The NCAA tournament is mostly based on the top teams getting in. There are definitely flaws with it. I don't like automatic bids. Just rank the top 64 teams and invite them. But that said, there's a big difference between 64 teams and 4 teams.

Balls, again - you are wasting your time, and more importantly OURS, talking about something that NOBODY is talking about. This is not happening, not up for discussion. Stop whining, the Yankees missed the damn playoffs. Life goes on, find something else to do.

You've gotta be shitting me...the Angels can't do shit against the Sox in the playoffs.
And Alfonso Soriano continues to be a shithead in the playoffs.

I get that the Yanks missed the playoffs--not because of their record, but because of geography. The fact that you can't say anything about that but "stop whining, no one's talking about it," says it all.
As for Soriano, good to see some things never change. I'm sure Torre is enjoying facing that loser.

Hopped in the car on the way out of the LI office yesterday and flipped on 1050-AM for the Phillies / Cubs broadcast, and there is stupid Michael Kay. I thought I was done with him for the year. He was as annoying as the LIE traffic.
He's just not a good broadcaster. And his voice is grating.

Hamels was flat-out dominant yesterday (worked from home, so watched the entire game).
The atmosphere in Wrigley seemed creepy. Even when the Cubs were up 2-0, it seemed like everyone was stressed and waiting for the bad stuff to happen (granted, Dempster walking a platoon didn't help).
Where the fuck was Vlad going last night? Not that it mattered. It just seems like the Sox have the Angels' number the same way the Angels have the Yankees' number.
Go Rays.

I can't seem to find the Yankee playoff game on my tv schedule, when do they play?

I don't get your issue with Michael Kay, Tom.
I can see complaints of Waldman, Sterling.
I mean, OK, I get that Kay is Frank, Phil, or even Mel Allen. But I like the guy...his pretty knowledgeable and he facilitates just outstanding exchanges with Paul O'Neill and Al Leiter.
It could be worse...you could be listening to Hawk Harrelson or Rory Markus/Terry Smith.

I tell you, the Dodgers seem like they might have that vibe going that they can ride. Adding Manny and Blake and getting Furcal back changed the team dimension. Gotta wonder what their record would have been had they had all three all year. Manny and Blake to help the middle, Furcal at the top, plus add a guy like Torre to guide the kids, and you might have a sleeper.
I'm tired of the Cubs though. This whole loser aspect is grinding my nerves.

People keep saying it over and over, and it's true....The Cubs are The Cubs we've seen all year. The Dodgers are a drastically different team than what we've seen for most of the year.

Post by grover on Oct 2, 2008 12:31:56 GMT -5
Yes, very much so. It's not just getting Manny either. As I mentioned before, getting Blake helped a great deal and getting Furcal, who was hurt most of the year, back, helped that team big time.
Plus they have guys like Lowe, Penny and Maddux who've been in these games before and can get it done.
Balls, I have a feeling you will be yelling about them come the World Series.
|
|
|
Post by Chris on Oct 2, 2008 12:45:58 GMT -5
What can he yell though?
What have the Dodgers done other than win the requisite number of games to get to where they are?
It's not like they cheated...it's not like games were fixed.
Balls complaining about geography is NO different than people complaining about the Yankees and their payroll. What have the Yankees done wrong in racking up a 200 million dollar payroll and winning a bunch of championships....they didn't break any rules, they operated within the rules, and won the requisite number of games as dictated by their competitions. Same EXACT thing with the Dodgers. Balls has no legit beef here with the Dodgers...if he has a beef with MLB and their divisional structuring, then fine...but that's another story.

I won't acknowledge it anyhow. I like geographical divisions, and I accept it's faults. It's a decent point, but I don't care, I like the set up American sports give us.
I'd like to see the Dodgers win. If the Phils pull it off, I think an NLCS between the two would be a fantastic series. Both have a mix of hungry young talent and experienced vets which would give us some awesome ball. I say this after hearing non-stop about the Cubs 100 fucking years of gloom and doom all, fucking, day. I mean, enough. Cubs highlights are filled with more footage of fans going batshit than actual plays of the game, and I'm tired of it already.

Chris--that's not true. Payroll is something within a team's control, and many teams have the money but pocket it. Geography is a random place that you play. The idea that a team with 5 more wins in the same league can sit out is ridiculous.
It takes the merit away from the system--especially if that team that doesn't belong actually wins.
I will agree that the Dodgers themselves aren't doing anything wrong. They play in LA, and were rewarded a playoff berth because of some sort of random type of affirmative action. This is an MLB issue, and one I've complained about for years. It's a flaw in the game that has been around since 1969. Doesn't make it any less of a flaw though.
Gotta love when every team you want to lose, wins. I really don't care much about the Phillies series, but I want to see the Red Sox and Dodgers sent home.
I also want the White Sox to lose.
So I guess that means the Red Sox will play the White Sox in the LCS, and the Dodgers will face the Red Sox in the WS, probably leading to another Red Sox championship, since at that point, I would let my hate for Boston overtake my hate for the geography malarky.

"is a random place that you play"
It is? So, the Dodgers drew Los Angeles out of a hat?
"they play in LA, and were rewarded a playoff berth because of some sort of random type of affirmative action"
Absolutely untrue, Balls. They had to play the games and win them. They were awarded nothing...they earned their spot. OK, the division they play in makes it easier to earn that spot, but still, they were one team out of a division of several, just like the Yankees were, with a shot at advancing to the playoffs, and they did what they needed to earn it.
Next thing you will be discrediting the Angel's best record in baseball, because their division has 4 teams instead of 5.

No Chris--they didn't have to win the games. They just had to be slightly over .500, and they were given a spot ahead of a team that had a better record than they did. The Dodgers only got in because of where they play, not how well.
The Angels had the best record in baseball because they earned it. While the unbalanced schedule is unfair to the wildcard teams, that had nothing to do with the Angels.

Yes, stop. We get it. Try not to lay bait out for fights while commenting in this thread. The Dodgers might have a big run in them and I don't need you filling the thread with 'They don't belong' posts every few minute when I'd like to talk match ups, plays, hits, ect.
I respect your view on the flaw, but let's keep the thread about the games, and not flaws.

Hey, whoever is watching on the tube, let me know if "Nasty Boy" Brian Knobbs - or better yet, his buddy Hulk Hogan - are on hand. They are regular rooters, usually enconsed behind home plate. Knobbs especially is quite bellicose.

Tom, feel free to not respond to the point, since clearly it takes two to have a conversation.
I'm fine keeping this on the games at hand. And obviously, I hope the Dodgers don't have a good run in it, since I would have to see baseball have it's second illegitimate champion in 3 years.

Well, out goes Pena. It may be from a ball that hopped around his throat from the arm of Longoria during BP. Gary Thorne was laughing about it before, and now it may be something sorta serious. Chisox take 3-1 lead as I type.

He is warlike. He leads chants and has an air of intimidation to the road team.
As to Sabathia getting spanked right now, I am glad its happening. I dont like "one man teams." Its ridiculous that this is his 4th time around on only 3 days rest. The guy is EXHAUSTED. Its obvious. This is what happens when you put all the eggs in the one basket.

I am glad because Craig Counsell is on the Brewers and I don't think that such a nerdy spaz should be allowed in this game.
And get a REAL batting stance, would ya Counsell?
