Well, this is the time when we speculate as to who will be back.
Here are some people coming off the books and their salaries in millions.
Jeter $22.6 Rivera--$15 Pettitte--$11.75 Vazquez--$11.5 Berkman--$14.5 Wood--$11
You have to figure they will do everything they can to get Jeter, Rivera and Pettitte back. Rivera will probably make the same money. Pettitte might actually get a raise. Jeter will have to take a pay cut.
No one in baseball is going to give Derek Jeter $22.6 million. I don't see Vazquez back at all.
I also doubt the Yanks will pick up the Wood and Berkman options.
I'd love to see Kerry Wood back in pinstripes, but I don't see $11 million for an 8th inning guy. I'd be surprised.
I'm hoping that they manage to improve the team through an unexpected trade. Free agents are not the only way to go, though they are the quickest.
If Pettitte is back, I think they need 2 starters. Lee is the top priority. But if they don't get him, and I'm not fitting him for pinstripes yet, then 2011 is going to be a long season without a big time trade.
There's no room in the infield assuming Jeter comes back.
They need a number one catcher.
Jorge can't do it anymore. My hope is that unless a good trade comes along, Jorge and Montero will share the catching and DH duties.
That will mean the Yanks will have the worst defense in baseball at the catching position, but this kid needs to get to the bigs, and in theory, Romine will develop in AAA with Montero with the big club. Hopefully.
If that happens, Romine and Montero will be in the 2012 lineup.
Outfield is where the team can use some real help.
Swisher, Granderson and Gardner are not a championship outfield.
I'm not a Jayson Werth fan. He's only worth getting if they can dump Swisher somewhere.
Swisher should have trade value given his numbers and salary. We can sure get more from him in return than a Wilson Betemit.
I love Gardner's speed and ability to take pitches. His defense is good too. I'd love to get rid of Granderson as well. He would also have trade value--preferably more than an Austin Jackson, though I doubt it.
I don't know who's available by trade. But I guess we'll find out soon enough.
I heard the Royals might trade Greinke, but I read an article on him that makes me hope they stay away. Very good pitcher, but not everyone is right for the Bronx.

The said reality of this team is that they are just flat out old and many signed to very hearty contracts! A-Rod still has like 5 years remaining on that deal and he is a shell of himself, Tex didn't have a stellar year, wow AJ still has 3 years left on his deal, Jorgie still has a fat contract for 1 year and is just terrible in all facets of the game and the pink elephant in the room is what to do with Jeter??? Does he realize he's a diminishing asset or does he just look at this as 1 bad year??? They def need some pitching help in the rotation and in the bullpen. Robertson is brutal, trade Joba while he still may have some value not sure what value and need to resign Kerry Wood. Main objective is to try and lure Cliff Lee here with the $$ they save on Vasquez. What an embarrassing way to end the season.

Arod hit .270 30HR and drove in 125. I wouldn't complain too much about it. But I agree the years left are ridiculous.
AJ was a dumb signing and it has to be sucked up.
Jeter needs to stay, but they have to be smart. He's not going to make $22 million next year and he shouldn't.
At best, he's a $10 million guy, and that's stretching it based on his age and 2010 season.
What I think he SHOULD do is look in the mirror, realize he's made $189 million from the last contract, which is more money than he can ever spend, and doesn't even include millions in endorsements. He should realize that he needs the Yankees as much as they need him, and maybe even more.
Then he should sign a 1 year deal, and do what Pettitte does year to year. I bet he can get $15 million in a 1 year deal, and that's about double what he's really worth.

Derek Jeter is not taking a 10-15 mil one year deal. No fucking way.

I'm not saying that's what WILL happen. I'm saying that's what SHOULD happen.
If he wants a 5 year, $100 million deal, the Yanks need to walk away.

Some talk about Zack Greinke being on the block. Great year in 2009, not so good in 2010. Some say part of the reason was because he basically gave up because KC sucks. He's a little young to have a down year.
I'm not sure I want the Yanks to go get him even if they have a match. I've read that he was once out of baseball because of depression. In other words, he's a mental headcase. Plus, he has a limited no trade clause that included the Yankees. Why get a guy who doesn't want to come here and mentally can't handle it?
I am curious who is out there to be had via trade. Last year, every single new person sucked. The only one who exceeded expectations was Mr. Thames.

Greinke has said that he doesn't want to come to either NY or Boston due to his fragile state of mind!! Who wants him in NY to see him crap and be unproductive!! Bottom line Yanks need to do whatever to get Lee and beg/borrow/cry for Andy to return cuz after CC that rotation is crap!! AJ is a head case and still on the books for 3 years, Hughes I have no faith in his bloatted 18 wins....that guy throws STRAIGHT fastballs!!
This whole Jeter thing is gonna turn ugly. Do we really think Jeter is gonna take some type of pay cut??? Use their valuable trade chips and turn it into something, Joba, Swisher, AJ, Granderson and/or Gardner for something of worth. They got Javy's 15 million coming off the books and seriously somebody tell Posada to try, just try to get into some type of shape. What a worthless contract that's turned out to be. P.S. Please somebody tell A-Rod, power hitting 3B are suppossed to hit Homers!!!
This team so underachieved this year and still had the opportunity to possibly repeat if it weren't for frantic Joe The Binder making terrible decisions. I hope he doesn't come back, he overmanages and over thinks......F' em

I can't imagine Jeter legitimately believing that he should get $23 million at this stage in his career.
He may have pride, but he's not delusional.
This is Jorge's final year.
AJ is not a trade chip. He's a Yankee until the last dollar is paid.

What kind of "private" reasons did Dave Eiland get released for? Already, that is an improvement for the pitching staff.

Jeter is a savy business guy and realizes he needs the Yanks as much as they need him..I would look for something in the 3 year $40-45M range........He is not going anywhere..Mo comes back at the same (maybe pushes for 2 year deal while he can and he should get it) and Pettite probably gets a bump up a couple milion to $13M range for a year....Greinke doesn't want to come here so forget it.....Do the Pirates have anyone we need so we can give them Swisher...LOL
If we can get Wood and pay a little extra for him to accept being the 8th inning guy and not closer great. I would look for the Yanks to carry 3 catchers (Unless Cervelli gets deallt) and have Montero work in with Jorge and also DH...

I think Cervelli's days are numbered. Montero, no matter how bad he is, will be a catcher. I expect him, if he's still here, to split time with Jorge. That's 2 catchers. And Tom actually thinks Romine would be the backup if it comes to it.

The whole "private" thing pisses me off.
It may sound arrogant, but Brian Cashman has to answer to Yankee fans. This isn't some private Mom and Pop business that you can do what you want to behind closed doors. Yankee fans want to know that there's some accountability and that the brass has our best interest in mind. Like it or not, we the fans, are the driving force of this organization - we buy the tickets, the t-shirts, the cable packages, the DVDs, the jerseys, the $8 beers at games, etc.
Brian Cashman starts pulling this "private" shit and it grades on my nerves. Now, if Eiland needed to be dismissed for his own private (i.e. family) reasons, then say that - "Personal issues would have made it difficult to attend to this duties as Pitching Coach" or something to that effect. (Mark Feinsand seems to feel that the firing IS related to personal issues, same issues that caused Eiland to take personal leave during the season."
But don't fuckin' brush me (the fan) off with "My reasons are private" AKA "It's none of your business, Yankee Fan."
Prick!

It's hard NOT to imagine that Eiland is gone because of the reasons he left earlier in the season. I doubt even a championship couldn't have saved his job.
I'm starting to warm up to the idea of signing Jayson Werth, assuming we can trade Swisher. I'm not the biggest fan of Werth because he strikes out too much, but if he were signed and performed to his career numbers during the contract, it would be a good move. He's also much better suited to play RF than Swisher. I've read his defense is pretty good, but given that Swisher's is pretty bad, it would be an upgrade.

Balls - of all major leaguers who qualified, Jayson Werth has the lowest batting average with RISP....and with RISP & 2 outs it gets even worse.
I'm definitely a proponent of upgrading Swishers spot, but not with Werth.

I don't worry too much about that. Those RISP numbers are from 2010. His lifetime numbers are fine. Cano was horrific with RISP last year, and he turned that around.
There's no RF free agent this year that's better. Not sure about the following year. I also don't know if there's anyone available via trade, which I would love to see.

I wonder, should the Yanks land Cliff Lee, will there be any motivation to unload Burnett?
I would think, with all the media coverage of Burnett's failings, that any trade partner with the Yanks would be dealing from a power position. Yanks would most likely need to eat much of his salary, and take little in return. More a case of addition by subtraction.
I've been wrong a lot of Yankee deals, but this is not one of them. I was against Burnett and still am. He is the Mike Mussina of the current team - a mental and emotional weakling wrought with inconsistency.

Yanks decline options on Lance Berkman, Nick Johnson, and Kerry Wood. I guess without Wood, Johnson has no purpose.

Post by Chris on Oct 27, 2010 16:33:30 GMT -5
This baffles me.
Berkman and Johnson I understand.
Kerry Wood has at least another year left of performing the way he did for the Yanks. 11 million is not a bad option considering how long the Yanks have been tinkering, unsuccessfully, with the bridge to Mo.

True, though it's a LOT for an 8th inning guy. I'm guessing they want to add years, with a lower salary. Or, they talked to him, he wants to close elsewhere, and they are letting him go.

I'm not too worried about the TOP players aging. Jeter and A-Rod will still be upper echelon (maybe not THEE best) at their respective positions for another 2, MAYBE 3 seasons.
Really, I mean this IS a 95 win team and will remain close to that for at least another 2 seasons.
I think that a defensive/offensive upgrade in RF and middle relief help are in order - need a BIG bat in the outfield again like there was in the Sheffield, Bernie, Strawberry, O'Neill days.
Mariano is still highly effective. I've been saying this for years - his mechanics are so simple that he is not injury (leg, arm or otherwise) prone. He can pitch with effectiveness until he's mid 40s...if he wanted to....he probably doesn't want to.
We've never had anything close to the Mendoza, Nelson, Stanton, Lloyd type middle relief of the "dynasty" years, even though guys like Joba and others were purported to be that.
I think picking up the 11 mill option on Wood would have been smart.
Posada is a concern. He should probably be a full time DH starting ASAP. He can still be effective with the bat. But I don't know what the answer is for a full time catcher? Montero - nice hitter but hell, is he any better than Posada behind the plate? Cervelli is an upgrade, but let's not act like he's Johnny Bench back there.

You got to worry about the rotation. Pettitte may NOT be around 2-3 seasons from now. Though I think he'll be back, it's not even a guarantee next season.
I still believe in Jeter. He could have a bounceback year. But he may not.
Mo is a freak of nature, but nature catches up to everyone, and he truly is irreplaceable.
Shockingly, Jorge is ranked 4th in the AL in catchers by Elias. But we know the deal.
I doubt Cervelli is back next season.

I myself think Cervelli is very overrated defensively...If we had to go Montero/Posada for the majority of the next season I am ok with that.....but I'm sure I am in the minority...

Defensively, it's a terrible combo, though in theory, Romine will hit AAA, and HOPEFULLY, he'll continue to improve to the point where HE will be MLB ready.

Since if the Cubs want to take Joba & Swisher for Zambrano and see if he can turn it around in NY? He's a big game pitcher that has grown tired of Chicago and vice versa and then try to sign Lee and resign Petitte and keep Hughes as the #5. Try and just unload Burnett and a starting rotation of CC, Lee, Andy, Zambrano and Hughes wouldn't be bad. Make a play for Werth but not for more than 4 years. Crawford is tabbed to go to the Angels, but personally I know how great he his but Gardner with another year is a much cheaper version! Behind the plate, well we are stuck with Jorge and possibly Montero; 2 big bats but no defense. I'm not the biggest Cervelli fan so I can do without him. Try and see if Wood wants to come back for multiple years at a lower amount?? That is sketchy, knowing that he wants to be a closer as does Soriano....

Jeter is in the top echelon? Are you batty? The end of whatever new contract he wrings out of the Yankees may end up uglier than the end of Posada's.
I stand by my contention that Montero will NEVER catch here. He is a total shitshow behind the plate. As the Yankees are stuck with Posada and need to reserve most of the DH time for him, Montero will be traded. Yankees may look to rent a piece until Romine - yes, Romine, is ready to take the job. Cervelli absolutely needs to go as well. He brings nothing with the stick, and as mentioned his defense is tragically overrated.
Lee is not coming here - see the Cliff Lee thread for discussion.
Pettitte probably wont come back, its his injuries. Still immensely talented, you can tell the injuries are hampering him. I think he's had enough.
Read today the Tigers are set to throw a ridiculous amount of money at Crawford, to where its possible no one will see fit to try and match.

According to Elias, Jeter's the second most valuable free agent. I have no idea how. Rafael Soriano is the top, so I guess you can't go by that.
Montero won't be traded unless it's for someone big. These are not the Yankees of the 1980s. They aren't trading the top hitting prospect in the minors (according to Jim Callis) to clear room for Posada.
It would have to be something huge.

From what I am hearing from you regarding this Elias thing, you should just discount that, and never look at it again. It sounds ridiculous to me.
Montero WILL be traded, cause the Yankees have nowhere to play him.
