This is fairly major news. It's funny, because I was actually thinking about this earlier in the week, but it looks like the Yankees will be cutting ties with Columbus. The AAA team has been in place since 1979, but they are moving, likely to Scranton, which is closer to NYC.
I always wondered why they were so far away. I actually had thought it would make more sense to use the SI Stadium for the AAA ballclub. I wonder what the stadium capacity is in Scranton.

I could be wrong but I believe there's some rule where an AAA club has to have a stadium with a certain seating capacity, that's why they won't ever be at Staten Island. Jw

The Scranton ballpark was made to be just like the Vet (it's been the Phillies' AAA team for years) -- same turf, same dimensions. I guess they'll remodel it. The Vet idea is already obsolete, anyway, with the Phils in their new park. It's a very easy drive, and the ballpark has good and reasonable food and beer. If this actually does happen, road trips are a must.

Jw That definitely makes sense, but why not BUILD the stadium with that thought in mind when they were building it? And what could that capacity be? I doubt AAA teams see major crowds. I could be wrong.

Yeah, the park in Staten Island is too small.
Some minor league clubs draw 7-10,000 people a game. The minor league teams up in Buffalo outdraw teams like the Marlins over the full course of the season. I dont think that ballpark in SI holds that.
And, in todays baseball "parlance" there is not much of a thing to being "too far away" from your home team. For one thing, they may need to call you up when they, or you, are playing on the road. Secondly, airplanes move pretty darn fast. This is not the 1930s and days of parlor car card games in the old Boxcar Willie.

That said, having the minor league team close is good business. You could actually have realistic future Yankees within a decent driving distance for Yankee fans. They should have built the SI park with that in mind. Is the park too small for AA too?

Its NOT good business. You dont want Yankee fans driving to minor-league Yankee games when they can go to REAL Yankee games, or watch REAL Yankee games on local television. Its smart, and accepted business practice to keep your minor-league teams at arms length to not encroach on each others markets. If your AAA team can sell out 1500 miles away from your home Stadium, THAT is "good business."

Sounds kind of shady. I think it would be awesome to be able to go to both AAA and Yankee games. If anything, it builds a better attachments to the players and adds to the draw of the big league park.

You CAN go to AAA games featuring possible future Yankees. As in when the Yankee team comes into nearby areas to play other farm teams. Also, on the other hand, its not a bad thing for a fan in Ohio to become a Derek Jeter fan. While they can not necessarily go to a Yankee game on a whim, they can pay money to get the baseball package on TV or radio to follow this "future Yankee" when he gets to the show, go to see him when he comes to Cleveland to play, or spend money in other ways that benefits everyone.
Its really quite simple if you would take a second to think about it.

I don't like it. There's more to this. It doesn't make sense. I think dirty money is changing hands.

LOL @ Balls' conspiracy theory!
I actually prefer AA games to AAA games, because so many top prospects spend very little time at AAA or skip it altogether, so I was sad to see the Yanks move their AA team from Albany to Norwich, Conn., in the middle of friggin nowhere, a few years ago.
One great thing about AAA games are the guys with some major league experience who turn up in lineups and often cause people to say, "Oh, YEAH! I remember HIM!"

Following tradition, the seven rookies on the Yankees roster were made to dress up in costume for the team's final road trip of the season. Their look? George Steinbrenner, according to the Newark Star-Ledger.
All seven wore white turtlenecks, blue blazers, gray dress pants, silver comb-over wigs, and aviator sunglasses with gold rims. The group got together for pictures in the clubhouse as teammates gathered around, laughing, before making their way out of the Stadium.

I had one of my favorite moments as a New York sports fan during the first game Saturday. I was fortunate enough to get invited to YES Network's box. Darryl Strawberry was there for the first five innings or so.
The two funny happenings: 1) Strawberry introducing himself, like he needed an introduction. "Hi, I'm Daryl." Well, NO SHIT! Really nice guy, though.
2) At one point, his cell phone rang and I heard him say, "Yo, Mookie! Where you at?"

MAJOR UPDATE!!!!!
In startling Yankee news, it has been announced that Carl Pavano is out for the season.
I don't know how the Yankees can make up for this loss. Pavano was undefeated in 2006. He didn't even give up a run! He never caused any controversy in the clubhouse.
He will be missed.

I heard Jim Rome summarize this article on the air this morning. While I agree with Giambi's assessment of what exactly it was that the Yankees needed from A-Rod, I have a problem with the guy who took up the task of confronting Alex. I don't think that Jason Giambi has quite been David Ortiz in situations where "the big hit" has been needed. For a guy who was a former MVP and one of the top 5 most feared hitters in baseball to degrade to roughly a .250 - .260 hitter....well, I'm definitely not a Giambi-hater like Balls is, but let's just say I don't think that Jason Giambi was the best candidate to challenge A-Rod in this way. And the reason is this - if Giambi feels he has room to critique A-Rod, then that makes me feel as though HE feels that he's doing his job just fine and dandy, when in reality there's a WHOLE LOT of room for improvement just to get back to the player he was when the Yankees signed him, let alone putting up typical A-Rod type numbers. Yeah sure Giambi is a big RBI guy, but A-Rod, mired in one of his worst seasons, is still putting up numbers far superior to Giambi while Giambi is still basking in his “comeback kid” glory.

If you had bothered to even skim the article in the beginning it explains why Giambi was a worthy player to confront A-rod. Jw

"For all the scorn heaped upon Giambi for his ties to the BALCO steroid scandal, he is a strong clubhouse voice because he plays with a passion that stirs teammates and even opponents."
I'm supposed to consider Giambi as the next coming of Vince Lombardi because he chewed out Miguel Tejada? Criticizing Miguel Tejada for his attitude is like shooting ducks in a barrel and calling yourself a hunter.
Oooooh! COMPELLING! That doesn't jive with me. Lead by example, like Jeter. Jeter's performance on the field and his "deafening silence" in regards to A-Rod's play is all the motivation A-Rod should need to prompt him to do whatever he can to step up his game. Giambi is perfect candidate because he tries so much harder than A-Rod and gets fewer results??? Ummm, yeah, makes sense...you're right on the pulse of this thing Jw.

I think with Giambi, he's a competitor, and has throughout his career kicked teammates in the ass when he felt it was needed. But some of the comments actually required the reader to think that Giambi COULD hit as well as ARod or better. Giambi must think he's more than a .250 hitter with some pop.
That said, if you ignore talent, in terms of a clubhouse presence, Giambi's attitude is good. I only hate him for his skills and lack thereof.
From what the article said, Giambi confronting ARod is interesting.
It's not a numbers thing here. It's an intangible.

Also, if you're going to ignore the actual numbers, and go off of intangibles...if you need a guy who maximizes his production, despite limited talent (at least relative to A-Rod's inherent talent) to lecture A-Rod about heart then why wouldn't Posada be the guy - a guy who has clearly overachieved his whole career through heart and passion and truly caring about his team. Posada would have been a much better candidate to confront A-Rod, if this is the kind of pep-talk he needed.

This Giambi/A-rod stuff all deserves its own thread, fellas. This is for the little stuff, but feel free to converse wherever.
Anyhoo, casting has commenced on the "Bronx is Burning" miniseries for HBO. Playing George Steinbrenner....Oliver Platt. And there are reports that John Turtorro will play Billy Martin.

John Turturro as Billy Martin! HA!
Well, i've said it many times on the other board....John Turturro is BY FAR my favorite actor, and I believe he is the most versatile, yet underrated actor out there.
He pulled off Howard Cosell...I'm sure he can do Billy Martin.

Yet another casting note...Daniel Sunjata (Rescue Me) will be playing Reggie Jackson.
As for Reggie Jackson, one of the best lines in baseball came from Mickey Rivers, regarding Mr Reginald Martinez Jackson. He said, "you got a white mans first name, a hispanics middle name, and black mans last name. No wonder you're all fucked up."
