So if the Yankees lose tonight, and the Sox win...and the Sox lose tomorrow to that juggernaut Johan Santana and the Twins....the Yankees will celebrate the division they win tomorrow....after Friday nights game. Michael Kay just sheepishly admitted that sounded a bit "contrived." Uh..you think? It sounds downright stupid to me. Yeah, its a tremendous accomplishment, but celebrate by going to dinner after the game as a team, and not by popping corks and dancing around in a staged ceremony.
Here's an idea....I know players cherish their few days off, but if the Yankees have a shot at clinching tomorrow night, WATCH THE GAME TOGETHER AS A TEAM and pop the bubbly then and there. It wont be required to be there, but if you get half the team, that makes a lot more sense than spraying champagne around 24 hours after you win the division.
And a cynic would say, "why celebrate at all....this is only step ONE."

Thank you Carl Pavano.

Well, as I called it, Cabrera will be on the bench for the postseason if Sheff makes it back and grabs a first basemans glove. Torre confirmed Matsui will be out in left, with Giambi manning the DH slot.
Thats the way to go.

Except when you want to win. Cabrera on the bench means more hits for the other team. It's a stupid move.
This will hurt the team, not help it. Sometimes loyalty makes a team worse. This is one of those times.

Tough call. I really like Cabrera. But if Sheff and Matsui are anywhere near themselves, this lineup is deadly. And LOL @ Carl Lewis!

The thing is, there is no coach in MLB that would sit Sheffield over Cabrera....Once he starts hiltting you will see why ...Where, at this time does Cabrera fit into the line up....the truth is, Nowhere right now ...I feel bad because of the way he help the team out but, such is life....

You need DEFENSE to win championships. Melky is a .286 hitter with a young person's hunger. Sheffield/Giambi/Matsui actually makes the team worse because none of them can field their positions. Those three should be battling for the 2 spots of DH/1B. I would DH Matsui, and bench Sheffield against all but lefties. Giambi may be a piece of shit, but barring injury, he earned a spot. So did Melky.

If I'm trying to win a playoff game, and everyone is at full strength, I have Melky in left, Matsui at DH and Sheff at first. But Sheff has been hurt all year and the .250 hitter should start ahead of him--especially against righties. Melky shouldn't even be in the debate. He should be the leftfielder for 2006. Worry about 2007 then.
Starting Sheff against lefties and using him as a pinch hitter is fine. It's going to hurt the team when that doesn't happen.
A defensive replacement just isn't good enough. What about the first 7 innings? It's not like well hit balls don't come in the first 21 outs. Melky is more than a defensive replacement. He's earned his spot.

If we have Matsui, Damon, and Abreu in the OF, how does that make Melky more important than Giambi?

Playoff experience for Matsui gives him he nod over Melky.

Grover, I would DH Matsui, and play Melky in left. Melky is the best leftfielder on the team. Matsui is a great hitter and has solid career playoff stats. So yes, you want him in the lineup. Giambi is a historical detriment to the team in the playoffs. With Sheff on the shelf all year, the only playing time Sheff should get should be at Giambi's expense (other than pinch hitting). The team will be weaker without Melky in the field.

So is Jorge Posada, if you want to go simply by numbers.
Giambi has a set slot in the lineup, as he should. I defer to Mr Torre here. LOL @ wanting Melky in over Jason Giambi!

Jorge Posada is a catcher. There is no one on the team better at that position than Jorge.
I realize you don't understand that there is more to the game than the occasional HR, but defense is part of the game.
Giambi's wrist is also shot for the year. He is going to hurt the team in the playoffs as usual. I hope he hits a big HR every at bat if he's in the lineup, and let's hope they don't hit much to left.
The team is weaker without Melky in the lineup.

Thats not how it works. And Sheff is not a proven first basemen, yet he still is there over Giambi.
You need Giambi's BIG bat in the lineup. Obviously once again you stand on your own island.

Giambi is a proven horrific 1B. Sheff can do no worse.
And Giambi's bat is NOT that big, even healthy. The guy hit .250 for the YEAR, and that's with a .344 April that artificially pumped that average up a good 10 points. He's one of the weakest bats in the lineup, who just happens to really connect on those rare occasions when he connects.
Melky is more likely to get a hit than Giambi. So is every regular in the lineup.
In reality, Sheffield shouldn't come back. But if he does, it's Giambi, and his limp wrist, that should ride the pine over a healthy 21 year old that is the best OFer on the team and hits .285.

Anyhoo, here's a blurb for ya.
Former Yankees first baseman Tino Martinez will fill in for Suzyn Waldman on tonight's WCBS radio broadcast. Waldman will miss the game to observe Rosh Hashanah.

I wish EVERY day was Rosh Hashanah. LOL...thats exactly what I was thinking ......And as far a Sheff over Giambi..Sheffield was non existant in the playoffs last year....and we still haven't seen what he is capable of right now after this injury.....its still up in the air ....

Giambi is ALWAYS nonexistent in the playoffs. So why have TWO people like that when you can platoon? Giambi hits against righties. Sheff against lefties.

Dude, you are forgetting something. Matsui is the YANKEE LEFTFIELDER. Next year, he will be the starting LF. Unless the Yanks jettison Sheff, this is what you will see next year too. Cabrera is a man without a job, so its stupid to gum up the works for him this year during the playoffs.
Besides, the idea of taking out either Sheff or Giambi's bat to put in CABRERA's is absurd.

Dude, YOU are forgetting something. Melky is a BETTER fielder. Next year is next year. I'm not worried about it. The team is BETTER with Melky in the field.
Giambi's bat is NOT better than Melky's. The nearly 40 point difference in average speaks volumes for that. Add the fact that you'd be replacing Giambi's power with Sheff, you would only be making the lineup better.
You would have given Wally Pipp 1B back.

Jesus christ, the AVG, give it a rest. Look at the OBP doofus, Melkys done great but hes a bench guy in the playoffs. Stop letting your hatred for Giambi cloud your though process for a better yankee lineup. Giambi has produced way more than Melky. I don't give a shit if Melky gets 3 million hits in a season, Giambi is on base more, he works counts, he gets on for other guys to produce. Melky has done that, but your more confident in him this year than Giambi, who really if you think about it hasn;t been horrible in the playoffs. Melky gets the bench, he's lucky he's even seeing post season time let alone regular playing time. You have to go with experience.
