I wonder what the over/under is on the Red Sox finishing their season sub .500. They're 9 games over now. If they are shutting down Papi and Manny for the season, it's not that far-fetched.
They'd have to go 9-19 the rest of the way to make it happen.

Roxbury, MA court, 30 Aug 2006
Roxbury MA (AP) - A seven-year-old boy was at the center of a Boston courtroom drama yesterday when he challenged a court ruling over who should have custody of him. The boy has a history of being beaten by his parents and the judge initially awarded custody to his aunt, in keeping with child custody law and regulations requiring that family unity be maintained to the degree possible.
The boy surprised the court when he proclaimed that his aunt beat him more than his parents and he adamantly refused to live with her. When the judge then suggested that he live with his grandparents, the boy cried out that they also beat him.
After considering the remainder of the immediate family and learning that domestic violence was apparently a way of life among them, the judge took the unprecedented step of allowing the boy to propose who should have custody of him. After two recesses to check legal references and confer with child welfare officials, the judge granted temporary custody to the Boston Red Sox, whom the boy firmly believes is not capable of beating anyone.

The Red Sox sure do have a pretty awesome farm system.

You mean the farm system that's keeping the Marlins in the wild-card race? ;D
The only thing that makes me laugh harder is an ex-Met pitching a no-no.

AFTER YESTERDAYS REDSOX WIN. THIS IS A QUOTE FROM DAVID ORTIZ SPEAKING ABOUT THE 2006 M.V.P. AWARD !! ``But they'll vote for a position player, use that as an excuse. They're talking about Jeter a lot, right? He's done a great job, he's having a great season, but Jeter is not a 40-homer hitter or an RBI guy. It doesn't matter how much you've done for your ball club, the bottom line is, the guy who hits 40 home runs and knocks in 100, that's the guy you know helped your team win games."

sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2582790more from the interview "I'm right there," he said, "but I'm not going to win it. They give it to [Rodriguez] one year, even though his team was in last place, so now they can't play that BS anymore, just because your team didn't make it. They gave it to Alex that year because of his numbers. But they always have a reason to vote for whatever, so that's why I don't worry about it." "I'll tell you one thing," Ortiz said. "If I get 50 home runs and 10 more RBI [which would give him 137], that's going to be a round number that no one else in the American League will have."

Ortiz talking about Jeter:
"Don't get me wrong -- he's a great player, having a great season, but he's got a lot of guys in that lineup," Ortiz continued. "Top to bottom, you've got a guy who can hurt you. Come hit in this lineup, see how good you can be."
I couldn't have said it better myself.

The Yankees were DEVASTATED by injuries this season. 230 RBI and about 60plus HR were taken from the lineup. If you don't think they weren't hurt by that, you didn't follow the team all year. You had streaky starting pitching. You had a bullpen that had trouble getting to Rivera. Every single starter spent time hurt this year whether they were on the DL or not. But Derek Jeter is putting out arguably a career year, in a season when his team needed him the most. Others on the team were streaky. Hit/miss. Jeter stayed solid all year long and then some. And to top it off, he fields his position brilliantly.
Ortiz is a schmuck. Hitting 40 HRs doesn't necessarily win games. Anyone who watches Giambi and ARod can see the results of a HR with a 10-1 score. Are all of their HRs like that? No. But a lot are. Yes, Ortiz hits a lot of game winners and is one of the best clutch hitters in the game. He will be remembered as a great clutch hitter.
But HRs are not the only thing that wins games. Timely hitting, defense, being in the right spot at the right time, and a shitload of intangibles. If Jeter wins the MVP, it's because he deserves it.
Ortiz had a case when his team was contending and he was playing everyday. He doesn't have a case now.

So devestated that we wrapped up the division a month ago and we're looking to get the best record in all of baseball? Even banged up our lineup kills theirs top to bottom. Ortiz has a good case this year, and he should have won it last year, but this year it's a bit tighter with Jeter, Mauer and Jermaine Dye having awesome years. I'm shocked he's whining about it to the press and tryignt o get that sympathy vote, and that will make it all the funnier when he doesn't get it. LOL!!!!!!

Chalk that up to great managing, and some unexpected players stepping up big time. And very important, Derek Jeter raised his game. 2006 showed once again just how important Jeter is to this team.
Mauer and Dye and Jeter all have better cases than Ortiz at this point.

I agree, but last year Ortiz should have been MVP, even though it's grat Arod got it instead.

Ortiz didn't play the field. ARod was just as valuable at the plate then, put up great numbers, and played Gold Glove level 3B. ARod was more valuable.

That's a WEAK fucking quote, if Ortiz really did say that.
David Ortiz will NEVER be Derek Jeter. 50 years from now, Ortiz will be remembered as a guy who had a few standout years, and Derek Jeter will be a guy who had an elite, standout career.
As much as I hate the Sox, I can't believe that Ortiz said that verbatim. That writer must have paraphrased and taken some liberties with his interpretation.
And it makes Ortiz look like fucking moron as well. He calls out Jeter for not being an RBI guy, and he's kinda right. Jeter is a number 2 hitter and not expected to be a big RBI producer, and he STILL has 91 RBIs and will likely hit 100. 100 RBIs, a batting average of .340, a .419 OBP or so, contending for a batting title, playing well above average short-stop....VS......a guy who doesn't own a fucking mit, a .288 average, will probably end up with about 135-140 RBIs, and a .408 OBP. This is an easier decision that LAST YEAR'S MVP!

Like Ortiz is wasting away in Boston doing it all on his own...who does he have hitting after him mac? Is it Streroid-bino? Double Play-Rod? Yeah the Yankee lineup is full of killers...but how many of them are as good as Manny Ramirez? Don't act like Ortiz is the only good hitter on that team of assholes.
