According to ESPN.com, Don Nelson is returning to the NBA to coach the Golden State Warriors (again) and replace ex-Stanford coach Mike Montgomery.
Nellie is definitely a better coach than a GM. Maybe he'll acquire Shawn Bradley again.
And if I'm a bar owner in the Oakland area, I'm planning for expansion and retirement. Nellie the lush is coming home!
All kidding aside, he IS a good coach.

Anyone have an audio link to the infamous Allen Iverson "It's just practice" rant?

I've always really liked Allen Iverson for being SO unapologetic for who he is....and I'll leave it at that.
EDIT - man, that's FUNNY!!!!! Practice, Man! How da hell can I make my teammates better by practicing?

Good riddance to one of my least-favorite players of all-time:
With no available NBA jobs close to home, Toni Kukoc appears resigned to staying there for this season and beyond.
"It looks like I'm done," Kukoc told The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel after playing in a charity golf tournament. "There are teams that want me, but I don't want to go far from home."
Kukoc, who lives in Highland Park, Ill., only wanted to play for the Bucks or the Bulls. He played for Milwaukee the past four seasons.
"My choice was either Chicago or Milwaukee," he told the newspaper. "Milwaukee is going with a young team and Chicago is in need of a big guy, so that's it."
The 38-year-old Kukoc said that he won't miss basketball if this indeed is the end of his career.
"I think it's time for me to move away from basketball. It was a huge part of my life and gave me pretty much everything I desired but there comes a time when you just can't take it anymore.
"I can still play 10, 15, 20 minutes, maybe, but I don't need it anymore. I always felt like I needed to play basketball. Right now, it's not my most desirable thing anymore. I'd rather play golf," he told the newspaper.
The Bulls drafted Kukoc in the second round in 1990. With Chicago, the Croatia native won the Sixth Man Award in 1996 and NBA titles from 1996-98.
Kukoc also has played for Philadelphia and Atlanta. He averaged 4.9 points per game last season for Milwaukee in 65 games and averaged 11.6 ppg over his 13-year career.

Saw Stephan Marbury on Carson Daly last night. He actually bragged about bringing the ball up the court and hi-fiving LL Cool J courtside and exchanging brief pleasantries with LL....the ball was in play mind you.
Why is THAT cool? That's a disgrace.
Stephan Marbury's $14.95 basketball apparel line would be a pretty cool thing if he weren't such a douche!

Suns 161, Nets 157, double OT. Holy SHIT. One of the best games I've ever been to, and probably the best display of point-guard play I've ever had the pleasure of watching. Chris Paul, you are a hell of a talent, but you've got to wait your turn: Nash and Kidd are Nos. 1 and 2 on the point-guard list until further notice. Marbury? No. 50 or so. ;D

Back to the old ball:
NBA commissioner David Stern, in a stunning reversal, has decided to shelve the new microfiber composite basketball after just a few months of use and switch back to the old leather model for all games starting Jan. 1, according to sources close to the situation.
The decision will be formally announced by the league Tuesday, sources told ESPN.com.
Despite an avalanche of player complaints about the new synthetic model from the first day of training camp in October, skepticism was high among players that Stern would consent to a change during the season. But with a number of prominent players complaining of cuts on their hands caused by the new ball's high-friction cover -- Phoenix's Steve Nash and New Jersey's Jason Kidd among them -- Stern was forced to concede that an in-season swap was unavoidable with the new ball inflicting injuries.

The Iverson saga may finally be over. From ESPN.com:
The Denver Nuggets have reached an agreement in principle with the Philadelphia 76ers to acquire Allen Iverson, according to NBA front-office sources.
The trade, some two weeks after Iverson demanded a trade in Philly, would send Andre Miller, Joe Smith and two 2007 first-round picks to the Sixers for Iverson and perhaps another minimum-salaried player or two. It was expected to be completed later Tuesday barring any snags.
The Sixers had been hoping to take back only expiring contracts in any Iverson deal, unless they were receiving a top-flight young player like Minnesota's Randy Foye or Shaun Livingston of the Los Angeles Clippers.
But with Philly and Denver struggling to find a third team to join in to make the deal more financially enticing for the Sixers, they decided to end an auction that began in earnest when Iverson's demand to be traded was confirmed by Sixers chairman Ed Snider on Dec. 8.
This deal will bring Philly a former league assist leader in Miller, Smith's expiring salary of nearly $7 million and those two first-round picks in June projected to be in the 20s to go with their own lottery pick. Miller is averaging 13 points and 9.1 assists per game -- third-best in the NBA -- while Smith, an 11-year veteran, has played little this season, averaging only 13.5 minutes and 5.1 points per game.
The Nuggets' interest in Iverson dates to last February and has only increased since the Sixers made him available to the whole league earlier this month. Their chief motivation is pairing Iverson with Anthony in coach George Karl's up-tempo attack, but acquiring Iverson now just a day after Anthony and J.R. Smith were suspended for 15 and 10 games, respectively, for their roles in Saturday night's fight with the New York Knicks gives a much-needed jolt to Denver's depleted roster.
The former teammates from the 2004 U.S. Olympic squad won't be able to play together until Anthony is reinstated for a Jan. 20 game at Houston.
Miller, who led the NBA in assists with 10.9 per game for Cleveland in 2001-02, makes $8.7 million this season and has $19.2 million left on his contract over the following two seasons.
It's apparent, though, that the Sixers decided it was better to absorb Miller's contract now along with the opportunity to have three first-round selections in what scouts are calling the deepest draft in years as opposed to dragging out the Iverson saga further.
Iverson has been in exile for the past 11 days, languishing on the Sixers' inactive list while still accruing his per-game earnings of $156,218.
Iverson, 31, is averaging 31.2 points per game second only to Carmelo Anthony's 31.6 ppg -- in 15 games this season. He has a career 28.1 ppg scoring average in 11 NBA seasons, all in Philadelphia. He led the Sixers to the 2001 NBA Finals, where they lost to the Los Angeles Lakers in five games, but the team has seen little playoff success since.
He was Rookie of the year in 1997 and MVP in 2001. He has led the NBA in scoring four times, most recently in 2005, finishing in the league's top three every year since 1999, and twice led the league in steals.

Has there ever been coach or GM more hated in his own city than Isiah Thomas? I mean seriously, the New York media, and the fans are all over this guy. They despise him. I think that I can safely speak for the bulk of Knicks fans when I say that we are actually rooting for the Knicks failure only because the net resuly will eventually be Isiah leaving town. I can't think of a more despised sports figured who drew as much local hatred as Isiah.

I don't think Art Howe was anywhere close to being as despised as Isiah is right now.
I think people were rooting for the Mets to succeed despite Howe. Knicks fans actually WANT the Knicks to fail in order to expedite Isiah's demise.

What, no Iverson to the Nuggets talk?
The league's top two leading scorers on the same team. I wonder whose numbers are going to give?
This is going to be a VERY interesting experiment.

What really makes it interesting to me is that Iverson will have about 12 games to dominate the ball, THEN Carmelo comes back from the suspension (or fewer, if his punishment is reduced, but still).

That's exactly what I was thinking...if Iverson plants his flag in the next couple of weeks, Mello could be looking at some serious decline in ball-time when he returns.

BRISTOL, CONNECTICUT (TICKER) -- Former NBA player John Amaechi will declare he is gay in his book to be released later this month. Amaechi would be the first NBA player to publicly declare his homosexuality and join a very short list of males in professional team sports who have come out. The book is entitled "Man in the Middle" and is published by ESPN Books. Amaechi's declaration in the book was reported Wednesday on ESPN.com, and he will appear on ESPN's "Outside the Lines" on Sunday at 9:30 a.m. EST.

All star weekend this w/e. I don't know about you folks but I look forward to the weekend's festivities. Friday night is the celebrity game. Not sure who's playing this year but it's a real laugh seeing Ice Cube, Brain McKnight, and other various actors/rappers/singers try and play some full court basketball. Then on Saturday is the dunk contest, 3 point contest, skills competition and whatever else they decide to throw at us. Sunday is the actual all star game where no defense is played and players just try and outdo one another. It does make for a nice few hours of entertainment.

Former NBA center John Amaechi, who disclosed last week he's gay, said anti-gay comments by another retired player "demonstrate the need to continue the conversation." Retired Miami Heat guard Tim Hardaway said on a radio show Wednesday that he hates gay people, then later apologized for his remarks. "I don't need Tim's comments to realize there's a problem," Amaechi told The Associated Press in a phone interview Thursday. "People said that I should just shut up and go away -- now they have to rethink that." Hardaway's comments were sparked by Amaechi's disclosure he's gay. "You know, I hate gay people, so I let it be known. I don't like gay people and I don't like to be around gay people," Hardaway said while a guest on Sports Talk 790 The Ticket in Miami. "I'm homophobic. I don't like it. It shouldn't be in the world or in the United States." The host asked Hardaway how he would interact with a gay teammate. "First of all, I wouldn't want him on my team. And second of all, if he was on my team, I would, you know, really distance myself from him because, uh, I don't think that is right. I don't think he should be in the locker room while we are in the locker room." If he did find out that a teammate was gay, Hardaway said he would ask for the player to be removed from the team. "Something has to give," Hardaway said. "If you have 12 other ballplayers in your locker room that's upset and can't concentrate and always worried about him in the locker room or on the court or whatever, it's going to be hard for your teammates to win and accept him as a teammate."

Tim Hardaway is a fucking MORON!
Why do athletes somehow feel that shit that wouldn't fly for John Q Public in the corporate world should somehow be acceptable for them?
Do you think the kid who flips burgers could ask for the lettuce guy to be "removed" from the workplace because he's gay?
I also love it when people try to make some sort of point, but then illustrate their utter stupidity in the same sentence with a completely unrelated, yet stupid comment. Tim Hardaway states how he "hates" gay people, and then proceeds to tell us how homosexuality "shouldn't be in the world or in the United States." Oh, thanks for the clarification Tim, so would it sit with you a little better if it were only in the world, but not in the United States?
And why would he worry about Ameci on the court? What, is afraid that Ameci would try to blow him at the free-throw line?
What a moron!

You have the right to be an idiot. Hardaway is entitled to his opinion, even if most people don't agree with it. Tolerance works in every direction. Even people who make comments like that should be tolerated. You may not agree, but that's your right.

Hardaway's opinon is probably shared by a good percentage of athletes (former athletes, in his case), but why open yourself up to a shit storm by stating it publicly? No possible gain.
