It doesn't matter that you don't have an IPOD for that feature?

What feature? Im not followin...
All this setup is doing is playing what is working through my player into a radio on the desk, instead of chintzy little attachment speakers.

I just don't understand the iPod craze.
Why is it BETTER to buy an extremely proprietary piece of electronics.....an mp3 player that is NOT an mp3 player (convert your songs to a proprietary format unrecognizable by any software or hardware other than Apple products), uses only an isolated piece of software to upload songs to your device, is unable to share songs with other devices without "sneaky" back door methods....and costs significantly more.
MP3 is a universal format and any of these other MP3 players share that compatibility and offer a whole host of methods to get music from your computer to your device.
iPod has artificially pumped up it's own hype, and the consumer bought that crap hook, line, and sinker.

Yeah, including Balls.
Hey, Balls, go listen to some Billy Joel on your IPOD.

I don't have an IPod. I have had a Creative Nomad since you were still listening to tapes on your walkman. That makes me better than you.

Im currently backing up the music files in my player. I have crossed the 10,000 song threshold, I am sitting at a cool 10,100 or so. Still have 7 GBs left out of the 60, and once that tops off time to upgrade - whoo hooey!
I had a MAJOR scare the other night. I went to sync one track, a wrestling podcast of all things. Something went awry, I saw a spinning wheel, got a cryptic message that the "windows inspection was cancelled" and saw a flash that "NO SONGS SHOWING ON DEVICE."
Eh....my heart dropped....I thought somehow in seconds my 10 grand of tunage was zapped and emptied. In a panic I removed the player, and it was frozen. After a frantic seaerch for a pin, I hit reset and watched as it said "library is rebuilding." I called brother Dan in a panic, and he was like, "songs are probably there, in the rebuild" but my contention was they were possibly being ERASED in the rebuild.
To make a long story just a smidge shorter, everything was ok, and they were still there. Now is time to back them up, in case everything goes, and I lose my tracks somehow. I last did a rebuild a few months ago, when I believe I was at 8000 songs. Everything I added since would go in a crash, and I dont feel like doing mass burning of my collection again. Its been about 20 minutes and I am up to G (Graveworm) and its just plunging along.

So my go-to gift for my Dad has been cigars, he enjoys them, and it works for all involved. However, this Christmas I decided to go in a different direction, and picked him up a 2 gig SANSA MP3 player. My thinking was his new bike has an MP3 adaptor, for one thing. Moreso, I could load all his own music on it, so he could have it in one place.
So I let him open it on Christmas, and immediatly commandeered it, along with his small CD collection. I made sure all his CDs were burned on my computer, and then loaded them into the player. That size player is said to hold around "500 songs" but I think I ended up with more on here. I basically put all his own stuff on there, and played with the extra space.
I put some classic rock, mostly with a Southern / country tinge, as my Dad is an avowed country music fan. Stuff like The Outlaws, Skynyrd, Kansas. As my Dad enjoys Irish tunes, I put on some of the TAMER songs from bands like Flogging Molly, and I even snuck a Dropkick Murphys tune on there. The pirate band I see at the Ren Faire is on there, with their reworks of some Irish jigs. I tossed on some of Kid Rock's country-fed tunes, like "Lonely Road of Faith" and "Picture."
I showed him how to delete anything he does not like without having to hook into the computer, so its no harm, no foul. I just think its cool my Dad may hear some music he'll like, out of my collection. The man is over 60, this is his first MP3 player experience, lets hope its a good one.

I am still rolling with the 60 Gig, with about 7 left, and just over 10,000 songs on it. I think I will look to upgrade by summer, maybe as a birthday grab. Check you out with your 120 gigs!
Oh, little trivia note - Joe T is the one who first exposed me to the aforementioned Dropkick Murphys, by getting me one of their cassettes when he had a record company connection. And now I just put some on my Dads MP3 player! Thanks again, Joe T!

That "Do Or Die" record is absolutely fabulous. None of their other albums comes even close to that and the new singer sucks. They've become quite horrible but they are playing two NY dates in March. First night is sold out.
What song did you toss your dad? I hope it's Barroom Hero or Skinhead on the MBTA.

a few summers ago, i turned my dad onto Bela Fleck and the Flecktones. he gave it a listen and commented "wow, these guys are some real musicians"
it's great when you can turn your parents onto some good tunage

I just threw "Fields of Ahtenry" on there. I dont have many of their offerings on CD, but Blackout is one of them. Most of the better songs are admittedly buried on cassettes in my collection.

I had an old girlfriend whose Dad played guitar.
We were watching TV and he saw the signer of Green Day playing guitar...who notoriously hangs his guitar very low, almost down to his knees.
The Dad said, "anyone who hangs their guitar that low...you know they can't play worth a shit."

So, I found yet another option to cherrypick my music. I had noticed this from afar, and gazed at it fondly, like the shy guy eying the girl at the school dance.
Amazon.com MP3 downloads. Ranging from 79-99 cents each, some 10 minute ditties a bit over a dollar. There are SO many old albums of mine with gems on them, that i was either grabbing entire content used as CDs, or left em rotting on my wish list till I get rich. ' Well, now those songs I NEED are being downloaded directly into my Windows Media Player with a click, for 99 cents each.
Just now I downloaded "Poltergeist" from King Diamond, "Snap your fingers, snap your neck" from Prong, and "Chance" from Savatage. I own all these songs on cassette, and really had no major call to pick up the hosting CDs. But man I missed not having these tunes on my MP3 player.
But here they are!

Well, I could find none of the songs I ripped last night on Limewire, when were on there a couple of months ago. Since our computer had to be pretty much rebuilt (after some wretched scenarios many attributed to Limewire) we have not reinstalled that program. So Im pretty much in pay for music mode.
Bottom line, lots of what I listen to is not being passed around the masses. The songs I listed above are not exactly hidden tracks on rare B-Sides, no, but I could not find them using any nefarious means.
Im getting ready to download the entire "Dust" CD by doom merchants MOURNING BELOVETH. Any of you guys who have programs to swipe tunes, let me know if you can even find that. If so, I will reconsider my actions.

A Disease for the Ages is fantastic. I, um, bought that one, hard CD copy. Dont burn it, you'll hate it.
Vin, email me, show me the way, as they say! Although I dont spend nearly as much on music as people think....Hell, I dont have the money to even do so!

Ipod's dying?? Now I've heard everything. Ive been a Zune user for years and have never had one single problem with it.
I completely agree with Vinny. Torrents are the absolute way to go. None of that weird P2P shit, worrying about viruses or if you're even getting the right song. bah! The only problem with torrents , IMO, is that the best sites are all invite only, so you have to weasel your way into a lot of them. Unless Vinny knows some sweet public sites and isn't sharing??

i get everything from one of two bit torrent sites www.demonoid.com (excellent site. you have to register because it keeps track of your ratio, but i do not believe you need to be invited) www.isohunt.com (great search engine that links to other torrent trackers)
