Giambi is not a threat to go deep in every at bat. And he's ice cold, can't hit for average (which means the odds of him actually GETTING a hit are low), can't run, and is hurt too.
Matsui is a better hitter than Giambi.
I repeat, Matsui is a better hitter than Giambi. He also is a power hitter who can hit in the clutch AND hit at or near .300.
Cabrera is more likely to get a hit than Giambi, which is why his average is 30 points higher. Cabrera can play defense better than Matsui.
Yes, Giambi has power, but again, if you have Matsui and Cabrera, Giambi should be the odd man out.

Fine, he's ice cold right now, but if he starts hitting again, are you sticking to that?

He never hits that well for that long. And I'd always rather have Matsui up than Giambi.

Cabrera has been pretty chilly himself.

Add defense into the mix. It's actually closer to 35 points now. To me, I'd give up those TEN HRs (because Matsui would be the one really replacing Giambi), for the extra defense of Cabrera, who doesn't need to hit HRs because there are so many others that do that.
With the game on the line, Giambi is one of the last hitters on the team I'd want up. Giambi has the lowest average of any regular in the lineup.
The guy is 21 years old, plays great defense, can run, hits close to .290 as a rookie, and you'd let him ride the pine over a 30 something juiced up injury prone Tartabull.

What are you talking about Jewnose? You have 3 people. Matsui, Cabrera and Giambi. Cabrera brings too much defense to the table to be the odd man out, and Matsui is simply better than Giambi. In reality, I'd try to get some sort of rotation going to rest your older players and get Melky the proper time. But if I'm stuck picking two out of the three, Giambi's the odd man out.

you changed the melky vs. giambi scenario after you brought up how melky hits a whole 30 points higher. then you brought matsui etc in.
listen, im with you. id rather see melky play than giambi, but this team needs giambis bat in the lineup. matsui should go to dh, giambi at 1b, and melky in lf, with bernie riding pine.

The good news is that if Giambi can't complete the strikeout, mayrod can complete it.

Giambi over Bernie makes some more sense because Bernie's glove just isn't that good either.
But I am very happy with how Bernie played this year. Much better than I expected, and better than last year. I'd still rather see Bernie up with the game on the line than Giambi, but thing is, Bernie is already on the pine.
The question really becomes is Giambi's horrific defense, lousy average, inability to hit in the clutch, and the fact that the team is worse on the field with him at 1B, outweighed by the power potential.
One thing that MAYBE the return of Matsui can do is drop Giambi further in the lineup to #6. I'd rather see Abreu/ARod/Matsui as the 3-4-5.

I definitely agree with you on the possible 3-6 spots in the lineup.

id be inclined to put posada in the 5 before matsui at this point. but i personally wouldnt drop giambi below 5. and how is bernie on the bench right now? he is sharing dh responsibilities. but once hideki comes back, he wont.
i hear ya, i like bernies bat this year too. but his bat would be much better coming off the bench as a ph late in the game, then giambis. thats why you wouldnt bench giambi, you would bench bernie. with melky in lf, and matsui at dh.

So, I was just thinking about NEXT YEAR'S pitching staff.
Things are looking somewhat rosy for the Yankees right now, but to jump the gun a little...I wonder if the Yankees will be specifically looking to bolster the rotation this off-season, or do they have offensive concerns in mind. I can't imagine them expecting Johnson to make some big turn-around and become a consistent ace next year. He wasn't this year...he can only get worse at his age. I believe the Yankees are on the hook for Johnson in 2007, isn't that right?
So as far as I can tell, the only locks for the 2007 rotation are Mussina (they gotta re-sign him to a short contract, I'd think) and Wang who are both expected to be ace-types or close to it, and Johnson who can probably only be expected to be at best as good as this year (which ain't terrible).
I can't imagine Lidle or Wright being expected to play any role at all in 07.

Not quite sure how it's a speedbump when this thread has been quiet for 4 days. Simply moved on to another topic.

Uh, sorry the Yankees don't need mediocre left-handed pitchers who may punch out Torre after getting the hook early in a game. Jw

In the month of September, Hideki Matsui has TWICE as many hits as Jason Giambi.

Giambi has been hurt. And Torre said, even last night, he cant wait for him to be back to full strength and added to this potent mix.

2 for September. That's not twisting anything. Matsui has been hurt too. Yet he does more for the Yankees in one day than Giambi has in 2 weeks. Giambi at full strength sucks. The best thing that could happen to the Yankees right now would be a season ending injury for Giambi. With Matsui back and Sheff on the horizon, the Yankee wouldn't miss a thing and actually would improve their lineup. But with all three of them in the same lineup, the team is going to take a defensive nosedive, with 3 guys swinging for the seats and disappearing in October.

Gotta tip your cap to Matsui for being out 4 months and going 4 for 4. I know it is against the D-rays who's starter went 1/3 of an inning, but still impressive.
