Things are looking bright for the future of the Franklin & Marshall Diplomats, who are now 15-2. They avenged one of their losses already, and while the second loss dropped them out of the top 25, they are ranked 27th in the nation, and their starters are 3 sophomores, 1 junior and 1 freshman. That means they are a young team playing well and hopefully they will get some tournament experience.
Of course, due to fucked up D3 rules, they may not even make the tourney without an automatic bid. I remember one year they were 10th in the country and didn't make the tourney because they lost the conference championship game and didn't get an at large bid. Retarded.

It was a big night for the F&M Diplomats last night, as all time Division III wins leader Coach Glenn Robinson notched his 750th career win. It was also the 1200th win in school history as the 16th ranked Diplomats improved their record to 20-2 with an impressive win at Ursinus. The accomplishment was so great that F&M got a rare shoutout on Sportscenter last night.
This was a quicker than expected return to the top for F&M, as these underclassmen have stepped it up big time. Should be interesting come March Madness, as this team has a legit shot at the Sweet 16. I think they're not refined enough to win it all, but they have a bright future.

rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/basketball/blog/the_dagger/post/Memphis-opts-against-flying-the-FedEx-flag?urn=ncaab,141637 Memphis opts against flying the FedEx flagWhat would have been just a run of the mill Wednesday night Memphis steamrolling of an in-conference opponent nearly turned into a grand and unsightly commercial for FedEx.
On "FedEx Appreciation Night," the Memphis Tigers were granted NCAA permission to wear FedEx's colors (but not their logo) against SMU. Upon further review, though, and among a few complaints, Memphis decided to stick with the traditional blue and white. Sorry, SMU. You'll get no visual distraction while you're being gutted.
The plan was scrapped because of both Memphis and FedEx, according to Gary Parrish at CBS Sports, "fearing a backlash both locally and nationally about an NCAA team blurring the lines between amateur sports and commercial revenue."
And obviously, we just can't have that line between amateur sports and commercialism being stepped on. No sir. This wholesome amateur game of ours is played for love and with the hope that maybe, if we all show good sportsmanship, that maybe little Jimmy's mother will bake us cupcakes after the game. There are no corporate interests at work in college basketball.
What would have been the harm? Memphis gets to do a Clemson impersonation, someone at FedEx gets to brag about it at the water cooler, and we all move on. Heaven forbid that someone get the idea that corporate money is involved with college basketball.
It's not too late to change your minds, Memphis. Maybe even by Wednesday, SMU could strike up a deal with UPS, wear brown uniforms to the game, bring this guy as a mascot and turn this into a heated rivalry. What can brown do for you? He can take you to the hole, baby.

Big game tonight for the now 13th ranked 21-2 Franklin & Marshall Diplomats, as they take on the Gettysburg Bullets on the road. Though they have clinched a conference playoff berth, F&M seeks to avenge its only home loss of the season. Gettysburg defeated F&M on January 21. F&M's only other loss was to McDaniel on the road, and they avenged that defeat by beating McDaniel at home.
But that's a much different task than going into someone else's house and taking a victory. Despite being set for the conference playoffs, a victory is vital for the Dips, as seeding and a possible spot in the NCAA Tourney are at stake. This young squad has exceeded expectations, but the hope is for this team to continue onward and upward.

Tonight, the NCAA Division III men's basketball tournament begins for the F&M Diplomats as they host Wesley at Mayser Center in Lancaster, PA. The Dips got an at large bid after finishing the season with a wimper, losing twice to Gettysburg and once to Dickinson, dropping 3 out of their last 4 and falling to 22-5.
However, their strong start did allow them a tourney birth. Believe it or not, that wasn't so clear cut, despite them being ranked in the top 30 in the country. One year, they were ranked 10th, and didn't make the tournament due to retarded system that has way too many automatic bids.
Fortunately, that wasn't the case this year.
The tip off is at 8pm for the Dips, as they look to make the round of 32.

You best bring your A-game when you take to the hardwood at Mayser Center.

True. I saw the team play online last weekend. Not the best team I've seen. Decent defense, but I didn't like their shot selection. Lots of rushed shots in traffic. Their foul shooting wasn't very good at all, and they don't have someone who can drain that clutch 3. But they are a very young team that is already in the tourney with no seniors starting. They are a year ahead of schedule, so I have high hopes. Plus they have GRob coaching and he is the man.

Don't know if I ever mentioned this before, but the year after I graduated NYU (meaning the 1991-92 hoops season), NYU made it to the Division III title game and got bent over and screwed with no dinner or drinks.
NYU was up two, and Lebanon Valley attempted a buzzer beater. The game wasn't televised (duh), but WPIX had a camera there (the sports anchor at the time, Bob Goldscholl, or something like that, was also the NYU sports information director).
Anyway, Lebanon Valley's buzzer beater missed, and you clearly saw the red light go on signifying the end of the game, then, almost a full second later, a hand tip the ball into the hoop. They counted the bucket, sent the game to OT and the Violets (embarassing, but what can I do?) got drilled in OT.

That was 1994, and I am VERY acquainted with that game. F&M beat Lebanon Valley not once, but TWICE that year. They blew it in the Sweet 16 at HOME. Then LVC beat the team that beat F&M and went on to the final four, where NYU got massively screwed.
The ultimate asterisk.

I'm not an NC fan, but I am a hater of everything about Duke, so I root for NC at least three or four times per season.

I can't stand Duke - or anything Duke related. Hansbrough is soon to pass JJ Redick's ACC scoring record, thank God.

Yeah! UNC regular season ACC Champs!
Thanks whatever-your-name-is for pulling up the slack in my absence. Tyler Hansbrough said after the game that his all-time favorite memory as a Tar Heel was beating Duke his freshman year on JJ Redick's Senior Night. Oh how sweet it is!
I need a bracket to join and dominate!

The road to the Final Four will once again be going through Mayser Center as Franklin & Marshall hosts one of the four sectionals in the Sweet 16. F&M owes this fortune due to Ithaca College being upset in the round of 32.
The winner of the F&M/Salem State game on Friday advances to the Elite Eight game, also at Mayser Center, to take on the winner of the DeSales v. Mass Dartmouth game.
The winner of that gets their ticket punched to Salem, Virginia and the Final Four.

NCAA Division III.
I'm really hoping we win, because if we do, I think we get to actually play a team from the Little East. The Little East!

The Little East?? Awwww. Is there a Little 10 as well? I don't even know what TEAMS are division III, I'll have to look that up.
I was driving through North Carolina once and saw a billboard for App State, congratulating them as Division I Champs.... No where did it say that they were Division 3A Champs. Tricky billboard.
