It's amazing how many times Tom cites how the baseball blogosphere "laughs" at the Yankees, yet the Yankees end up in the playoffs. Say what you want about Montero, but the "baseball blogosphere" really doesn't know shit.

I'd be OK with Montero going in a package of some sort for Upton....

Upton is the type of player that you SHOULD trade a Montero type prospect for. He's 23, and signed for 5 years.

Jeter allegedly turned down a 3 year, $63 million offer from the Yanks. I think that's insane. The Yanks should not blink on the 4th year. Let Jeter get a 4 year, $84 million contract somewhere else.

He isn't even getting 3 year $63M anywhere else..I have said all along if he wants 4 years have some sort pf performance option for the 4th year with a buyout so there is some sort of protection in case he tanks real bad...

He wouldn't get 3 years $45 million anywhere else. The Yankees should take a hard line here.

AT LAST! A MOVE!
Yankees trade Juan Miranda to the Diamondbacks for minor league RHP Scott Allen.
I hope Juan Miranda goes into the HOF as a Yankee.

This Jeter thing gets me more mad every day. Today the Daily News is reporting that Jeter is seeking 5-6 years at $20 million per year. He basically says the two sides are about $50 million apart.

I've heard 4 years, Balls.
Now assuming the 4 yrs is accurate (maybe it's not) are the Yankees really going to quibble over 1 year, considering that they hand out far too lengthy contracts to pitchers like free soup for the homeless at Christmas time?
I know what you said in your Tweet, Balls - no affirmative action in baseball. But seriously, you've said yourself that you think Jeter can continue to be a .300/200-hit guy - I'd give Jeter a better chance of remaining effective for 4 years than I would have given AJ to remain effective for 5!

Giving him six years would be the worst waste of money by this club in a long time.

The Yankees don't seem to want to go 4 years. And they shouldn't. I think the THIRD year is the bonus year that he deserves for the service, and even THAT is a stretch.

I don't think, under any circumstances whatsoever, would the Yankees consider 6 years, nor do I think Jeter would expect them to.
Doesn't hurt for him to ask for 6, but I don't think that's a realistic expectation at all.
4 is perfectly acceptable.

Not when you factor in his 2010 and the fact that he probably wouldn't get more than 2 years on the open market.

You don't think the Mets or the Dodgers would give Jeter 4 years if they thought he'd even entertain it? Come on.

Really? What a sick freak!
And he's married!
Look, from what I've read, if he weren't Derek Jeter, he'd be offered a 1 year deal around $7 to $10 million. Maybe, because he's Derek Jeter, he would get 2 years, $20 million somewhere.
But ONLY the Yankees would go 3 years, and especially 3 years at $45 million.
Think about this--you're the Dodgers. You have $80 million to spend on a 4 year deal. Do you really spend it on another team's 37 year old SS who has no real power and coming off his worst season? With limited range?
Do I think Jeter can have a Jeterian year? I do. I also think he can do it for 2 years. A third year is a reward. I'm not convinced he has truly hit his decline. Could have just been an off year. But 4 years? I would let him walk.

While that is very high, there's a big difference. Rivera is still producing at Rivera levels. Plus, Rivera isn't being as ridiculous as Jeter, with extra years. It's not nearly as appalling. The Yanks are also not offering Rivera double his worth.

2 years 30 - 31M
or 1 year $16-$17M (give him a little more to take 1 year deal)
Based on last year and him earning $15M he isn't or shouldn't take a cut.....at worst he's gotta get the same...

Rivera is still performing near his prime. At his prime, Jeter was never one of the best hitting shortstops in the league.

Sure he was. Jeter at his prime, is a HOF shortstop. I still think he has a .300 season left him. How many SS' outhit him? ARod? Sure, but ARod is a freak. Nosemar? Where is he now? Tejada? Steroids. Even so, the list is small. Out of 30 SS', Jeter was always in the top 3 hitting SS' in the game. That's why he was the megastar.

Enough is enough already with this Jeter BS!!! C'mon $45mil over 3 years for an aging, db threat, rally killer, 1st ball swinger SS @ 37?? I love Jeter @ his prime, but this is getting crazy for signing these guys for past performances!!! Jeter is gonna be more like the Jeter we just saw, @ 37 there is NO BOUNCE back year!!! Hanley Ramirez, best SS currently makes $11 mil per year, Jeter should bet an extra 4 - $7 mil based on years past??? Plese, only reason we won last Banner wasn't due to Jeter, but A-Rod made his bones!!! I could care less about A-Rod and his contract was worthless, but at least he'll produce 30-100 year end year out!! We all talk about diminshing qualities with A-Rod but he missed how much time and his numbers are still at the top of list for 3B'men! AJ was a bad contract, but at least he's young enough ........errrrrr relatively young in Yankee age to correct his isssues. Paying a soon to be 37yr old SS for 6 yrs is dumb....I'm also on the stance that we let C LEE walk for anything over 4 years....pay them per year, but don't give them the length...alla AJ & POSUCKA

It's amazing to me how many Yankee fans are siding against Jeter here, including me. It's nice to see that most Yankee fans seem to realize that the Yanks are not lowballing him by any stretch, and that Jeter and his agent are being dicks.

I don't disagree with the Yankees position and think the reported offer is more than fair. I don't understand, however, why they are doing this in the press. Why risk alienating Jeter or forcing him to spite the Yankees for pride. Also, by highlighting his shortcomings they are damaging his and their brand. All stupid. They have the leverage and are using it. They might just be cutting their nose to spite their face.

Jeter's agent started the press bullcrap with his statement about being "baffled" by a three-year, $45M offer. I wish someone would fucking baffle me like that.

I think the Yankees set the tone and got the rhetoric going with Hal's "it could get messy" opening salvo. Then "it's not personal" and "we are paying you for a ball player not marketing". It is all just a little slimy. I don't disagree with the see if you can do better stance, but why be so public about it? I don't see what it gets them. I am with his agent and find their aggressive media posturing "baffling".
