Also talk that the Yankees are interested in Justin Duscherererererer. I'd be ok with that, since it would be low risk, and when the guy is actually healthy, he's solid.

Ok, so it's January 13, 2011, and the biggest offseason new acquisition is Russell Martin--the catcher with the broken hip who is recovering from knee surgery.

Ask and ye shall receive, although $12M per year for Soriano is a bit much, IMHO.

Who cares about the $$$ if he can be even close to shut down as he was last year!!! This really soldifies the bullpen and makes the games shorter which is what the Yanks need with that pithcing staff of CC and hope for rain! I think it was a good move by Cashman to go off his stance on the type of draft it will cost, they need to compete now with the Sox. It's also some insurance if MO who is 40 has any ailments or needs to take a break towards the end of the season. I think this signing tells us that Andy isn't coming back; though we could all hope!!!

It is a ridiculous amount of money when you consider that there was no demand for the guy.
But Pags is right--if he produces, it'll help big time. It just sucks that we only have 1 real starter, 1 potentially good starter, and one piece of crap that we hope regains his form. Then we have 2 openings and no one to fill them. Sergio Mitre isn't going to cut it.

The crappy offseason continues as we sign Andruw Jones. I'm sure Boston is happy.

Andruw Jones, Bartolo Colon, Mark Prior, and now Freddy Garcia?
The Yankees have become a haven for hasbeens.

As I said to Tom on Twitter, I believe Oil Can Boyd is next.

This off season can only be salvaged if Andy returns than things wouldn't look so bleek. If Andy returns, BIG IF but than hopefully AJ can return to 1/2 way what he was in his last year in Toronto & 1/2 of his 1st season in Pinstripes we are ok. Garcia is a much better option than Vasquez was and Martin if he can return to health is a much better option behind the plate than Cervilli and Posada. Soriano at the back end was an upgrade. I know th Sux got exponetially better on paper, still not sold how well an African American Super Star fairs in Boston. It's been years since it's happened and I know Adrian Gonzalez is a star but he's used to playing in the NL Worst and is coming off shoulder issues. J.D. Drew is done, Pedroia is playing with a plate in his foot & Youkillis is coming back from surgery and is moving back to 3B where he's a drop from Lowell or Beltre. We talk about their pitching but Beckett is equivalent to AJ and Lackey wasn't great. I may be delusional but I don't see that big of a disparity if Andy comes back!! If he doesn't.....than it's a different story!!!

I don't think Garcia IS better than Vazquez. He has had ONE year where he was almost healthy since 2006, and still only pitched 150 innings.
I also don't think the Sox are exponentially better on paper. I think the AL East took a hit. If the Sox win, it won't be because they are so much better than in 2009, it'll be because the Yanks and Rays are worse.

Terrible. At a point when the team needs him the most, he walks out. It's a shame that's my final memory of Andy Pettitte.

Eh--the Yanks had some responsibility there. They took him for granted, and even though they offered more money, they did it after he gave his word to Houston.
This is different.

This is a BS move on Andy....blah blah blah abou the kids, the kids are the one's that wanted him to play. 1 more great year, he's a fringe HOF. The time the team could use his loyalty to the brand, he leaves. Pitching staff in disarray.....well, over the next few years, these guys that we've grwon up with, ideolized and lived on every play with are going to be going down this road. This year, it's Andy next year more than likely Posada, year after that Mo and 1 day that kid from Kalamazoo that we all loved and called the "kid" it's gonna be his turn what a sad era that will be departing from those hallowed Halls. We as fans can only hope we have some taltent to give us a fraction of what we've had these past 15 years; are we spoiled? Absolutely but our riches aren't what we've paid to lure players but it's the ones that grow up threw the Systems are the guys that hurt when thy leave. Well, a fond ado to you Andy, best wishes and stand strong in the perjury trial v Clemons; might have been easier if you had your brother's support evey 5 th day to get your mind off of it.

It's not spoiled to want to win. If anything, a sign of being spoiled is if you don't care anymore.
Like you said, Pettitte is walking away when he's productive, and when his team needs him the most. It sickens me.
It's not the same as Posada, who could go because he's no longer producing. Pettitte is needed badly.
This decision likely cost the team 10 wins.

Andruw Jones, Bartolo Colon, Mark Prior, and now Freddy Garcia? The Yankees have become a haven for hasbeens. Add Eric Chavez to the has-been list.
