HRs aren't important, if you can only hit .250 or in Giambi's case, barely .220. If you're a 1 dimensional player, who can't do anything else, then of course HRs are just that one dimension. Tex is far more than a 1 dimensional player.
.292 is not a shit average like Giambi. But again, I've been factoring defense. Let's not forget that Tex couldn't pinch hit because he was always PLAYING. The only category where Mauer did really better than Tex was singles. Tex led the league in total bases, RBI and HR. Mauer had 59 extra base hits. Tex had 85 extra base hits.
How valuable could Mauer's pinch hitting have been if the Twins didn't win any of the games?
Again, Mauer didn't catch in about 53 games. Tex played 1B in 152 games.

So, for a catcher to get the MVP they should have to catch 150 games?

If there is someone else who has an MVP season in the league, then he should catch more than 109 games and shouldn't miss 15 percent of the season.
I'm not saying Mauer didn't have an MVP level season. But so did Tex, and given that Tex had a better year at both ends of the field, and given how well the team did, no one except a true Yankee hater can't say that had it gone the other way, it would have been a robbery, or a rip off.

This is more black and white Balls logic.
You think because I favor Mauer for the MVP, I'm saying that any Yankee should be disqualified from the award.
Not at all. I think Tex had a WONDERFUL season (although...my own personal spin on his stats is that he owes much of it to A-Rod's presence, where Mauer did what he did all on his own with no help in the lineup). I think Tex had an MVP-worthy season....just not AS worthy as Mauer's.

It's not black and white. But I have the same attitude as you, but reversed. I think Mauer had an MVP type season, but not AS MVP worthy as Tex.
Mauer had Morneau for much of the season. He wasn't alone. But ultimately, the Twins owe more to geography for the playoffs than they do to any single player. In the AL West or East, they are not a playoff team.

Do you not understand it? Are you actually going to argue that geography had nothing to do with the Twins being in the playoffs? Or is 86 wins suddenly more than 87 wins?

Balls thinks that Billy Crystal should get MVP for that spring training game.

Unless they scrap the divisions and go back to one big league, like in the old days, the Twins did what they had to do to make the postseason.

True, but divisions are extremely stupid, and they SHOULD do one league, so WHERE you play doesn't mean more than how many wins you get.
And even if they don't do something that obvious, then at least go back to the balanced schedule, where teams who compete for the same spot at least have almost an equal number of games against the same level of competition. Maybe with a few more games against Anaheim, NY or Boston, and not the Royals, the Twins don't make the playoffs.

LOL at this topic.
The only thing I agree with him about on this topic is the fact of needing a balanced schedule when you have a wild card. It is not fair for AL East teams to compete vs AL Central teams for a wild card when they have to play NY, Boston, Tampa 18-19 times, when AL Central and AL West teams aren't.

The unbalanced schedule is just one of the stupid things Selig did.

The stupidest thing about it is that he did it, supposedly, to enhance the inter-division rivalries.
Seems to me that Yankees-Red Sox was a LOT more meaningful and reason to get geeked up about when they only 7 or 8 times per year.

Pujols only won the MVP because of geography.

Pujols, unlike Mauer, was WELL above the rest of the league, and played for a team that was one of the top 4 teams in the NL. Of course, that's a little debateable too given the unbalanced schedule, but at least the record shows that.

Had the Sox kept that player, they don't win a championship in 2007.

No he didn't. He played for the 5th best team in the league. The Rangers had 87 wins in 162 games. The Twins had 86. The Rangers also had a tougher schedule.
