Balls, in regards to the battery thing, thats just about all of these players, including my old Creative Zen. Domi, Im sure that is what Cho meant, that the ITunes library sort of restricts you on how you store your music, and what you can invariably do with it.
Jackass, Ill touch base with you on the social aspects of the ZUNE, I am just finishing up stacking mine up. Im very happy with things so far, especially having software again and being able to edit content and screw around with playlists...when our last computer died, my software for the Zen went with it, and since then I have been landlocked. Ive also restricted myself to audio podcasts....I think you mentioned some vids before...shoot me some recommendations, let me see what this is all about, Sir.

Did I download the right software? There seemed to only be one choice, but this is not even close to as userfriendly as my Nomad software.

You probably did. Its as easy as anything one can imagine. I was just going to give you a tip on how to sync what you wanted in the finest fashion, but its easy enough.

Yes, Domi, but doesn't the sheer act of loading audio files on to your iPod through iTunes, convert them to some proprietary apple format? I'm almost sure this is the case.
Look for me, I don't need a fancy interface, I don't want to download software, I don't need to watch video on a tiny-ass screen...I just want a compact portable way to carry my music around.
I got a 50 dollar Insignia mp3 player....holds about 500 songs or so (I surely don't need my entire music library on short plane ride jaunts, 3 and 4 days trips, etc...). It's about the size of pack of Wrigley's gum, and it has a USB plug....I plug it into my computer, drag and drop my mp3s on to it (no software installed or anything like that) and I'm off. What could be better...compact, no muss, no fuss.
I just don't see what's cool about paying several hundred dollars for an ipod contraption that's going to require this learning curve in getting used to the interface, require software to be installed, requiring this whole rigmarole in hooking the thing up to your computer, starting the software, letting the thing synchronize .... I feel like I'm paying MORE for MORE inconvenience. I ditched my second generation iPod years ago, and am not looking back. But fair is fair....I'm not about to get a Zune either....basic, bare-bones mp3 player is perfect for me. Of course, I'm also the only guy I know with a cel phone that pretty much makes calls, takes calls and that's it.

This is absolutely not the case. I hear you on the "learning curve" and additional software and stuff, but any decent player is like that, and I didn't find the iPod difficult at all (and it's definitely not inconvenient). I was a long-time holdout, but they were really the only company to make a product with a large enough (80g, when I was looking to buy) hard drive when I was in the market for a new player, and I have no complaints. I'm anal enough that I do need my entire library with me at all times, so I can't go the route you did.

Do you Zune people have issues with songs that seem to just vanish?
I see them on the software, but not on the player, even though it says they are on the player. Can't find them by name.
Plus, certain songs I edit on the software, but the changes don't seem to happen on the player.

Maybe some Zune user can figure this one out...
When I look under genre for a song, the songs are organized by ALBUM, not song title, and I can't really see the song title unless I shuffle the songs and go to the Now Playing List.
On my Creative Nomad, they were logical, and I was able to see the SONG TITLE within the genre.
Is that possible on a Zune, or am I screwed because some programmer is a moron?

So I made what amounts to a big lifestyle change....I swapped the radio on my desk in the city office - which contained preset button radio options and a CD / Cassette player, for a more mini dial-radio unit, with a plug-in for my MP3 player. Way I see it is I am now in the city office 4 days a week. While I had time riffing through my old cassettes here, and going station to station with a button push, I now have over 15,000 songs on my MP3 player. This gives me a Hell of a chance to listen to stuff I just dont have time to listen to at other times. This radio was in the LI office, but at most I was there 4-5 times a month, now its less.
Yesterday I blasted through 4 less-listened to CDs before lunch, and right now Im enjoying some GRAVE DIGGER.

OK, I'm loving my new iPhone.
Terrestrial radio is really boring the shit out of me, so I've gotten on the podcast kick. They have everything out there. On tap for todays listening pleasure:
"Today's AA Speaker: Mr. Tom Waits" "Jim Clancy at OSII Recovery" (another AA speaker) Ska Skank Radio: episodes 1, 2, 4, and 18 "NYT: Times Talks presents Iggy Pop" 5 episodes of "Rock N Roll Geek Show" featuring interviews with a Ramones tour manager, a remembrance of Lux Interior, record review of Dee Dee (Ramone) King's rap album "The Point Is" interview with Henry Rollins about the Black Flag days "NPR Radio Live Concerts: Tom Waits" "Channel 93.3 Interview w/ Mike Ness" "Baseballs Greatest Hits: A Tribute to Phil Rizzuto'

Zunes are ok, but sometimes they really piss me off. For example, every once in awhile, usually when I'm on vacation, for no reason whatsoever, if I try to play a song, I get a message that says, "the item is missing or can't be played."
Most of the time to fix this problem, you press the back button and the down direction key at the same time. That's the equivalent of CTRL ALT DELETE, and reboots the thing.
But sometimes, that doesn't work. When it doesn't work, you have to take all the files off the Zune and put them all back from scratch.
It's not a big deal if you have access to your computer and the backup, but it's still a pain in the ass.
It happens every few months, including during my last 2 vacations.
It sucks.
