My problem with Joba is that he's a walking Dr. Phil episode on the mound. He strikes someone out, he throws more fists than Mike Tyson in a fight. Last night, while it wasn't a sharp first inning, he gave up only one run. That was no reason to mope to the dugout swearing and then throw your glove like a child. That on top of his meltdown in the bugs last year, while Mariano and Carmona dealt with the situation like men. He needs to grow up.

He also had a temper tantrum when he came back into the dugout after being lifted from the game. The guy seems to have a bit of "head case" in him. Also, in all due respect I think its time for Dad to stay home. His Dad seem to add to Joba's mindset, up to and including the point where his Dad admitted they spoke "just before" Joba went to the mound. Can you focus, and stop making quick calls to Dad from the clubhouse phone?

And what's his Dad doing at the Stadium last night anyway? Wasn't he on his death bed six weeks ago?

Having competitive fire is not a bad thing. Let's not forget the guy is 22 years old and it was his first MLB start. There could have been nerves involved which affects control. It's one start, and it wasn't that bad.
Yes, the game was 9-3, but it was 3-2 in the 7th, and should have been 2-1 NY at that point before the bullpen blew it up.
Now that 62 pitches have been thrown, hopefully they will bump him to 80 and then to 100 plus like everyone else.

There could have been nerves involved which affects control Nerves? The guy has been in the majors for nearly a year now. Nerves, against Toronto, in June. Fantastic!!!! Yes, the game was 9-3, but it was 3-2 in the 7th, and should have been 2-1 NY at that point before the bullpen blew it up. Um, ever stop and think the only reason it was 3-2 in the 7th was cause Joba was OUT OF THE GAME?? If he stayed in, it may have turned into 11-2. What part of he pitched like shit did you miss last night? Now that 62 pitches have been thrown, hopefully they will bump him to 80 and then to 100 plus like everyone else. Hopefully they are better pitches than most of the ones thrown last night, which were horseshit.

It was his FIRST start and it was hyped like a playoff game.
You should have seen the crowd.
I had to yell at a guy who had a Joba For President sign. I felt like I was watching Steve Nebraska.

He's 22 years old. If you read any of the scouting reports on him, you would know he has top of the rotation potential. Yesterday was a first step in a new routine. You are not only a Negative Nancy, you're a Debbie Downer. You're better than that. I not only believe in Joba, I believe in Tom.

Damon's mad about the switch to starting!
From the Daily Snooze.
It didn't take long for the second-guessing to begin over Joba Chamberlain's move to the New York Yankees starting rotation.
Left fielder Johnny Damon was quoted in the New York Daily News as having some doubt about taking Chamberlain out of his set-up relief role, where he has been dominant, and making him a starter. Chamberlain went 2 1/3 innings on Tuesday night in his first start, a loss to the Toronto Blue Jays.
Asked point blank if he would send Chamberlain back to the bullpen, he said "You know what? It's not up to me. But I like winning ballgames," according to the Daily News.
However, while Damon did not explicitly say he opposed making Chamberlain a starter, he left little room for interpretation.
"I just felt like our bullpen was our strength," Damon said, according to the Daily News. "I think it still could be, but when you move a guy like that, everyone's trying to find a role. Everyone's trying to replace a guy who was possibly the best in that role.
"I remember the teams the Yankees won [championships] with, if they were winning after five innings, it was pretty much game over," Damon said, according to the report. "We kind of felt that way this year. If we were winning after six, we had [Kyle] Farnsworth in the seventh, Joba in the eighth, and Mariano [Rivera] in the ninth -- we thought it was game over.
"Now, instead, we're trying to find out who's best suited for that eighth-inning role."
Damon also compared moving Chamberlain from the bullpen to shuffling Derek Jeter out of the second spot in the batting order.
"You don't take Jeter out of the two-hole and put him in the seven-hole just because you're leaving the '4' and '5' guys on base," Damon said, according to the report. "You let him do what he does best."

Eh, I agree with some of his points, but the bullpen a strength? Joba and Mo aside, the bullpen has been brutal.

that's why to take 1/2 of the decent arms out and make them a 1/2 assed starter is assinine. You need 2 starters to cover Joba's role, him for 3 innings, and the guy to get to the 7th

Early returns are ok, but it would have been nice to see him get through the full 7 innings. Oh, and the fact that it was the punchless Pirates that he shut down was not lost to many either. Lets revisit this in the next few weeks when the Yankees start playing some good teams.

Johan Santana is averaging a little over 6.2 innings a start.
Same with CC Sabbathia. Yes, getting through 7 is nice. I want him to pitch a complete game.
But the bottom line is that he has done better and better, and does do what MLB starters do. High strikeout pitchers are going to have higher pitch counts.
Joba is still awaiting his first shelling. It will happen. Even so, the Yanks did the right thing, and the "blogosphere" can suck on an egg.

Another bang-up job by Chamberlain. Couldnt even get us 5 innings this time, but what do you expect when he goes 10 pitches a batter.
One of the knocks on him is if you stand around while he throws his "other stuff" that "other stuff" is going to drift out of the strike zone. Seems the batters made some adjutments, and he's off to the showers with a lot of game still to be played too many times....now its time for HIM to make some adjustments.

Yeah, like adjusting to setting up Mo in the 8th!

He'll be fine. He had no command whatsoever and STILL let up only two runs. And he was a lot better toward the end. Girardi should have let him pitch the fifth.

That's baseball. Hitters adjust to pitchers, who adjust to pitchers, and so on and so on and so on.

At over 90 pitches, and throwing so many of them out of the strike zone? Sorry, no.
