Damon is clearly overvaluing his worth, which means he probably wouldn't have accepted arbitration. If he did, then the $13 million off the books for Matsui would help alleviate it, and even if he got $15 million, that's a $2 million raise and an $11 million loss on the total payroll. Plenty of room to work with. Ultimately, the team doesn't let money get in the way of winning, and even without Matsui coming off the books, the worst thing that happens is you have Damon for one more year.
I don't think Damon accepts arbitration, and if he rejects it, teams are less likely to sign him because they want to keep the draft picks.
I understood not wanting to pay Abreu, but Damon is a far more valuable player. If Bay gets a 5 year deal, 3 for Damon is not out of the question.
I think that the Abreu deal is fair. I hope they get that done.

Abreu had a better year than Damon did, and frankly is a better player. Look at his OBP it is off the charts.

Damon's defense is not very good, but I would rather have him in the OF than Abreu any day. Abreu has no heart. None of the intangibles.
Their years were not that different with the bat.
Abreu: AVG: .293, OBP, .390, SLG--.435 15HR, 165 hits, 29 doubles, 103 RBI. 113 Ks, 94 walks.
Damon: AVG: .282, OBP: .365 SLG--.489 24 HR, 155 hits, 82 RBI, 36 doubles, 71 walks, 98 Ks.
Damon's power numbers are higher, and if he hit in the same spot in the Angels lineup, presumably, he would have had more RBI. Different roles. Damon was a table setter that went above and beyond. Abreu was the RBI guy.
The numbers are comparable, as are the ages. Abreu is not a better player than Damon. The slight differences in hitting are more than made up by the intangibles, which Abreu lacks. I don't see Abreu bolting for third base like Damon did in the World Series, even if he had the same level of speed. Abreu would be too worried about getting hurt.
The tangibles are close, and the intangibles favor Damon. No question I would take Damon if I had to choose.

So I hear from 3 sources that the Yankees are looking at Nick Johnson as a possible DH. The sources are Fox5, and Sheriff Tom (who counts twice because he's plumpy due to his life of leisure).
Major story in the POST on it today, it looks likely.
I also initially read the report from noted baseball sage Jayson Stark.
Move makes sense, Johnson would be willing to sign for a year, and a lot of the money would be INCENTIVE based, regarding around games played. So if he gets hurt, he wont make a lot of cheddar.
Offensively he would do the same things Damon would. This move would be absolutely fine, even if I am not a big Johnson fan. He is what he is, and he would suffice for what they want, at the money and years they want.

He would do similar things with the BAT, but he can't run like Damon, and with Tex at 1B, is pretty useless defensively.
I wouldn't HATE it, but Damon is preferable by far.

My thoughts exactly. It'll be great to finally see Jeter and Johnson turning the double play.

I'm actually mad at him. I was going to make that joke once a signing became official.

I think it's a good idea. Get Damon out now, sigh Johnson for the year. and the 2010 crop of FA's is going to be the junk, the good junk. Works out nicely.

Well, no matter what, the 2010 team is simply not as good as the 2009 team. They didn't improve the pitching at all, and the lineup isn't as good. The OF defense is better though. Ultimately, we will find out how much above the pack the Yankees were. It's very possible they've come down to the level of the rest of baseball, and could find themselves having a much tougher time repeating than they did peating.

As was the case when he was a Yankee previously, I still think Nick Johnson looks like "Pvt. Pyle" from Full Metal Jacket:

I'd imagine the "Bleacher Creatures on the Subway with Nick Johnson" picture is being posted ad nauseum about now.

No doubt. My computer being down at home is the only reason it hasn't graced the top of this board. I'm Nick Johnson's best friend you know.

I'd rather them just sign Sheets and take a chance on him as the #4 but......
Yankees After Javier Vazquez By Howard Megdal [December 22 at 8:08am CST] 8:17am: Joel Sherman of the New York Post tweets that the Yankees are working to re-acquire Javier Vazquez. The Braves have "always liked" Melky Cabrera and Nick Swisher, Sherman says.

Heyman says the Yankees will acquire Vazquez and Boone Logan for Melky Cabrera, Mike Dunn and a prospect.

Eric Hinske to the Braves...
I sure hope he goes into the Hall of Fame as a Yankee.

It's a sad process when championship teams get their best assets stolen away.

How much do you wanna bet we see these other teams treat guys like Duncan and Melky the way they deserve to be treated - as benchwarmers!

Duncan was a benchwarmer here too.
Melky was not a benchwarmer here for a reason, and they won a championship with him in CF.

Yes, they won a championship WITH him in CF...hardly BECAUSE of him in CF.

Yankees In "Serious Talks" With Hairston By Mike Axisa [January 9 at 7:04pm CST] The Yankees are in serious talks with free agent utility man Jerry Hairston Jr., according to a tweet by ESPN's Chris Singleton. New York has "serious interest" in Hairston, and would use him to spell Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez, as well as possibility platoon in left.
