set (with Scott Reynolds!); now that I know who Big Drill Car is I'm pretty excited for them too.
I'm kinda stuck seeing The Casualties, though I have no interest, as they're second from last. HorrorPops are on at the same time as The Methadones, so I may well go to the 2nd stage to see them instead.
I'll have whatever pictures of FPY decides to take, as I myself am no photog. I don't know how much of the show She'll attend.
Here's the lineup the day I'm going:
Main Stage
1:05 - Black President 1:40 - Valient Thorr 2:20 - Municipal Waste 3:00 - Mustard Plug 3:35 - DOA 4:15 - HorrorPops 5:10 - The Mighty Mighty Bosstones 6:45 - Jay Reatard 7:20 - Big Drill Car 8:00 - Leftöver Crack 8:40 - The Casualties 9:25 - ALL
"Red Bull Stage"
12:00 - Overated 12:30 - Love and Squalor 1:00 - The Vandon Arms 1:35 - After The Fall 2:10 - Scouts Honor 2:45 - Static Radio 3:20 - Prizzy, Prizzy Please 4:00 - Dummy 4:35 - The Methadones 5:05 INTERMISSION 6:30 - The Ergs! 7:10 - Black President 7:50 - Teenage Bottlerocket 8:30 - Paint It Black

Big Drill Car is good...definitely not your typical old O.C. punk rock band...but good.

Saw Killing Time on Sunday but I have three shows (possibly four) lined up in the next week.
tomorrow: Chuck Ragan (Hot Water Music)/Ben Nichols (Lucero) /Tim Barry (Avail) acoustic set at Asbury Lanes
Monday: Rise Against/Alkaline Trio/Thrice/Gaslight Anthem (NYC)
Tuesday: Skarhead/Bulldoze/Danny Diablo/Wisdom In Chains/the Mongoloids (Brooklyn) (this is the undecided one - only because I got a hectic week, not cause I don't want to go)
Friday: NOFX/Dillinger 4 (NJ)

Is that Beck, John?
I have no major issue with Beck....not a huge fan....but certainly not in the Duran Duran, Tears For Fears, Def Lepard category.

I'm on a concert lull until AC/DC at the Garden in November. Those NKOTB pictures make me want to hurl, by the way.

the funny thing about the NKOTB concert, to me, was Donnie Walberg.
He had actually established some amount of coolness factor with his acting career....Saw III (was it III?), small part in The Departed, as well as some indie stuff.
But in his New Kid persona, he immediately reverted back to that annoying wannabe hip hop thug that we all loathed....definitely hasn't transcended the way his brother has.
I don't think Marky Mark would be caught DEAD in glittery pants these days, unless it were for a movie role. (well, to be fair, I'm sure the boatloads of money thrown at the New Kids could get them to wear just about anything).

Fuck the Congress Theater for it's horrible sound and lousy organizational skills and fuck Chicago for enforcing an 11pm curfew, meaning that ALL's set got cut short (the venue actually cut the PA in the middle of a song; ALL played a few more songs through the guitar amps, without the mic, and then security made them stop in the middle of another song).
I arrived at 5:30 and saw the following bands:
The Mighty Mighty Bosstones - I forgot how great they are. Really kickass set, even with the lousy sound quality.
Jay Reatard - lousy
Big Drill Car - pretty good. I'm definitely gonna seek out their CDs.
Leftöver Crack - not good but could have been worse
The Casualties - ch0, I think you understated how awful they are
ALL - #1 and the best until the abrupt finish

You traveled all the way to Chicago for that?
I think I would prefer to see The Casualties in a venue with poor sound....now if they could only keep the curtain closed as well.

I havent heard of those fucks in ten years. i used to see them at coney Island high. A friend of mine was in another band with the lead singer Jorge's Wife or something.i found them mildly entertaining. some people fucking loved them, not sure why.

I'd prefer to see The Casualties in a venue with no sound. And no, I traveled all the way to Chicago to 1) see ALL; 2) enjoy a long weekend in a cool city; and 3) get my picture taken with my favourite guitarist:

Also, I downloaded Batch and CD Type Thing and can't stop listening to them; Big Drill Car's set on Sunday didn't nearly do them justice.

Nothing from White Trash, Ribbed, or Heavy Petting Zoo, barely anything new, and basically they played all the songs I didn't want to hear from So Long and Punk in Drublic instead of the ones I like better.

I don't know who these guys are, but they're playing a little club near my house, and I immediately thought this would be a band Tom would like:

My answer to this question after Thurs night will be ... THE DWARVES!

|
|
Post by Chris on Jan 16, 2009 12:31:00 GMT -5
The Dwarves KICKED ASS last night at the Blue Cafe in Long Beach.
I hadn't gone to show in Long Beach in some time ... I had forgotten about the huge White Power contingent who frequent punk rock shows in Long Beach and the South Bay.
But, meatheads aside, it was a fucking phenomenal show.
An opening band from O.C., called the Uprising, who are basically a 25 years too late derivative of old hardcore like Cro-Mags, Murphy's Law, etc.... sucked ass, but they did make me think of Tom when they closed with a Megadeth, Metallica, Slayer, Sepultura medley.
But back to the point.....Blag The Ripper, Rex Everything, Hewhocannotbenamed, and company were fucking outstanding....the Dwarves are simply a punk rock band for the ages.
I'm not a big set list memorizer like some of you are able to do (like most of you would recognize these songs anyway...Domi?)
Let Me Show How It's Done Over You FEFU (Fuck, Eat, and Fuck you Up) Unrepentant Must Have Blood River City Rapist Let's Fuck Fuck You Up And Get High Demonica Salt Lake City Dominator You Gotta Burn ...and more

I just saw Lucero on Sunday night at the Mercury Lounge. Good time and long set. Something that doesn't happen with punk bands although they don't sound like a punk band. They have the whole country/southern rock sound going for them but Ben Nichols is highly touted as a great frontman in the punk scene. The guy has some solo records so it kinda seemed like they'd do a 2 hour set. I just get impatient cause I need a chair to sit my ass in after standing so long. Show was fun and Lucero really brought it considering they had spent the 2 previous night opening for the Black Keys so I'm sure they were happy that they were the headliners. Check their myspace if interested. Ben Nichols has been compared to Kurt Cobain but with a "more gruffier, raspier voice. " This band is really, really good. They come highly reccommended from me. profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewProfile&friendID=10598738
