Seems Pavano has had a setback. I guess he was too close to actually putting on a uniform and pitching. What a shock. He has been so durable in his Yankee career.

I was really counting on him, too. The same way I was counting on suddenly learning the secret to understanding women, curing cancer and the common cold and possessing a winning lottery ticket.
What a bust. I hated the Wright signing much more than the Pavano signing, but at least Wright is making a damn effort.

Could have been worse. He could have been given another $80 million, and 3 extra years. But holy crap this guy is garbage.

What a weekend in Anaslime. Brutal. Seriously man, I know you guys all get in your fair share of road trips per year, but unlike me, 99% of your Yankee games aren't spent at Yankee-away games. It just gets more and more annoying each and every year, particularly in Anaheim. Now don't get me wrong, there are more than a fair share of Yankees fans in attendance at any given Angels/Yanks game in Anaheim...I actually think it's a pretty pathetic comment about the Angels...well, not about the Angels, but more about the Orange County baseball fan....that even with the Angels being so good in the past 5 years or so, it's still a good 40% Yankee fans. The Angels fans are annoying enough because most of them are brand new, and most of them just caught on to chanting "Yankees Suck" because it's apparently the thing to do. I mean hey, I know it's a baseball game...and I know supporting your team comes first, and logic takes a back seat, but I don't know....it just reeks of ignorance when these Angels fans get SO jacked up about beating the Yankees when 1) Boston is losing too, so the Yankees really aren't getting hurt in the playoff picture. 2) The A's are still winning and the Angels are really in great danger of not making the playoffs at all. But I know it's the Yankees and I know they bring out the best (or worst) in everyone as far as the heckling goes. The other thing I've noticed over the past several years is that I'm becoming more and more annoyed with the Yankee fans in Southern California. The comments I hear from them in the stands, again, just reeks of ignorance. Half of them don't even know their own team, they come to the park loaded up in Yankee gear armed with just the lamest most unoriginal chants/heckles, Mexican skanks from Santa Ana, sporting their brand new A-Rod jerseys squealing, "That's my man!" My feeling on yelling things out at baseball games is if you can't be original and funny, then shut the fuck up – that’s partly why I have so much admiration for the Bleacher Creature phenomenon. The lamest, most unoriginal, unbelievably retarded fan was witnessed yesterday in my section - he just happened to be a so-called Yankee fan (sitting with his Boston friend wearing a tie-dye t-shirt and a Shaggy from Scooby Doo hair cut) who looked like one of the Gotti boys...engaging in underage drinking and spouting off the most unoriginal boring shit I've ever heard in a ballpark. The fact that he somehow represented the Yankees, at least in my section, really bothered me a lot, and it was particularly annoying that he was routinely getting owned by a Lucky Louie lookalike Angels fan. I don't know man....forgive this post as this is an off-the-cuff rant stemming from frustration over the Yankees dismal performance this weekend, and having to deal with annoying Angel's fans and accepting the fact that their "Yankees Suck" chants were accurate for at least 66.66% of the weekend! One positive…I won a StubHub t-shirt by correctly answering a Yankees trivia question when picking up my tickets for Sunday’s game. “Who has the longest hitting streak in baseball?” Ha…I felt like pulling out an Adam Sandler quote from Billy Madison, “Any more BRAIN BUSTERS? ” Oh yeah, the other thing that was really nice - Bernie got an amazing ovation yesterday during his last at-bat and in left in the 8th....by then I just so happened to have moved from my sun-soaked right field seats, to a field level seats just next to where Bernie was playing....he got the "Bernie Berne Bernie" chant that really rung loudly throughout the entire stadium. I was impressed with Yankee fans in Cali being at least aware enough to know that they might be seeing Bernie LIVE for the last time.

Could be worse. Do Angels fan act like Dodger fans and come in the 3rd, but leave in the 7th?

That's a SoCal phenomenon. That happens at Dodger, Angels, Kings, Lakers, Clippers, Ducks games alike...whether winning or losing.

What the hell is going on with car accidents and major league baseball players this year?
Turns out now, according to the Buster Onley on the Michael Kay show, Pavano's recent rib cage injury may be due to a car accident he was involved in recently, but neglected to inform the Yankee brass of.

In Mussina's last 16 starts - a good half seasons worth of work, he is 6-5 with a 4.86 E.R.A. Not going to get it done.
Also, appears I was right regarding Bubba Crosby. He could not even get a callup once rosters expanded. This is probably the end for him in pinstripes.

Well if it is, I sure hope he goes into the HOF as a Yankee. I can't really blame them for not calling him up though. The man is hitting .238 in AAA ball. By the way, check out www.minorleaguebaseball.com. They made the site a little better.

Yet eight of those 16 starts were quality starts..Mussina will be fine.

The Yankees are not paying him to be "fine." 6 wins in 16 starts with an ERA hovering around 5 is not necessarily "fine" in any case.

It's definitely not that good. The worst part is that he will likely be given game 1 of the playoffs, and Wang will be put in the Pettitte role of getting us out of an 0-1 deficit.

Hideki Matsui played in a rehab game in Trenton last night. He went 1 for 3, and everything went well.

Melky Cabrera, meet bench. Bench, this is Melky Cabrera.

Hopefully not. In a perfect world, Giambi will get a season ending injury and Matsui would DH for the rest of the season.

Considering that Matsui has shown much greater improvment in his rehab than expected, Torre has no problem putting him out in LF after a week or so of DH'ing.
And since Melky has been awful in the field the last two weeks and is hitting .255 with THREE Rbi, it's perhaps time for him to grab some pine.

If you go by that logic, Giambi should have a wooden ass. Giambi is 1 for September. .255 is higher than what Giambi is hitting for the entire year, and that includes his killer April and solid August.
Matsui will never be as good defensively as Melky and Giambi will never be as good offensively as Matsui. If anyone should come off the bench, it's Giambi, ESPECIALLY when you factor in his injury.

Torre said that to start. He also said in different interviews he will have to find a way to "work Cabrera in here and there" as he deserves it. I dont necessarily agree with that.... I think a lineup with Giambi and Matsui in it is a much better option than one with Cabrera and Matsui, and Torre seems to agree. Give it a week, Matsui will be back out there. After all, thats what is going to be happening next year. Cabrera does not have a spot there either.

And you know as well as anyone that when Torre gets a favorite, he's loyal, whether that favorite deserves that loyalty or not. Giambi is one of those favorites. But offensively AND defensively, the team is stronger with Matsui as DH, Melky in left, and Giambi on the bench.
Next year is next year. Not worrying about it now.

Just because someone has a lot of power doesn't mean he is a great player Freakz. Matsui is a better hitter than Giambi. Melky can hit well enough to be in the lineup and then some, and is the best defensive OFer on the team. Giambi is ice cold at the plate, can't play defense, can't run, etc. But Giambi does have one of the best batting eyes in baseball. And he DOES have some pop. Picture a situation with bases loaded and Giambi coming off the bench in any spot in the lineup? You get a guy who can draw a walk at a time when it can be helpful, or maybe hit it out. Ok, he'll strike out, but at least in theory it's a good plan.
Is Giambi the worst player in baseball? No, despite all the disgust I have for him. But is he the least important player between Matsui, Melky and Giambi? Yes.

I don't care what kinds of stats you throw into the argument: There is no justification for benching a guy with more than 30 HRs and more than 100 RBIs who's a threat to go deep every at-bat.
