Kudos to 24 for owning the Drama aspect of the Emmy Awards. Sutherland deserves the damn award after 5 seasons of owning terrorists. I cant wait until he begins to inflict population control on China in Season 6.

I've yet to see even a single episode of this show, yet I've never heard a negative comment about it.
I'm gonna have to get on the badnwagon at some point.

Once you start watching cHo, plan on not going anywhere for days. You will be hooked.
Jack Bauer is a god.

If you do start, just try to avoid any and all discussions. It's so much better when you don't know what's gonna happen. I watched the first season on DVD, and knew all along about the shocking ending of the season. I also watched season 5 before season 4, so I knew who lived, who died, who's definately not the mole, etc...

The best way is simply going through the DVDs and catching up. Not a good show to start in the middle of a season. Rent the first season DVD.

That's a lot of TV to watch, but I guess the best way. I got my boyfriend to watch the show for the first time last season and he absolutely loved it.
However, sitting there and explaining everything that had happened in the past got me confused about things. And there is just so much to know.

What's the premise of the show? He's a CIA agent or something?

He's a CTU agent that's been fired, give or take, 5 times. It is quite good. I always tell myself and anyone that wants to listen that I won't watch the new season because it gets a tad bit worse each year, but I end up watching the whole season.

careful when you watch the dvd's. i got rose hooked on season 4, so she watched the first 3 seasons in like the span of a month. its a bit formulaic, but it wasnt meant to be watched 72 hours in 30 days! the drama definetly gets built week to week and adds to the allure of the show

Dave got me hooked last season, so I really need to pop 96 hours in the DVD player before I start watching this season... but I've got time!
I am way too impatient to actually wait a week between episodes. Even before I got my DVR box, I tended to roll tape on anything I actually cared about & then catch up 5-6 episodes at a time. Somehow I have the ability to avoid duscussion of even the most talked about shows, so I don't get any spoilers, either, until I catch up...

24 finally got what they deserved for a long time, which is the damn emmy award for best drama. But most of all kudos to Keither Sutherland for winning best actor in a drama.

I saw that too. Played by James Cromwell. I don't know if he is worthy to be the sire of Jack Bauer. But I guess since Shatner is busy with Boston Legal, they had to get someone.

We have learned from five seasons of "24" that Jack Bauer was married (until a terrorist killed his wife) and has a daughter (who pretty much doesn't want any part of him now).
In the coming season, we'll also find out that Jack has a father.
Oscar and three-time Emmy nominee James Cromwell ("Six Feet Under," "Babe") has joined the cast of the FOX series in a recurring part as Phillip Bauer, Jack's (Kiefer Sutherland) estranged dad. British comic Eddie Izzard, who will star in FX's upcoming series "The Riches," will also appear on the show as a "villainous accomplice" -- although to whom, FOX isn't saying.
Cromwell and Izzard join an ever-growing list of new additions to the "24" cast for season six. Other newcomers to the show include Peter MacNicol ("Numb3rs," "Ally McBeal"), Regina King ("Ray"), Kal Penn ("Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle"), Marisol Nichols ("In Justice"), Alexander Siddig ("Syriana") and Harry Lennix ("Commander in Chief").
FOX has also dropped a few details about this season's plot. The action will pick up 20 months after the events of last season's finale, which ended with Bauer being abused by Chinese agents aboard a freighter bound for parts unknown. Wayne Palmer (DB Woodside), the brother of former President David Palmer, is the new president of the United States.
After a series of "horrific terrorist attacks," Palmer calls the CTU team -- sans Bauer, at least at first -- back into action. CTU will, however, once again have the services of Milo Pressman (Eric Balfour, reprising his role from way back in season one) and Morris O'Brian (Carlo Rota), Chloe's (Mary Lynn Rajskub) ex-husband.
The series will begin its sixth season in January.

I still have not seen this show yet. Is each season diff? Would I be lost if I started watching this season when it repeats?

I think you would be fine to start watching repeats, but the first few seasons are worth getting on DVD and watching first.

I believe you can actually download those 4 episodes now. There is going to be a DVD of those first 4 episodes released within a week or so of the airing, and that DVD is now downloadable. I won't do it though since I prefer to simply watch it on my TV with everyone else.

Did you see President Palmer perform the coin toss at one of the bowl games last week?

I was just clearing off the DVR box... and there was President Logan!
He was Donna's priest, Father Chris, counseling her about her virginity on 90210... on Balls' favorite episode, the one where Andrea got hit by a car.

Season 1: was excellent, and is still the best season by far.
Season 2: Almost as good. Here's where the "Millions of lives are at risk" factor got put into the show.
Season 3: Solid, but not as good as the firs two. It starts off very slow, and picks up in the end.
Season 4: Keeps to the same formula, and it beings to get stale. Acting aside from Sutherland becomes unbearable.
Season 5: And the shark is officially jumped. The dialog and acting begin to become over the top ridiculous and the heavy handed Americana lines are laughable. It's become a bit ridiculous now.
Essentially, it went from being one of the best shows on TV to becoming MacGyver.

And yet each year it gets more viewers and more recognition as one of the best shows on TV.

True, but American Idol gets that sort of play too and that show is disgusting.
It's addictive, and it's still a decent show, but it's nowhere near as good as the first two seasons.
They have to change things up a bit. Since season 2 it's been Bauer saving America and the modern world. How about something on a lower scale. Mix it up. Let's see something different. The past three seasons had the same formula, just different villains.

The Jack Bauer Kill Count, going into Season 6:
Season 1: 10 Season 2: 30 Season 3: 14 Season 4: 43 Season 5: 38 ===============
Total Kills: 135 KPH: 1.125
There actually is a controversial 136th kill, but last year, the Section39.com crew ruled it as a non-kill. Paul Raines was on the operating table when Jack Bauer bursted in with a patient. At gunpoint, he pulled the doctors off Paul Raines and forced them to work on Bauer's patient. Paul Raines died due to lack of attention by the doctors.
While the official Jack Bauer kill count website counts this as a kill (though with an asterisk), the people voted to take it off the board.
But it's a new season now, and plenty of new bad guys for Jack Bauer to kill.

Jack Bauer registered his first kill of the season last night, and while his time in the Chinese prison certainly slowed him down, it was an impressive kill. However, it was only one kill in the first two hours--a KPH of 0.50. Not his best work, but it's early.
Season 1: 10 Season 2: 30 Season 3: 14 Season 4: 43 Season 5: 38 Season 6: 1 ===============
Season 6 KPH: 0.50 Total Kills: 136 KPH: 1.115
