Thanks. I am pretty excited. Its been refreshing just loading my music into WMP in prep for this. After working with an MP3 player for so long (100-120 songs) and with my extensive collection just langushing in my CD cabinet, this has been due.
I reread every single post regarding this product on Amazon yesterday, and am really comfortable with it, and I was happy to see a pretty healthy contingent of my peers have used the Creative with high honors.

So there's a break in the action....my player may hold 60GB of stuff, but our DELL computer only holds....40! Ouchers!
I had no idea till I was burning CDs last Friday night (yeah, I live my weekends on the edge!) and I got a little plea to clear space cause I was running low. Basically the 4000 or so songs in the computer now took up 18GBs of whats in there.
So I have taken a break in the action and am waiting on a nifty 320GB external harddrive we have coming before I get back to work on things. My ultimate goal is to load our entire music collection into the computer/harddrive, and then most of that into the player, but there is no rush. I have gone this long without.

Why don't you just pull down the best songs on the CD? Unless you are abnormal, you can't possibly like every single song on every single CD, and would fastforward the bad stuff anyway.

Actually, you're right in that I dont plan on burning every song on every CD into the computer. But there are literally dozens of bands where I want every song archived and on my player. Those are the CDs I am ripping first. But as I get deeper into my collection, I am going to pick and choose tunes, yes. I know people who rip everything onto their player, and the song comes up and they grumble about it. Not me. Keep in mind I have literally hundreds of CDs. I may even top 1000.

Alrighty, here is an update on the scenario. Over the last week I burned a lot of my stuff to the computer (after getting an external hard-drive to help handle the load) - and with Dana's help loaded up the software, and then I started synching.
First night I started to synch I put about 3500 tracks on the thing. In about 3 hours. A lot of the stuff was listed/loaded into Windows Media twice (long story) so i had to spend some time deleting before pasting and synching band playlists. I then set up two playlists that first night using the software.
Bottom line, right now I have 3700 or so songs from 400 plus albums loaded. I started with 57GBs of space (there is some Creative stuff already loaded I will end up nixing) and after loading all that I still have around 37GBs left. I burned most of my regular CDs, at least the must burns. And yes, I ended up loading every song into the player, instead of cherrypicking like I said I would. I have the space, and I can always push next track if I am not in the mood to hear a tune.
Now I am going to go into my CD book of things i either had copied for me, stole online, or burned from others. That will double the intake on the player, but I will still have oodles of space.
I am happy I figured out the playlists, and look forward to making more (old-school trash, all things MAIDEN, live tracks, etc) and I am proud that I looked for a certain song from a certain album from a certain band and was able to find and start playing in under 10 seconds, after coming to grips with the controls.

Beats the shit out of the old days with a Walkman the size of a Nerf football and a dozen cassette tapes, doesn't it?

I had a first generation iPod and my wife had a 3rd generation iPod...but eventually encountered severe battery issues that we were unable to recover from.
That has left a stigma in my brain regarding iPods. I think they're shit!
Having said that, my wife bought whatever was the latest and greatest iPod last year (the black one with video capability) and she's had no issues with it at all.
Personally, I'm done with the little walkman type mp3 players. But I do plan to buy this cool car stereo I saw that plays mp3s and actually has a USB port AND a memory card port.

You should have nixed the Creative stuff first. Now it will be harder to find.

Tom, make sure that the Creative stuff you wanna kill are MP3's. There are some Driver software and Firmware files pre-loaded on there too.

I'll probably leave it all alone for now, actually. No reason, I got so much space and I dont see this stuff coming up anyhow.

So, after seeing someone in the office waving one around, I purchased one of those cylinder-looking external mics for my player. Debuting it today. I am interested to see how quickly the charge drains on my player going for a heap of hours straight through, and how quick the charge goes in the one "AA" battery inside the speaker.
I was content using my player on the 2 or 3 commutes in and out of the city I do for work, and during lunch when I want to zone out. But someone here pointed out an interesting factiod - for the money I spent on it, that may not be "getting my proverbial money back" from it. So I am going to throw the thing on here and there at the desk, with this external speaker. After all, I got 5599 songs inside the player I need to sift through.

Related note:
I purchased the 30 gig Zune from BigTimmay, and I am extremely satisfied. I have every CD I own, plus a majority of my vinyl on there and still have 23 gig left.
I have a few photo albums on there and my latest gag is video. I've captured video from Youtube and converted into mp4, and I've also converted a movie or two (Reno 911 and Borat).
I have a Belkin FM Modulator, and I can get quite some time out of a charge.

I'm shocked that your music collection only takes up 7 gigs. How many songs? I have 8035 mp3s on my 80gb iPod, which takes up about 30 gigs.

I have just under 5600, taking up the same 30 gigs. I have a lot of 10 minute "epic metal" tracks that give me less songs than Domi.
Seriously, Jackass, what are you rolling with there? Dana got a 4 gig and filled it within a month with less than 900 tunes, and that was just cherrypicking songs.

I'm not trying to brag here, but I think my music collection is in the range of 125 gigs. I have been waiting for an ipod that could hold all of it and finally the 160gb one can. Problem is i just got the iphone too, and picking the best 8gb to put on there... it was very difficult to pick and choose. That said, i probably won't get the 160GB iPod because the whole reason for iphone is to not have to carry your ipod and your phone. iPhone is awesome so far. Speakerphone is a little low, no voice activated dialing, but everything else is marvelous!

Ooooooo......scary stuff here!
The number of tracks on my player changes pretty much daily. Always adding this, that, or the other thing. Sunday night I threw 3 podcasts on there, and on the train ride home last night while listening to the last of them I noticed I had the demonic-tinged count of 6,666 tracks on my player. Positively devilish!
But thats not where it gets good. Podcast ends, I am about 5 minutes from my stop. So I hit random play, somewhat bemused about the number of tracks I had just noticed, and considering playing Maiden's "Number of the Beast" as a nod to such.
So, of all 6,666 tracks to play, which one comes up in random rotate?
"ACT VI - THE SIXTH SEAL"
Yes, an evil little track from the vampire/goth band Opera IX, and a fun little CD entitled "The Black Opera."
Go me!

I love the good old random play feature. In the last 30 minutes I went from Dropkick Murphys to Arch Enemy to Iron Maiden to M.0.D. to Rammstein to vampire-goth band Moonspell. And now Sculptured is playing, a metal band that incorporates TRUMPETS into the mix. Whoo hoo.

Question for anyone in the know...
We have been using a new computer for a couple of months now. For my 60GB Creative Zen, I had an organizer set up on the old one, where I was able to formulate my playlists and stuff. It did not carry over to the new computer (but my playlists are still in my Zen)
Here's the question. Can i download an organizer through the Creative website, hook up my player, and the current playlists will carry over in there and I can go back to what I was doing? Or do you think that if I download and hook up my player, it will empty it, or reformat it, or whatever.
I use Windows Media Player to add and delete songs. While it SHOWS my playlists, it shows them in a fade where they can not be accessed. Where this is becoming an issue is if I download a podcast that reads as "unknown" I can not locate it in my player, and I can not move it into a playlist on Windows Media. I used to be able to move it into a Podcast playlist to play on the player.
Any feedback will be appreciated, or opinions. Ask me questions in regards if none of this is clear. Thanks!

I was in the process of downloading the "Organizer" for the 60GB player, but went into a panic cause as I was doing it it read "importing files" and such. I did not have the player hooked up at the time, but I got nervous. I am afraid to hook up my player to an organizer, and somehow wipe the thing, and all 7400 songs on there (more than half of which are not saved to the computer)

i wish i could give a definitive answer, but these days i'm an ipod guy
i'm going to *guess* that the organizer will wipe out any playlists that you have, especially if all the content is on another computer. its that whole "backwards sharing" thing that they try to prevent. if that was allowed, i could plug my ipod into your computer and you could have my whole catalog free of charge
HOWEVER
if your actual MP3 files are stored on this new computer, then your playlists and whatnot SHOULD transfer over with the new software. you get that "unkown" message cause the comp cant find the actual file within the harddrive (either the player or computer, whichever is applicable)

also, as to the "importing files" message
most likely, when you install the creative software, it searches your hard drive looking for mp3 files to add to your library. thats probably what it refers to

I can tell you this, only half my music is in the new computer, cause I never backed it up. I'm a dope. When I hook up my player, I have access to all my music in the player, so I can delete stuff, or play in Windows Media while connected. HOWEVER - when I tried to import the 7400 songs from my player into Windows Media, it would not let me. There's that "protection" gag.
What confuses me is I guess if you set up a player on your computer, and your computer dies, you lose the right to use the organizer that came with said player (unless you back it up somehow)
I can live without the playlists, but its annoying to download podcasts into the computer now, be able to put them in my player, but not being able to find most of them once I have them in there.

yeah, it's important to back up every once in a while
there probably is a way to "hack" into your zen and get the files back in. let me poke around the net and see what i can come up with
there used to be this great fourm, nomadness.net, but they seem to be gone....

file this one under "it shouldn't be this easy"
when you plug in your nomad to your new comp, make sure no other programs are running. let the computer recognize the player. once that happens, go to the START menu, and click on MY COMPUTER. you should see the device listed. Double click, and it should open up into folders. one should be music files (generally the biggest size). instead of trying to import, simply COPY the file, go to MY DOCUMENTS (or the desktop, or wherever you put music files) and PASTE what you just found onto your hard drive. once that is done, disconnect the Zen
then open your organizing software, and update your library to include all the files you just copied over. when that is done, plug in your Zen
since you never changed any file names or ID3 tags, everything should sync back up as normal....
