The fun never ends!
Walkman John sent me this....
suspension makes Ramirez the biggest star penalized under baseball's testing program that started in 2003. By Bill Shaikin and Dylan Hernandez Times Staff Writers 8:35 AM PDT, May 7, 2009 Manny Ramirez has tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs and will be suspended 50 games starting today, The Times has learned.
The test result and suspension is expected to be announced later today. The Dodgers informed triple-A outfielder Xavier Paul this morning that he was being promoted to Los Angeles.

I predict that ownership will seek the right to void or pro-rate player's contracts for drug violations in the next collective bargaining process.

LA TIMES:
In an appearance at USC last month, Jose Canseco said Ramirez's name "is most likely, 90%" on a list of 104 players that failed a drug test in 2003. The players were promised anonymity for taking tests in 2003; Rodriguez is the only player that has been identified among that group.

Jose Canseco--right again.
He's approaching Abraham Lincoln levels in the credibility department.
The good news is that Boston's 2 championships are as tainted as the Yankees' 2000 ring.
This suspension will cost Manny, assuming the paycheck is over a 162 game season, $7,716,049.38 .
Yes, the suspension IS without pay.

Yet more proof that players DO NOT get better with age.
Where does that $8M go? Does LA keep it?

I would think that yes, LA would keep it.
They SHOULD keep it.
What I wonder about is how does this affect luxury tax if a team lost a player like that and paid it.
If say, LA paid luxury tax, would they also save another $3 million?

Manny, ARod, Pudge, Kevin Brown, Ankiel, Schoenweis, Gagne, Ron Villone, Sheffield, and probably a few more I can't remember. All Boras clients/cheaters

I wonder how the Boston chowder heads are going to defend this. Nobody will defend it. If I was MSB I'd say "There's no proof he did it while with Boston", but any idiot would know he was doing it the whole time. I'd dare say NY still has/had a bigger steroid problem however. This is the first member of Boston to be busted & well - he's been out of Boston for a year.

It will be defended. But you bring my name into it as if I have defended Yankee roid users that way. Name one that I haven't railed on.
Clemens, Pettitte, ARod. All of them. Fuck them all.

I'm hearing he tested positive for Clomid, a female fertility drug. Either he's trying to be Octo-Manny-Mom, or he's taking something to mask anabolic steroids

I don't believe the guy's been clean all this time, nor do I believe he's clean now.
Well, he has apparently passed around 15 drug tests in the past 5 years. Is the testing so sketchy its easy to pass, when you are using? I know growth hormone cant be found, but other stuff can. Its funny how he is suspended, but A-Rod, Clemens, Bonds - none failed a test.
I think the fact he is not appealing and said flat-out he has been asked not to really comment now is telling.
Peter Gammons was on ESPN practically in tears, fervently defending Manny. He must have a man crush, or a gay one. I mean, he was really defending him hardcore.

he didn't test positive for roids...he tested positive for a fertility drug used to mask anabolic steroids

seperate rumblings that he failed 2 tests this year, (radio)
and that he knew it was coming last night, when he hit a big 3 run double to blow open the game, he just got to 2nd and stood there. No celebrating, primping and or preening (From MLB Network)

The drug is not used to mask anabolic steroids.
The fertility drug is used to re-start the natural testosterone production in the body. The body shuts down natural production when taking steroids, because it is obviously coming from another source.
One thing about this...this positive test had to happen a while ago. When the positive tests pop up, they don't get suspended the next day. It is conceivable that he knew about this even before the season started. It's also conceivable that teams knew about it, which may be why they didn't want to pay him. I wonder if even the Dodgers knew, and figured he would be back by July anyway, so let's sign him, because we'll get money back anyway.
Either way, another one gone.

I dont think they knew going that far back. Honest? If Manny knew, he simply would not have come back, and not tarred whatever "legacy" he has. Best right-handed bat we have seen in the last 15-20 years? Most likely. If he knew this storm was coming (and from all accounts he is devestated) he would have stayed home and pretended no one would meet his demands. And none would be the wiser.
